Can someone please explain the appeal of Google Home or Amazon Echo? So you spend 100 quid and this thing is basically sitting in one room of the house, when each of the household members already has Siri / Google Assistant on their phone which is on them all the time and does the exact same thing, Am I missing the point here?

I take the price of this going down due to the new one coming out soon? I have an Echo dot and it's excellent. It works seamlessly with Phillips Hue lights. Some of the content still leaves a bit to be desired but this a decent price.

My family has had an Amazon Alexa for nearly a year now.
It is amazing. Very useful and can hear your commands through a jumbo jet taking off with a load of singing stag do geezers.
Great machine.
I will not be buying the new unnecessary video version.
It's like THE BMW 5 series they replaced in 2010. The E60 was a perfect driving machine.
I took my F10 back and bought another E60 after 3 weeks

It's a great bit of kit. I recommend adding the 'Ask Google' skill to force it to use Google rather than the rather limited Bing search engine - very liberating and improves the experience massively.

im a bit unsure.. but at this price im hoping to get answers to what may be a very dumb question...
i dont have an amazon prime account- hence no access to amazon music etc... i do have a free subscription to deezer though.
i have yeelight strips in the kitchen.
just how much functionality can i realistically expect from this device if i was to get it. we have smartphones with music on, and music apps... can i ask alexa to open my music and play songs? sorry if the questions are lame.. the selling blurb makes the device sound wonderful, but thats if you are already fully plumbed in with certain subscriptions etc...
Thanks in advance

You clearly don't know how this technology works do you?
If this data was constantly streaming, it would be easy to spot. Like, *VERY* easy. There are loads of people, just wishing they can be the first to shout up about Alexa, or Cortana, or Siri constantly streaming voices to the NSA, but the FACT is that if it was, you'd see it in the IP traffic. You can't, because it's not there.
Educate yourself, don't believe every stupid thing you read on the internet, there's a lot of stupid out there.

The only issue I had is that if you have the sound on it so loud it struggles to hear you shouting Alexa at it.
So to combat that I got the remote which is handy for the volume adjusting alone and then you can say the command quietly into the remote rather than shouting across the room.

I've got a dot fixed to a landing wall outside the bathroom door. I have it connected via Bluetooth to some speakers mounted in the bathroom. I can control that dot from inside the shower whilst it is running over the noise of both shower and music playing. I do need to raise my voice to initiate, but she hears me fine after that.
They work brilliantly for me.
One thing I would say regarding the echo. I have one on my bedstead, fixed to a battery. When it's close to the wall, or something is close to it, it does restrict its hearing. Move it further away from the wall, and make sure nothing is obstructing the base.
Makes a world of difference to her ears

I replaced my Sonos Play 1 with 2 of these. The sound quality isn't as good but for my kitchen and listening to music on a sleep timer in the bedroom while going to bed it's absolutely ideal.
In the kitchen I use the timer and play music. You can also create shopping lists. I've tried to connect it to my Nest without success but that could also be useful.

Yes your right a house full of noisy kids does make it hard to control.
In saying that that it makes it hard to think or for anyone to hear me. Should I return the kids to get back to normality? Either that or recognise there is no perfect solution for every occasion.
We have a Dot in the kitchen. Handy for getting lights on while working with messy food covered hands or getting some tunes on.

I know what you mean but it's only used when playing music loud. Also allows me to control the volume from elsewhere so I can hear the kids have turned it up louder than they should do in the lounge but as it's Bluetooth I can override that from the kitchen.
Doesn't stop the times you are in the lounge just asking any question or setting timer etc.

Yes their beam-forming mic technology is very, very good.
However, for a bit more of a challenge, I built one out of a Raspberry Pi and it works perfectly (though of course the USB mic I got for a fiver online is nowhere near as sensitive).
Certainly a good price for what this offers and in comparison with prices elsewhere, though I feel it will be down to the £75 mark within the next few months as the early adopters peter out.
