Got the Redmi Note 3 snapdragon running NitrogenOS (a cracking version of android.. I tried a few and this one runs smooth as silk with all the essential features!)

Something to note though, the MIUI OS allows you to "Never" go into sleep while charging, leaving the screen on. DON'T select this option because if you accidentally leave the screen on, while charging, the heat of both warps the plastic around the screen and you end up with a curve, like mine, which can no longer have a glass screen protector and cannot remove the sim card or memory card since its warped the port where they reside.

Still, runs great, don't notice it in daily use.. just cant leave TalkTalk anytime soon

Too big for me at 5.5". I also think from research that the Moto g5 camera is better. I'm hoping for some deals on that or the g5 plus once the g5s series drops.

Hot deal if it fits you though!

MIUI is basically iOS - take a look at the reviews for MIUI on YouTube, I don't think you'll mind it as much as you may think

I would think carefully before switching. Android for me will always be the better system, but my sister literally doesn't understand Android and the 1 time she switched from iPhone she moaned the entire time that she 'couldn't do anything' by which she means - it didn't have iTunes, she wasn't interested in Spotify or anything which in my opinion is 1000x times more stable and easier to navigate than iTunes.

Anyway.. I would consider your options carefully before jumping in or you could spend 2 years of regret like my sister. Obviously there is every chance you'll agree that Android is leaps and bounds ahead of IOS anyway.
TheMan_Aman to LBPMAN1

Go for the 6s if you can, it's a decent phone but since you're already on iOS I suggest staying on it

Is this going to be much of an improvement on a Galaxy S5? - I'm torn what to do, been tempted loads recently by these deals... also the Lenovo P2 in the 3 shop for £199 seems good value (not in comparison to this) but as an upgrade to the S5. Thanks in advance for the input.

Specs comparison between the 3 here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone2=8531&idPhone1=6033&idPhone3=8319. The S5 camera is the best of the lot I think. Also, look under 'Features' in the link, as there are lot more mentioned under the S5.

You may want to compare actual physical sizes here after calibrating the page with your S5: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Samsung-Galaxy-S5,Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-4,Lenovo-P2/phones/8202,10212,10404

In people's experience, what are the delivery lead times like?
Midjet76 to ImyR85
19 May 17 #23
I had two recently from different vendors on AliExpress, one there was a slight delay during the time NatWest had problems but the first was delivered in 12 days and the slower one was ordered on 28th April and arrived 15th May so still well chuffed.
I have unlocked the bootloader on the older one and have just managed to get it rooted. The new one will be given the same treatment tomorrow, it has to be bound to a Mi Account for 72 hours before I can unlock bootloader.
That can be a bit of a faff, but worth the wait IMHO

Mine only took 10 days to arrive from Xiaomi online store via Aliexpress.
Unfortunately and bizarrely they sent me a Zuk Z2 (which is a little more expensive) instead of the Redmi.
I'd been considering the Z2 before ordering the Redmi so you can imagine my confusion when I opened the parcel.
After a few days of back and forth messages they've acknowledged their mistake and said I can return it and they'll cover the cost or take a partial refund (amount to be confirmed).

I've bought two of these phones, great vale, nearly £15 less than I paid last year; delivery times were 4 weeks for the first and 10 days for the seconds - the delays were all due to them not dispatching the first one until nearly 3 weeks after I ordered it.

I have not had ANY issues with mine, not even that overheating/screen warping someone mentioned - I do wonder if he bought a fake - as there are plenty around.

Why 2?? They arent strong enough to survive being crushed by a refuse lorry - after accidentally being thrown out with the rubbish.
The latest MIUI update for the phone also sorts out the issues with its Music app not detecting music/video stored on the SD card.

My only grump is all the Google crud now installed and non-removeable, this didnt happen with the older Note models

Gentle_Giant to alasdairgray
20 May 17 #105
The camera is a LOT better than on previous models, but still not top rank - but what do you expect for the money. Night photography/flash is a lot better especially.

Having said that, I suspect a lot depends on the MIUI firmware; when MIUI 7 came out, it buggered up the camera on my Note3G, focus never worked properly; come MIUI 8 (yes, they updated a 4 year old phone to the latest OS), the focus issue was fixed.

