And how hard is it to instal with a combi boiler?

No, not as good as Nest if you want smart home integration.

Is the offer only for the full system? Moved house a couple of months back, Hive receiver and thermostat already installed, but need the hub to use with app. Best offer I can see at the moment is £64 just for the hub :disappointed:

My system is duel zone, I understand that hive 1 can only control 1 zone and hot water. Can I use this to control 1 zone and hot water, then leave the 2nd zone on the normal thermostat? Could I install it in series with the current controller/ timer?
Thanks.
refix to chrisst170
27 May 17 #15
You could install it in series and yes you could still connect hot, heating and leave the second zone seperate. I would only attempt this if you know what you are doing.

There are two types, heating only for combi boilers and heating and hot water for gravity fed tank based systems.

Lots of useful info in this previous deal ...

Can I control my heating over the internet (phone app or web browser) without a subscription? The Hive website implies you need to subscribe to 'hive active heating' to do this, which costs £5.95/month.

It's been installed for over 6 months and I've not had any complaints from him. We've got the Hive 2 and the only difference is the shiny thermostat box. I didn't think twice when Screwfix did if for £55 as it was an absolute steal.
welshblob

I installed two before Christmas following the screwfix deal and both have been rock solid. I find the thermostat gets in the way a bit as I never use it to turn things on so it's just a temp sensor really.

I have a combi boiler. Do I need "Hive 1 Smart Heating Control & Thermostat Heating Only"

As I understand it, the dual function version provides switched Lives for the HW and CH valves, whereas the single channel version provides a volt free contact that you connect to your combi. If your combi will work with a switched live demand then the dual should be OK, else you'll need the single. This is only what I've read on another forum, so I can't be 100% certain of the answer.

This was released in 2013. Hive 2 was released in 2015... is it me, or does anyone else think "hive 3" is imminent; and like the mobile phones, they don't support devices 2 generations old! That's why they're flogging them off "cheap"er before it happens??
bruno116

Just ordered mine...woohoo for £60
I have a convection boiler with seperate programmer / timer for HW and CH
Ordered "Hive 1 Smart Heating Control & Thermostat Heating & Hot Water"
I also have and old Legrand 2 wire (live switched) mechanical thermostat which i can get rid of.
Supposed to be a doddle to fit but if in doubt im told the instructions are really good and if you need to ask any questions go to http://www.diynot.com and post and they will help you out.
Lots of people have done self installs.

Heat added (controlled from my phone :stuck_out_tongue: )

Installed mine today. Absolutely fantastic - the thermostat panel is a little dull compared to the new version, but who cares? Functionality is exactly the same and the app works brilliantly. For £60 (£55 in my case due to a promo code), it's an absolute steal for a decent wireless thermostat – for a smart connected one, it's practically a giveaway. Thanks OP!
MrFizzy
4 Jun 17 #51
One thing I couldn't see in the instructions was the ability to boost the CH for an hour etc. HW looks like it has it, but oddly not CH, which would be a shame. Can you confirm whether this is available for CH? Thanks.
welshblob
4 Jun 17 1 #52
Yes Ch has boost, it's the button with concentric circles that looks a bit like a target on the app or website and you get to choose how long the boost is. You can also press the button on the receiver for an hour's boost as well. I'm not.sure whether there is a boost button or function on the thermostat as I never use that. Oh and there is a boost widget for android as well.

Same Thoughts!
It's been a few days, no disconnects (like the many on the amazon reviews). I reckon it's a problem if you lived in a victorianesque house. In modern stud wall houses I don't think there's a problem at all. I paid £60, so damn you for making me feel less happy cheeky

Our combi has a pre heat facility with a small water tank built in so it would fall into the later hive + hot water to make use of the pre heat.

I have the hive V1, excellent product and got mine from screwfix for £50. No different from the 2 in functionality and fitted it myself. Easy peasy.
refix
5 Jun 17 1 #56
It would be the combi version as the preheat would be a function built-in the boiler itself http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p10804?table=no

I need to look further into this, in theory the hot water function should be able to turn on and off the eco mode, ie the hot water pre heat function. The existing control panel I put in a few years back can do this via a program. I guess I need to start going over the wiring diagrams.

Interesting, there is a skill for it.
spongebob1913
6 Jun 17 #65
only bad thing is for hot water/heating, you cant specify a "boost" time, it will just boost it for an hour via alexa, whereas on the app you can specify a boost time.
Bisto13
6 Jun 17 #66
If that's the only bad thing, I'm OK with it. Does it work OK with increasing/decreasing the heating to a certain temperature?
spongebob1913
6 Jun 17 #67
yep - just remember the skill is "ask hive to set heating to XXXX" , always too easy to say "alexa, set heating to "X" , but then it wont do it.
HotUKDealSeeker
6 Jun 17 #68
The boost function is fixed. Both for 1hour. The CH is defaulted to 22c. There's no way of changing the default, but you can adjust it manually after pressing boost.

