Here is a lovely June trip, spending 2 nights in Verona and 4 nights in Lake Garda. I've also included opera tickets for Carmen in Verona which is likely to be amazing!
29 June - 1 July
You'll spend 2 nights in Verona at the Euromotel Croce Bianca. Although it's on the outskirts you'll have the car if you wanted to drive into the city. Alternatively, public transport is available too. On the evening of 29 June at 9pm you will go to the Opera in the outside arena to see Carmen.
Breakfast is in with the price which includes amazing homemade baked items including Italian black bread which if you haven't tasted I do recommend. There is some cheaper options but this is right on the beach overlooking Lake Garda and is good value for money.
With the car you can easily explore the area, although you could do this trip using public transport although it may take longer.
I was hooked, until I read car involved! I last drove in Italy 3 years ago, from Genoa Airport to Rapallo. I drove a 900cc Lancia that had a top speed of 50mph flat out. Every car that came up behind me seemed attached to me by a shoelace and delighted in letting me know that their horn worked.
Never again. Good post though for those of a stronger nerve than me.

It's really easy to use public transport too. From Verona to the centre. There is then a bus from Verona to Garda although without a car in Garda may limit you a little. Garda is lovely to drive and Verona is much less crazy than say Rome, it's actually quite 'sleepy' by comparison to some Italian cities.

The bus service up and down the east coast of Lake Garda is not too bad.
we used it a few years ago going from Riva Del Garda to various locations on the East side of the lake.
my personal opinion, great deal and perfect if going by car, but if using public transport I would probably swap the Lake Garda hotel to something in a bigger town on the lake like the town named "Garda" as plenty of hotels there at various prices and would not be as remote as Hotel Brenzone (if not driving)

Yes I've used the bus myself and stayed near Garda town, although did hire a car in Garda and it was easy to drive, although the bus journey was slower as it did make quite a few stops.

agree there rachel 100% stops everywhere :disappointed:
but unfortunately not too many options when you get to lake garda :disappointed:
next time I am there will stay on south side of the lake so can get trains to the main cities.

Just got back from Verona (did a few other cities in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia too). Lovely city and very good standard of restaurants. Lake Garda was beautiful and you could easily stay there for a week and still miss a lot.
Also recommend hiring a car as can imagine it would be tricky by public transport and you'd likely miss a good deal than having the flexibility of driving and making the odd pit stop to take pics or stop for a nice afternoon espresso etc.