Also a good point; My current phone actually has two annoying deficiencies, One being the unrelaible Fingerprint Sensor and the other being the GPS,

A bad GPS causes havoc when using the phone as a Satnav (because let's face is Waze and even Plain Google Maps are waaay ahead of TomTom etc.) - when the phone thinks your position is 10-20 metres to the left/right of where you actually are, it think you're then on a different road, keeps telling you to turn/make a u-turn.recalculates your route perpetually due to being in the wrong place, it drives you mad.

So although they may only seem like little things, they're quite important
Jabaltariq
19 May 17 #79
I've recently bought one of these and can tell you that it's not a bad phone but there are several problems with the one I've got.
1. I ordered dark grey and according to the box, I got a dark grey but in reality the phone is actually in silver.
2. When on a call, the other party person has trouble hearing me unless the phone is connected to a car kit.
3. I complained to the seller and they directed me to a xiaomi website page for updates which I did and since, have had a further two OTA updates. This has not fixed the problem of the voice during calls but has left the battery life worse than before. Its gone from an impressive two days plus to less than one day.

Ré DHL, you will get stung for tax EVERY time; I get low value packages from China via DHL every 4-6 weeks; even though the declared value is below the tax threshold, DHL ALWAYS* send a tax demand of ~£3.50; Ditto FEDEX, the one and only time I queried it, they followed it up with a demand for £84.

*Started just before Christmas 2015; they want payment before delivery, and if you dont pay, they delay delivery by a couple of days, while sending further demands; however they have NO paperwork to justify the charges, nor do you get a receipt if you pay - so it is a scam.

Were the reviews for the regular Redmi Note 4 or the Global version/4X? Many reviews state the global version/4x is a big improvement over the Chinese version Note 4.

Having the phone myself I would say the camera is pretty decent and a good mid range performer. Definitely try it before you sell it.

soldierboy001 to woodface7

That is a silly question as no built in speakers have good quality and anybody who says different doesn't know about quality, and everybody uses headsets of some description, don't they. The best sound I has from a phone was about 10 years ago from a Nokia twin speaker phone but it was not and never will be HiFi.

Has android improved?
Will this phone be a vast improvement on Nokia 1020?
Does it take Micro SIM card like my 1020?
Can you get Apply music on this?
Any cases you would recommend?

Android has always been a good operating system on good hardware. Years ago many phones just never had the power to run it properly but nowadays even budget phones are powerful enough to offer decent performance.

Android on this Xiaomi phone is an excellent experience with no lag or stutter and you will actually be able to use some apps on it :-)

There are loads of cases mentioned on the various threads for this phone so just have a flick through. Buy accessories for the Redmi Note 4x as it's identical to the global version of the the Note 4.

My daughter has the 3S global which has 3Gb and an inferior processor. Hers has never had any problems even with Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc all running at the same time. Her previous Mi4C was always having problems keeping up even with 2Gb RAM (Snapdraon 808). This phone would be fine for anything you hit it with (metaphorically speaking).

It seems from my following of AliExpress and Banggood that all 4G phones seem to have only one sim card and one memory card at the same time, if you want two sim cards and a memory card you have to have 3G only. I have purchased several phones for friends and this has been the way it is, but 3G seems to satify them as they are mostly not prolific users of data on the move.

I think the £3.50 is the DHL price for small package delivery in the UK. I sometimes get a charge like that in Spain by Correos but a bit more if the package comes by courier but not if it comes by regular post, something to do with the way it's sorted when arriving in the country. If that is not the case I am sorry for trying to clear this up.

For everyone talking about the camera, remember photo quality is set to standard by default and you should change it to high quality (in the camera settings, click mode > gear icon)

Just looked it up on the internet and for countries when they send regular mail from their own countries mailing system to other countries have to pay terminal fees in their postal charges, so this explains why I don't get charged when it comes by regular mail but courier services are not included in this requirement and can and usually will charge termination delivery charges. Hope that clears it up.

This is way above the taxable limit, so if you use DHL, there'll be another 20% VAT + courier handling fees will almost apply (unless someone can prove otherwise).

Had mine about a week now and the battery life is unreal.

Having had a google pixel and a Motorola Moto z before they used to get 3-3.5 hours SOT max and that was just using it for reading news and scrolling through Facebook.

Took it off charge yesterday at 6am used it all day and was on 50% at midnight with 4.5 hours SOT, been playing a few games on it today an at 3pm its at 30% with 6.5 hours SOT.

I only got this because the screen died on the Moto z, but I'm glad I got this its running just as fast as my previous phones which was a huge surprise, had 2 updates already, yes the camera isn't at the pixels level and the software is not stock (Personally I prefer MIUI), but when you haven't charged it in 2 days and know you can use it all day without it dying is such a satisfying feeling

(Dropped it on to a solid floor getting it out of the box but seems fine). Set to India for updates but time, email, calendar etc all correct UK time taken from either the (Three) SIM or the relative apps. All the data from my own phone was trabsferred easily using Mi Mover. I'm pleased with it. I'm used to having good battery life as my old phone was a Huawei Ascend Mate 7

Remove the warranty (becomes £114.46), then use the £1.57 voucher offered by the seller = £112.89 in total

To remove warranty, you need to change the shipping country to US first, then add phone to basket, finally amend shipping address to UK just before checking out.

Very tempted with this. Binned iPhones a couple of years ago, but recently smashed up my Huawei P9 but they want £170 to replace the screen etc. Still got 12 months left on my EE contract and not in a rush to shell out that kind of money. This would seem like a cheaper alternative that will give me similar specs.
Is it simply a case of whacking my EE SIM in it when it arrives, choosing location, then away we go, or is it more complicated than that? Am I going to be consulting YouTube videos for ever more or are they pretty user friendly for ordinary folk?

I can sell my Oneplus for around £100+ so breaking even on this overall. I'm not keen on getting a Oneplus 3T or 5 as can't justify spending £400+ on a phone when this will do everything I need. Only downside will be the camera but as long as it's on par with the OPO then no real loss.

No, DHL will charge you import and VAT on whatever the declared value of the parcel is, the £3.50 they keep charging me is a rip-off, as there is no government imposed tax to pay, and DHL wont give me any paperwork to say what the charge is for.

Remember, it isnt JUST the value of the item, it is the cost of postage; and if the postage is "free" they will "calculate" the cost; that is how they justified the extra £84 they billed me when I queried the £3.50; they decided the parcel would cost several hundred pounds to send via their standard service.(Parcel value at the time was £14.40 - go figure.)

Import Duty is based on value of item plus cost of postage.
VAT is based on value of item, plus cost of postage, PLUS the Import duty, so you are paying tax on a tax.

If the item is on an EU discriminatory tariff (ie, trying to protect the French), there may well be a huge percentage EU import tax to be added to each step of the above; meaning you pay a tax on a tax on a tax.

I looked at bringing an electric motorscooter back with me in 2011, the bike's showroom price in Nanning was £120, and I could get it shipped to the UK for another £100.

So £120 + £100 = £220.

+ EU Penalty duty @40% =£308

+ EU VAT @15% =£354.20

+ UK Import Duty @20% = £425.04

+ UK VAT @20% = £510.05

THIS is why electric bike and electric scooter prices are so high, when the component price would suggest they should'nt cost more than £50 more than a standard bicycle.
soldierboy001
21 May 17 #194
I think you are spreading BS as I have just put your example into the import duty calculator and the duty and vat come to £ 53 for you scooter.

I've bought a lot items from Aliexpress with no issues however all have been relatively low value (say under £45) I really like this phone but unsure on how this will play out with items over £100 with the standard shipping option.
So realistically what are the chances of being collared for VAT 20% Import duty around 5% and that horrible Royal mail fixed handling charge of say £17.
Some sellers will de-value the item but not all. So what are your experiences of higher value items with Aliexpress?

Also it is not an EU Penalty it is a WTO Anti Dumping Charge.[/quote]
I suggest you read a little further into that anti dumping claim; they sent thousands of questionnaire forms (in English), to every electric bike makers they could find in China, and when the majority of them (who dont speak/read English, or sell their products overseas), failed to reply; they used that as evidence of dumping.

