Is not really that hard to believe. I personally don't take my kids out during term time but it's easy to see why ppl do and let's be honest as they grow up what are they going to look back on fondly, a couple of days of school or time spent with their family. Probably does them more good than harm.

Why?
My kids have been taken out of school every year since they started.. We live in wales and its perfectly legal for the school to autorise 10 days holiday, we have children with autism and special needs term time holidays allow for a quiter and more controlled experince, but regardless
My Eldest is now predicted to acheive All B's & A's and just got an A in Maths GCSE, My 2nd youngest just got the highest position in the school for his maths and top five for English.
Show me evidence that taking kids on holidays during term time affects them academically? The holidays we spend together are fun AND educational..
Last year we did Montreuil-aux-Lions, we did Disneyland, and learnt all about the Battle of Somme, The geography of the area, did some history of Paris and took in the culture..
This year we are going to blackpool (Im from up north originally) we will visit the pleasure beach, and we will visit the science and industry museums of Manchester & Liverpool too.
I think its very arrogant to assume people holiday sitting around a pool all day and couldnt care less for their kids education I think you will find those are minority of people who think like that (maybe it something you see in yourself?), but even if they do so what, what business is it of yours?

Well if you lived a area of abject poverty enclosed by council houses and no open countryside nearby and a £90 deal come up, you would too be booking, don't judge others based on your situation base it on theirs and offer advice from experience if you can.

It's not necessarily families taking their children out of school. Both my children are just under school age and we have been packing in as many UK and abroad holidays as we can until September arrives.

That's right everyone, blindly obey!!
I tell the school when I'm taking my kids out, I don't lie.
A week away with the family is much more important for a child's development than a week in school and not one of the last 3 teachers I've had the discussion with had disagreed on the points I raise.
(obviously during exam years this isn't the case but I'm talking 5 years old)

You must be the lucky one in the minority, As most schools do not allow any holidays during term time and usually there is a fine of £100-200 to be paid if a holiday is taken during school times.

I am perfectly happy with going on holiday if the school allows it . I was assuming most schools do not authorise term time breaks . As I am not against going on holidays, rather it was the principal aspect of breaking the school policy that is if they have one in place, Which in your case does not apply as your school gives permission for this.Hope i have made this clear.

I totally agree with the points you have made and I did this when my children were at school so they could go to USA with us when their dad was working out there for a short time. They had a fantastic time, visited the most amazing museums in Chicago and enjoyed seeing lots of the country. My sons teacher asked him to take lots of photos and on his return to school was able to use these for one of the weekly 'show and tell' sessions that she ran. The many who are doing well at school are being penalised for the feral parents who don't ensure their kids attend regularly and/or don't encourage their kids to learn. The sort that drop their kids off at school still in their onesies and slippers (seen in Leeds) The sort who told a teacher friend of mine 'well I can't read and it's never harmed me'. There is an obligation for children to receive an education whether at home or school but too many abdicate this responsibility to the school yet complain if they don't like it. Decisions around letting children take time out should be made by the headteacher and on a case by case basis, as is done in most private schools. Rant over!

OK, but my response was in regards to this quote
"All the cheaper prices are during school term times,Can't believe parents take their kids off school to go to these."
Which has zero context, and therefore was indicative of your disdain for parents taking kids out of school during term time.
Not a rant but a correct informed opinion I agree it should be at the headteachers discretion.. any child with less than 95% attendance without good reason prob shouldn't be taking more time off..
Maybe it should be used as a positive reinforcement and reward for good attendance, behaviour & grades?

We have 6 kids and always just Haven or Hoseasons, both really good for cheap accommodation as we only use the holiday park for sleeping and tend to visit places during the day. Also Scottish school dates differ from England and Wales so we take advantage of getting the cheaper price.

As a teacher myself I'd take my children out of school in term time (though PLEASE check for exams as I have a Year 11 pupil going away for a week and returning the day before her first exam!!) However teachers obviously don't get the 'in term time' option so my own children do not get to go on holiday at all. :-(

So, is it normal in UK to take kids off school during the school term?
Asking because in Spain I never saw anyone doing that, ever, neither friends, family, other pupils. Neither during school, high school, university.. basically, school term was for learning, studying and playing with your mates, and summer holidays, Easter, Xmas, etc.. was to spend with your family.
Our daughter was going to start school this year and checking holiday prices during the August or mid-term holidays were just ridiculous, so I was wondering, how do other people do then?
My wife's family is abroad as well so the only time we could visit is during August (either that or take our daughter on holidays during the term maybe for a couple of weeks?), but prices at that time are like £3,000 just for the flight of 3 people, unbelievable!!!
And of course, my wife wants to see her family so she's not thinking about how hard is to get £3,000 after tax just to visit for a few weeks. Would it then be an option to forget August and just take the kids off school at any other time? Prices are around half that if peak is avoided...

If parents didn't take their kids out during term time and prioritised education and instiled it in their young then they wouldn't grow up thinking it was ok to take their own kids out of school.

I very rarely comment, but I am teacher at a secondary school and it hugely disrupts the learning of a class when a student is off school for a prolonged period of time. They might miss a whole topic, they may miss half and the majority of these parents do not chase up work for their kids. The students then disrupt the class as they do not understand the topic they are studying when they return.
I'm not saying I wouldn't be tempted, but there are definitely different ends of the parenting spectrum for taking kids out of school for a holiday. The ones who remove and think 'teachers strike so what's the difference' and those who enquire with the head, collect the work to stay up to date and choose wisely the time of year that they would do it.

Voted hot, I have children and will not take them out of school however each to their own. My reason is simple they need to respect the rules of school and when they are taken out we as parents are saying is 2 fingers to school and in turn our children will hold on my parents are sticking 2 fingers up its OK for me to do the same but that's just my opinion and I'm sure most will disagree.
