They had a promo where children went free last year which I took advantage of, then I discovered Skygardens and now that is now favourite, which if you go after 6pm, doesn't require booking.

Instead of going up the monstrosity that is the shard, I would recommend going for a drink at the duck and waffle, fl 40 heron tower (near liverpool street). https://duckandwaffle.com

Worst attraction in London! Too expensive and only worth if the glass windows were cleaned just before your visit

Sky garden (as linked to above) is *far* better. We go there 3 or 4 times a year and have drinks with friends.

The Sky Garden is absolutely worth a trip too - and it's free.

I've been wanting to go there but couldn't see any info on visits without booking. Some one said that even during the day you can go in without booking by queueing up?

For the adults... get the lift up to Aqua Bar (which is free) at the Shard and experience very similar views but with a nice beverage for the price of the tourist ticket...

I've never really understood the attraction of being taken up the shard :confused:

still overpriced - I'd maybe pay £10 but even then its pushing it when you can go to the sky garden for free

AND you get to come back down in a lift as well so it's also a 2 for 1 offer.

We did the Shard on Sat April 8th on a day trip to London. We went for the 13:30 slot which is cheaper. We qualified for a family ticket - and for 2 adults and 2 children it was £51.80. We all really enjoyed it and thought it was good value. It is very quick to get to the top and there are great views. It is very well organised and very little queuing despite the aiport style security. We did the London Eye the same day and had to queue for an hour even having pre booked tickets. The 2 were similarly priced (we got 2 for 1 Eye tickets through the "travel by train" site) but the Shard was much more enjoyable.

Why are the public opening times 10am to 6pm on weekdays then?

Would've got more heat had the title been "Take your mum up the shard". Got plenty of heat last time. :smile:

Monument and the Sky Garden are great options too. There's also the free Tate viewing gallery on the 10th floor of their newish building. It's 360 degrees and open air. Superb views over the river and look into the apartments where the owners are trying to sue the Tate (despite the Tate having planning permission years before the apartments).

if students can afford to waste money on this, then we need to be increasing tuition fees more.

Just go in for a drink. The bar is about half way up and you only pay for your drink. I went last year and did that. I certainly wouldn't pay to go to the top, i'd much rather go do a meal somewhere.

Went up for a drink the other week bit boring if you ask me but everybody's different so guess some think it's good but i live local and with so much around i dont find any of these tourist places a big deal.

We have an office in the Walkie Talkie and thus I go in the Sky Garden, which is free, regularly. Its better than the Shard, the floor is a bit lower but at 37 floors up its well high enough. Bar and restaurants there. Views on every side beat the Shard as on the correct side of the river. Tower of London down to Canary Wharf one side; Shard, City Hall, HMS Belfast etc another; St Paul's down to the London Eye another side; and the City- Gherkin, Cheese Grater etc the last side. I always wonder why people pay money to go up The Shard or on the London Eye. If you every want to eat in a restaurant go for the cheaper Brasserie- its better in my view. Have to book usually plenty of time in advance for the restaurants.