On top of that, dumping means selling outside their own country and at a loss; the price they charge for these bikes to overseas customers, via international sales sites like Ali Baba is HIGHER than the price they sell them in their own country - so how can it be dumping??

eg. The bikes I saw for £120 in Nanning cost £199 + shipping* via the cheapest dealer I could find on AB; yet the cheapest and nastiest "EU" (Turkish built), electric bikes I have seen in the UK are advertised for £399.

*Shipping a few hundred of these bikes is almost nothing, at the time I was quoted £100 for a shipping container from Shanghai to Liverpool or Southampton. (via a Cannuk I know** in Guangzhou).

Not really, but this will be much better in the battery department, & being new, will feel more snappy in everyday use (if you'd like a small, but noticeable speed increase with your SN3, I'd recommend backing-up your data, texts, pics, etc, then doing a hard/factory-reset).

Your SN3 is better in these main aspects:
- Camera: photos & videos
- NFC support
- ANT+ support
- Removeable/replaceable battery

Areas where the XRN4 excels in comparison:
- Much better battery life
- Newer, more efficient, snappier OS
- Dual-SIM
- Larger microSD capacity
- FM Radio

Same here took around 10 days, superb phone, really nice.

I also went for the case + screen bundle, it is total garbage, the case doesn't even fit properly, is flimsy and offers no protetcion. The screen cover doesnt even cover the hwole screen and looks horrible. I think it was extra £6 for these two. Not worth it. Have ordered a case & full screen protector from banggood.
Idris
25 May 17 #250
I've ordered a full screen protector from banggood. It doesn't cover the edges, as its 2.5d curved edge screen, but it protects all the main area and covers it all aswell.

This listing doesn't have case or screen protector options so did you order from a previous 'Xiaomi Online Store' or 'Dreami' listing by any chance? Was wondering if anyone who ordered from Dreami has received theirs yet.

Did your case have the correct holes? Was thinking if it didn't fit properly it might have been for the original Note 4. Does it have a hole in the centre of the top edge?

I wouldn't bother paying for the 4GB version unless you are really some sort of power user...

Never frozen on me and as quick as my Nexus 6 was to use.

I'm sure those links will help others out. The reason for my comment though was just to see which store they purchased it from because I posted the previous RN4 deal from Dreami. The person who I was asking, mentioned 10 days which would be before this deal was posted hence why I'm curious, since it currently seems like nobody has received theirs from Dreami yet. I asked about the case just to see if the seller had supplied an original Note 4 case by mistake and weren't aware Global Version RN4 has same housing as RN4X.

My phone was bought from Eternal Team and on the listing there was an option to buy a bundle which included a TPU case. The case is the correct one for the phone I received with all the cutouts in the right places but it's of very poor quality and fit and at a cost of about a fiver it's very poor quality. Much better available on Amazon or eBay.
dreadzone101
25 May 17 #258

I bought mine from Xioamo Online Store on AliExpress. It was not this deal, it had few bundle options from cases, screen covers to MiBand.

The case that came with it is a very cheap 7 basic thin clear silicon case. All the cut outs are there in the right places, but the quality of the case is simply dreadful. While the cuts out are there they are poorly cut and not accurate, same with buttons.

The case does not fit in that it is not secure, it doesn't fit tightly, its loose around places and ende doesnt even cover or go over the edge.

So I would recommend not buying it with this bundle, it's rubbish and expensive. I have ordered a Bakeey gel silicone case and screen cover from banggood instead.

You can pretty much use any old UK USB socket plug with the supplied cable. Or get a micro USB charger. Or an EU to UK adaptor. They're widely available. The supplied plug rating is 5V 2A. If you get a plug that's rated less, it will still work but it will charge the phone slower. Something like this<< would do.

Is Lineage classed as a custom ROM mate? With Googles new Netsafe shenanigans I fear that freedom of choice is being froze out for custom ROM users, apps like Netflix, Super Mario Run ect basically hidden from end users with rooted/unlocked bootloader/ custom ROM's and attemping to side load these apps from APK mirror sites don't work as there's self checks within some of these apps (Super Mario Run being one), scary times, disappointed in Google with this complete s#¥*e from them under the guise of DRM security.

