This looks pretty good for £74.50pp (based on two people) - 4 Star hotel along with award winning breakfast and all on the Lake districts doorstep
Hunday Manor is a 4-star country-house hotel on the western edge of the Lake District, three miles from Workington. Winner of a VisitEngland Silver Award, the 18th-century manor is set in spacious grounds, and has views of the Solway Firth.
The intimate family-run hotel has 24 individually decorated rooms. It holds a VisitEngland Breakfast Award for the quality of its morning nosh, and it serves set-menu and à la carte dining options in the evening. The cosy lounge and bar, complete with log fires, are a perfect place to relax after a day of walking or an indulgent dinner.
For a coastal trip, the harbour towns of Workington and Whitehaven are less than 10 minutes' drive. The Lake District National Park is 15 minutes' drive, and the towns of Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick are within 50 minutes' drive. There's lots to do while you're at the hotel -- you can have a tipple at The Lakes Distillery at Bassenthwaite, 20 minutes' drive away, or walk the St Bees Head Heritage Coast, which is approximately 25 minutes' drive from the hotel. The AA-recommended Whinlatter Forest Park, a designated red squirrel reserve, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Its at least an hour drive to centre of the lakes where the hustle and bustle is. This is in an area not so attractive. I went there on a quick break once.......in the middle of them slaughtering all the cows with mad cow. Not an attractive area. Just happens to be in the same county as the lakes. Better off staying in Carlise or Lancaster - quicker to get to the lakes from them.

I think they've stopped slaughtering cows as a tourist attraction now.

The mad cow era was about 15 years ago at least!
Hunday Manor is a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds.
Cockermouth is about a 10 minute drive and is a beautiful little town (famous for William Wordsworth).
Keswick is about a 25 minute drive and again is a beautiful little town full of slate buildings, the hustle of tourists and walkers and then you also have the beautiful lake that it is set on.
I wouldn't write this deal off purely due to something that happened in the early 2000's and although it's not right on the lakes it's not a far drive.

this may not be the best place to stop to experience the more common areas of the lake District. but as another said, Keswick is not too far away and is a lovely place and there are plenty of nearby (1hr nice drive) places to visit.

I stayed here last October, lovely food, beautiful grounds, about a 25 min drive to buttermere and derwentwater 2 of the best lakes around. Must admit didn't notice any slaughtered cows but I did have a steak and ale pie in the pub close by. Hope I don't turn into a chicken!!!!!
