As well as that it's worth checking how efficient the printer is. Many Ink Jet printers waste a lot of ink doing cleaning cycles. This is particularly exacerbated if like me you don't print regularly, as the ratio of cleaning cycles/printed pages will be higher.
However, I think the point with these deals is to use up the free Instant Ink period then ditch the printer.
For example I still bought two HP8715's on the recent deal which included £74 instant ink credit plus 3 months trial. The printer may have expensive ink and over zealous cleaning cycle, but I don't plan to use it past the free Instant ink period unless there happens to be some very cheap ink floating about. With the FREE INK code, referral, free 3 months and £74 credit I'll get 2-3 years of printing. I'd easily spend that much on carts for another printer, so great deal for me.

You don't have to use an HP Instant Ink Cartridge. If you purchased a separate cartridge it doesn't count towards your print total.

So is this printer worth it? Read some reviews on Amazon complaining that it doesn't do double sided printing - only duplex, and that's a pain in the behind when you're printing off e-books/guides.

looks like Amazon have now price matched, so you can get it delivered FREE if you can wait a few days :-)

Amazon may well have price matched but they're also showing as 'Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months', which is a tad more that 'a few days'! :smirk:

I don't actually like the flap at the end which catches the paper. It feels flimsy

I've just signed up to Instant Ink too, and I think it's a great idea. I've always skimped on printing due to the cost, then the cartridges dry up, etc etc. If anyone wants an extra free month code just PM me.

Do you really want a printer which HP can disable in the middle of a print job? Or deliver a firmware update to stop you using non-HP ink cartriges?
HP instant ink is a scam.
"Hp instant ink is a scam, nothing more nothing less, I’m on the 50 page plan, it’s been a year so technically I paid for cartridge, however since I’ve reached my page limit, cartridge has been disabled by hp, so unless I upgrade my page plan or pay for extra copies my printer is out of order. I feel I paid for a complete cartridge so not fare to have to pay extra, I’m lodging a complaint with BBB, and explain my side!"

HP instant ink is excellent and very cheap. I've just purchased a printer from Currys (£40). It came with 4 months free instant ink (upto 300 pages a month) and then £1.99 a month for 50 pages a month. These can be full A4 colour photo prints if you want. Pages you don't use roll over to the next month. Works out £24 a year for ink. Much cheaper than having to purchase own cartridges.

I think you've misunderstood. You can't use the Instant Ink cartridges without a subscription. In fact I believe the terms say you're supposed to send them back when you stop your subscription, but I don't believe they apply that condition. I guess they will if a hack surfaces to allow use of the cartridges.
It has 3 months free plus a £74 voucher which you apply to your instant ink account. As I print sporadically, I plan to switch between the plans as needed, so the £74 voucher (plus the 5 months free) will last me 2 - 3 years.
If at the end of that there happen to be cheap cartridges available i'll grab some, otherwise i'll ditch the printer.

This is what I'm thinking of doing... but don't they only send you the ink when the cartriges are used to a certain point? So its not like you can just stockpile ink?

From £1.99 per month for 30 full pages for HP Instant Ink use, pretty sure thats much cheaper than Canon ink will work out! I use it as a 2nd printer, only using when I want to print full colour pages of A4, not just a simple letter.

From previous threads, yes. You can call them and tell them you entered it and it hadn't applied. OR you forget to apply it. Same goes for referral codes if you hadn't entered one.
I had issues with a missing credit voucher in the printer I bought and spoke to them to resolve this. They are very helpful.

The printer I bought had a different deal:
