Just remember folks, most of mainland China will then be able to log into the camera IP address and admire your interior design, watch tv with you etc. Please do not place this camera in the bedroom, bathroom or anywhere else your tackle or spotty bum can be seen , unless you wish to become a YouTube star.
If anyone is interested in getting this - you can get it on Banggood for £17.21. Use the link below to add the camera to the cart and apply voucher "20xiaofang". Remember to login into your Banggood account first. If anyone is interested into posting this as a separate deal, feel free to do so, no credits required.
It is more likely that the user / installer has little or poor understanding of security.

Just received mine.
You can guess your way through the part English part Chinese app menu to get as far as monitoring the cam from a smartphone via Xiaomi's cloud server, and getting a phone app alert on movement.
What is rumoured to exist also is some free cloud storage of alerts with snaps, and someone even thought that Google cloud storage could be set up. If so I'd love to know how.

Just ordered two of these probably going to apply the hack to stop them phoning home to big brother in china. From all the reviews they look pretty good and seem to run well at night also!
On a side note seems the hack is developing pretty well with the git hub being update quickly.

I've got the Sricam and it is poor in my opinion, only able to be used via a flakey app, no ir cut filter and the wifi range was appalling (but it did have ethernet). I've also got this Smart cam and I find the Mi Home app crappy as well (but I generally hate apps and the Chinese doesn't help) although I want to disable that and use the hacks for security. The wifi range is really good with it and the hacks are quite basic at the moment although there are attempts to make them better but there are no guarantees with this. Overall I prefer this Smart cam due to the hacks, wifi range, potential and I generally don't want to move the cam position once installed so the PTZ function is a bit wasted.

It might be a great camera, I've given my reasons for suggesting otherwise, others have voted suggesting the same.
If you reckon you know better order one and come back with proof that we're all wrong.

I have seen quite few reviews for one i posted. It is also similar amount of ratings on gear best own site. For only a less im megapixels. It is has the ability to pan from left to right and up and down. It also has led for night vision and infra red, led. It is cheaper.
This one doesnt
I wonder why everyone is going on about this cam, when the one i posted actually can pan from left t right and up and down. Only slightly less quality.

what is the point of FTP? doesn't the cameras recording function stop once you enable RTSP ?
refaey
3 Apr 171#46
I personally did it out of curiosity. It provides different interfaces to the camera, RTSP, FTP, Telnet, ssh, scp, sftp plus controlling of IR filter & LEDs and managing the camera via a web interface
I plan to buy more Xiaomi home automation products so have no issues using MiHome.I will put the cameras (yes, I will buy more!) inside the house and only turn them on when it's empty so my spotty bum won't be there for the Chinese to watch :-)
k9plus1
2 Apr 17#45
I've been reading about the hack on Github today and was curious about why all the trouble to create a RTSP stream? Is it mainly to provide a direct stream that does not go through Mi servers?
I was curious about the hack because of the FTP services - I have an older D-link camera that i can set up to upload images every second to an FTP server. But newer cameras these days don't have FTP anymore.

Received mine this week.
Setup is easy; only took a few minutes, provided you choose your locale as 'Mainland China' in the MiHome app (you can still set the language to English so don't worry you won't need to learn Chinses).
Also tried the hack on Github - WOW!
I use it inside home and it's fine. Picture is clear enough. You can zoom-in but it's digital zoom so you won't be able to see small details.
Night vision is awesome - I can see my cat downstairs in complete darkness (just did it for the test - I normally leave the curtains open to let some light in so that he's not sleeping in total darkness - no animal was harmed during this test :-) ).
A bargain for ~ £20 - I will indeed try the rest of MiHome home automation accessories. Already ordered the light bulb for £13.
If you're worried about hacking just don't have a camera that is connected to the internet. The only computer that can not be hacked is one that is not connected to a network. Samsung and Google home automation products are 7-8 times more expensive and they're also connected to the internet and can be hacked. Personally, I use a VPN so almost hack-proof ;-)

after swearing for about 2 hours trying to get it connected to mi home app changed to China server and it all worked first time. however i find it the movement uploads to cloud don't show as available straight away. you get an alert go see what it is and find a default image with Chinese note that means absolutely nothing to me. many hours later the movement video may or may not work

also I have updated and now can not speak but can hear,i have searched and there seems no way to
down grade the firmware,
saying that I think these are great for the cost, set up to watch the property and send detention alerts
is great, I can watch all of the house now, from any where and store it in the cloud.
Great camera. Bought 2 a few weeks ago. No facility to upload to cloud drives.
4.5 gig of SD storage per day of recording.
I set it up for motion detection which will capture 15s clip every 5 minutes. The footage is stored on Mi servers. Great for monitoring areas which you aren't expecting motion. You can turn off notifications if you are monitoring areas of constant traffic

I got this before for around £15 and that was too much! It's total trash, impossible to set up properly, menu items make no sense. If you set for motion, you get a notification every time there is motion. You turn off motion and leave it on continuous record instead and you get zero footage.
Almost threw it in the bin. If there was still a FSFT section, I'd flog it.

you can but you cannot keep the infrared on as it will reflect off the glass. The way to get around this is to have pir flood lights at the front.

Took me a good while to work it out. But set the mi home app location to China. Add device. Pick the one that looks like a camera. You will then get a qr code on your screen. Show that to the camera close at first, then move away slowly. Once the camera registers the qr code, you'll get a different Chinese saying. "kung pow Hong poo" or something like that she says. Then it will search and pair. Keep pressing find/pair until it pair's. (mine took 7 or 8 tries)

I got this last time and for the price it's quite impressive. Fairly easy to set up after watching Youtube..... some instructions and spoken out from camera and in Chinese but if i can do it after 10 mins i think almost anyone can... Great for keeping an eye on the dog when your at work or nipping out to the shops.
