Why should you buy this if you already have a decent smartphone? Well you'd buy this if you want to or can make use of the optical zoom.

you never possessed a camcorder I think and therefore there is no way you know about quality of an ordinary proper camcorder, this particular one would definitely be 100 times better picture quality than the best smart phone. Definetely I would not buy one for the greater range of the optical zoom which usually does deteriorate the picture unless necessarily needed. I do not need to make anything credible to you because I owned camcorders since they exist and also owned the best smartphones money can buy.

Are all camcorders pretty much the same? I need one (because phone video not good enough) but there is such a massive range to choose from and I don't know how to choose. Need something pocket sized with decent ish optical zoom, is this Canon one a good choice for some technical reason or did OP just think it was a good price.

Most half decent cameras will now record movies up to 30 minutes in quality at least as good as a video camera, and the DSLRs are capable of studio quality. It probably explains why the prices are falling to attract buyers.

thinking about, you might possibly be right. I read somewhere that some of these most recent films were edited live at the cinema by holding a smartphone in the hand and not just that, it also by chance gave an hdr effect which then they decided to implement to all the 4k hdr films

The majority of spartphones do not have the pixel or definition or resolution of this camcorder. This camcordor has 1080p, which is the standard HD tv broadcast and BLU-RAY. Therefore this camcorder records in BLU-RAY quality camera. It may not be a professional production camera. But what are you expecting for £139.99?

it is the quality of the pixel that counts together with other factors like the quality and size of the lens and the CCd (cmos in this case). If the quality is rubbish, any resolution will be rubbish and even if this camera was an SD resolution it would be far better than your 4k smartphone even so I never tried this camera which sounds like an average non expensive one and therefore same as the many others that can give nearly broadcast quality. The difference between this one and the most expensive one is minor in terms of quality but obviously they charge for all the extras and better colour/sharpness which is not much proportionate to the extra price we pay for the top models. If I need to film something important I want to use something decent and not a rubbish smart phone. Obviously the smart phone can also be more appreciable for the pocketability to video these rare moments when the police does abuse us motorists in the streets (not all fortunately). Also, there are small cheap photo camera priced at less than £100 that can give far better photo rendition and video recording at a far better quality than the best smart phone.
I think that many of you are very confused about this, to see the huge difference you must use a large tv screen and not a small window in a pc monitor.

in my view camcorder or even action cam are better at video recording specially due to their longer battery life while smartphoned have rubbish battery life and you end up draining your phone battery on recording videos left without contact! want to record an important long occassion use proper video device

This is my personal experience, so;

For those who are interested in this deal. I bought one of these camcorders, and regretted it the moment I switched it on and saw the quality of the picture. It was poor, and to be honest I get a far better picture on my Sony Xperia Z5 Premium.

Also a word of warning to those thinking of purchasing this from Argos. They were selling this under their no returns policy, which you will only realise when checking the receipt. This means even of you do not believe it does not produce acceptable quality they will not accept it back.

You may also find it will not record at any quality on your SD card without an error, and saying the card is too slow. And for those who think it may be my SD card, the same ones work fine on my phone recording video in 4K.

I am currently in the process of speaking to trading standards as I do not believe the camcorder is fit for its purpose, which is why not many are sold, and it is selling at that price.

My advice, either get a better camcorder with the money which has onboard memory. Alternatively, you can add that money to a phone which is capable of recording video at a higher quality.

I'm not confused at all, my phone has a larger CMOS sensor size than this camcorder and records at a higher resolution of 4K @ 30fps or 1080P @ 60fps. The one thing it doesn't have is optical zoom, which is all my initial post was about.

The video quality looks quite good on youtube reviews. Remember how much you had to pay for far lesser quality mini DVR camcorders 15-20 years ago? Your getting a good deal for this price.

Image stabilisation is also something that many phones lack in video mode and optical image stabilisation is especially good.
There's also the handling and having a decent set of controls readily available which is important if you are doing something other than a quick point and shoot.
But if you are doing something that a decent smartphone struggles with the chances are you'd want a better camcorder than this as I hear the low end camcorders tend to have too many compromises which given the price is hardly surprising.
As is often the case, you get what you pay for.