Looking to get one of these for a horrible powermax 155x boiler which is a combi with a thermal store for the hot water. Has a built in programmer for CH & HW.

Does anyone know if I'd need the 2 channel version or just the single channel? Thanks

Did you all install this yourselves? Anyone got an engineer working on this? How much did you pay for the installation?
HotUKDealSeeker
8 Jun 17 #73
yes, I was weary at first, but after watching a load of you tube videos (you can you tube anything these days).. It looked a piece of peace.

The only warning I have is looping out the old thermostat. If you need to do it. Use a tester to check which wire is live and which is switch live etc.. The original installer used the "earth" cable as live on my installation. Luckily I checked first before automatically using the colour of the wires. Then again, that's a warning for all electrical wiring!
Interloper
11 Jun 17 #74
I just needed to swap it for an existing Siemens/Boss Therm wireless thermostat so it wasn't too big a job (although I had to download the original manual to figure out which wire was which - the terminal markings didn't correspond to the Hive at all). I wouldn't recommend doing this if you aren't comfortable with wiring electrics - you can damage your boiler at the very least.

I've got my Hive all set up and working apart from not being able to add a new action. Do you need to take out the Hive subscription for this to work? Thanks anybody that can help.
HotUKDealSeeker
14 Jun 17 #77
I'm assuming that will only work once you have a few different smart devices. Like a smart sensor and plug. Then you add an action, "if sensor goes off, turn on kettle (plug)"
MrFizzy
14 Jun 17 #78
Hi, thanks. Yes, that would make sense but I was hoping I could use it in conjunction with the geolocation sensing e.g. if I got more than a few hundred meters from home, then turn off the heating. I think the Nest can do that. So long as others also can't add an action when all they have is just the Heating controller the I guess my set up isn't faulty. Thanks for you reply.
HotUKDealSeeker
14 Jun 17 #79
Lol! Not faulty. I had the same thought when I was playing with my one too.

For the geolocation thing sign up to http://www.ifttt.com it's got "works with hive". They have "recipes" in there for just that purpose, and it's blogged by hivehome as well (so you can trust them)
HotUKDealSeeker
14 Jun 17 #80
Oh, forgot to mention. That trust bit is because you have to give them your hive ID and password (so they can access your hive account)
MrFizzy
14 Jun 17 #81
I shall give that a go. Shame Hive don' build it in already though. Thanks for your help.
HotUKDealSeeker
14 Jun 17 #82
Hive is run by British gas (centrica). And profits come first for the shareholders! If they can work with another company (IFTTT.com) to get the same result for the users without spending another penny on R&D, what do you thinks going to happen?

Nest made by google is all about databases and IT, their one will obviously be better.

Anyway, you're welcome! And enjoy it!

BTW, if you have suggestions for hive, you can go to some website, hivehome uservoice or something like that. I thought it was another 3rd party website, looks like it's owned by British gas as well. You can vote for suggestions or add your own!

I have just installed it and it all works brilliantly.
Does anybody know if you were to get the V2 thermostat, would it work with this controller and hub ?
HotUKDealSeeker
16 Jun 17 1 #85
yes, you just can buy the stat on it's own and go through an update screen via the app/website.

Best price I've found is £80ish on eBay BNIB. However, that would make your purchase £140 (including the £60 you've just spent). Makes this deal a little dud if you go down this route.

I would suggest you use it for this summer and winter first. You'll find you never touch the stat and a "waste of money" to pay purely for aesthetic purposes (as it adds no additional functionality). Also, with the V2 Stat the screen is blank (to conserve battery power) unless you touch the screen, whereas on the V1 stat, the temp is always on the screen (a plus point). Someone on this forum said he's had the V1 for 5 years and changed the battery only once (although V1 was released in October 2013, I would take it as meaning "lasts a long time" (angel) )
Derek_Duval
16 Jun 17 #86
I had a play with the new stat in maplin, and the temperature readout not being displayed constantly would annoy me, along with the fingerprints on the shiny screen. I'm happy to stick with my v1
HotUKDealSeeker
16 Jun 17 1 #87
Fingerprints are definitely a no no!
I thought I'd get the V2 too, but after a week and realising I don't even touch the stat, there's definitively no reason whatsoever to get the V2.

Enjoy it!