Cheers buddy, Didn't know Nougat was available in any official guise as yet, did you need to unlock the bootloader first as detailed on the MIUI forum?
dcx_badass
2 Jun 17 #304
Yeah it's been out since the end of Jan in Dev so it's pretty stable now, also nope to the bootloader unlocking, just update to latest Stable, download the dev rom to the phone, open the update app select update from package and select the update, be aware that switching from stable to dev will wipe your device. Also worth taking this opportunity to encrypt your device (it's quicker to encrypt well the phone doesn't have much on).

I will be unlocking mine though and flashing Xiaomi.eu rom though just cos.

Also my global stable didn't have a UK setting, like most on here. Global Dev added it though.

Nice phone, however be aware it has a direct line back to the Chinese...

I have been monitoring network traffic on mine, and seen repeated connections to various xiaomi.com servers, including

api.ad.xiaomi.com
sdkconfig.ad.xiaomi.com
data.mistat.xiaomi.com
and various others.

Most seem to resolve to a set of AWS IPs. The "MSA" app appears to be a source of a bunch of requests, it is a system app so cannot be disabled. This is with as many Mi services disabled as possible, and no Miaccount set up.

You may want to consider flashing your phones with something uninfected...

As confusing as it sounds both Redmi Note 4 and Note 4X can be either Snapdragon or Mediatek. Original Chinese Note 4 = Mediatek. Note 4 Global Version (this deal) = Snapdragon. And then Xiaomi for some reason decided to make the Chinese Note 4X 32GB = Snapdragon, but the Note 4X 64GB = Mediatek even though both the 32GB and 64GB Global Version Note 4 are Snapdragon. The official China MI site product page for Redmi Note 4X<< shows that 64GB is Mediatek. It isn't a website error either as YouTube unboxing videos confirm this variation exists and even has the updated design rather than the original Note 4 Mediatek housing. B20 is another matter to which adds more variations. Without taking into account the different ram/storage models, I think there are still 7 or 8 different Note 4/4X variants
dreadzone101
7 Jun 17 #334
Further to my previous comment, it seems even the Chinese 64GB Redmi Note 4X itself can be either Snapdragon or Mediatek... There seems to be a new Snapdragon Note 4X 64GB that comes in a new light blue colour only, which is different to the Green Hatsune Miku colour.

That is incorrect. "Received by line-haul" means it has still yet to leave the origin country so that isn't as far as tracking goes. It would stop once it lands in destination country. Example of tracking logs from previous threads.

Random question but wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to connect this phone via an adapter to HDMI ?
Aliexpress sell an adapter that's supposed to work
linky
But googling does not give a definite answer - anyone have any experience with this ?
dcx_badass
18 Jun 17 #357
It's doable, I've done it, but you need a Displaylink compatible adapter which are normally pretty pricey as in £50-150. That might work if it supports displaylink but I doubt it does as it mentions MHL which this phone doesn't support. You could try it and let us know.

19 Jun 17 #358
Thanks for the info, for the price I may just take the chance and order the adapter from aliexpress and see what happens !

Hi- I was really interested in your recent posts about that the different CPUs to be found in the 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB RN4s so much so that I'm not sure which one to go for now. I'd prefer to have the Snapdragon 625 Octacore CPU and would have plumped for the 4GB/64GB version but I'm not sure what to go for now. According to the attached link - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Global-Version-Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-4-Mobile-Phone-4GB-RAM-64GB-ROM-Snapdragon-625-Octa-Core/32802373992.html?aff_platform=aaf&cpt=1497871438850&sk=Y7bAZbY&aff_trace_key=fe275eac380a4d05844c79cc66a4b3a1-1497871438850-00092-Y7bAZbY

there is a PRODUCTS MODEL heading which compares 4 RN4s, including the RN4 MTK Chip MTK Helio X20 DecaCore CPU, but that's not the global version featured in the above listing which clearly states in the main title and again in the SPECIFICATIONS table at the bottom of the listing that this has the Snapdragon 625 octacore CPU. Could this be one of the newer 4GB/64GB versions you referred to which definitely has the Snapdragon CPU? If so I might go for it.

The 32GB and 64GB Global Version Redmi Note 4 have no processor variations. Your link is a 64GB version of this deal and is Snapdragon with B20. There have been a few deals posted on hukd for it in the past. My comment is regarding the Redmi Note 4X, which is China counterpart to the Global Version RN4. It is considered that the China RN4X is essentially the Global Version RN4 without B20. My comment was just pointing out that the RN4X 32GB is Snapdragon but the RN4X 64GB can be both Snapdragon or Mediatek. If you search "Redmi Note 4X 64GB", you'll see both Mediatek and Snapdragon listings (none have B20). The Redmi Note 4X 64GB Snapdragon listings will be in light blue colour only, which is the new model I mentioned in my previous comment. However, if you search "Redmi Note 4 Global Version 64GB" they'll be 64GB of this deal like in your link (Snapdragon with B20). Lots of stores sell it and it's the one to go for if you want 64GB since there is no benefit in getting the RN4X instead.
Chuggee
19 Jun 17 #362
I'd never go for the Mediatek version simply due to the lack of ROM developers for it. A custom ROM is a must if you want to use a lot more features on your phone, so Qualcomm is the way to go for now.
hotukuser2015
19 Jun 17 #363
Thanks for your really useful explanation. So if I have understood you correctly its a thumbs up from you then to go for the 4GB/64GB with Band 20 as in my link ?
dreadzone101
19 Jun 17 #364
Yeah I'd say that'd be the best place to get it from. It's currently the cheapest store selling it at the moment and one of the most well known too. Quite a few deals from that store have been posted here in the past. Here's a previous thread<< for the 32GB version from that store. Judging from the comments, they seem to despatch fairly quickly.

Seems like the AliExpress stores are all out of stock for Black or Grey options. So it's currently cheaper from the same store as this deal thread. Xiaomi MC Store 64GB RN4<<

Aliexpress is very good but some of the sellers are rubbish, but you don.t find out until you use them. Then the long drawn out mailings between the seller and then Aliexpress to sort things out.

Phone arrived today (shipped on the 12th and took 15 days from day of ordering which is impressive!)

really impressed with it. Black version and standard original.

in package it included a European to UK plug adapeter, screen protector and phone case, plus the phone box (all sealed and unopened) and a SIM card adapter kit.

As I didn't pay more for the case and screen protector I didn't expect them but a nice little extra! I won't be using them however as the case is rubbish and the screen protector doesn't sit properly around the edges.

phone works perfectly on Plusnet 4G. Set region to France but wasn't sure what I should pick to be honest.

All all in all very pleased and a good replacement for my iPhone 4s after 6 years of ownership!

RIP iPhone 4s you put in a good shift

Mine arrived today. Works fine but Google Maps isn't working even though location works for other apps. Read up and this is an issue with these - anyone had similar problems?
dcx_badass
21 Jun 17 #370
Mine works perfectly but I'm on the Dev builds running Android 7, also has UK as a region. I used official Xiaomi Dev builds but am now on Xiaomi.eu builds, works great on both.

Which phone do you have as you posted the same thing in Redmi Note 4 & Redmi 4X threads, they are totally different phones.
dpdg99
22 Jun 17 #371
What do you mean by not working? It can't locate you on the map? I'm afraid mine works fine as far as I can tell
arfster
22 Jun 17 #372
It's a problem with the mediatek version, not the snapdragon ones (as these are).

Had mine for a while, never seen a problem with google maps.

What region did you set yours to, mine is France, would that make a diff do you think?

Seems like you can put it on air plane mode, open maps, turn air plane mode off and it works tho

Hi Willy77

Just come in at the back end of this and am interested as to how the Google Assistant trick works and is installed and at what point from new, and I wonder if you could help me out pl. I've just bought a 4GB 64Gb Redmi Note 4 and I'm hoping I can do the same as you on mine when it arrives.

Same here ordered on 7 June, Dispatched 13 June. Been up in air since and tracking is not found either. Can't believe other got theirs within 2 weeks and I'm here waiting over a month :/ That's the way the cookie crumbles I guess

5 Jul 17 #389
They could get stolen too, if you don't get yours within 60 days of ordering (the date you actually paid for the order) you can open a dispute. I'd give it 2 more weeks and then file a dispute.
cameronwba
9 Jul 17 #390
Well I ordered mine on 24th May. My argument with the retailer is that they should surely be able to track their end where in the world the package has been and where it is expected to go, like any company.
