Good price, but think I would struggle to read the time with this face.

This is a nice movement, you can get automatic watches as cheap as 6 quid from china, but the movements flat out stop working. This is a great movement for the money, and rotary are a decent brand, however, only if you can stomach the style of the watch.
ALSO with these deals they just get cheaper every day, seen it with a few other rotary watches, see the graph, it will keep getting cheaper untill they have moved all their stock OR reached their minimum profit price, looking at the curve on 3camels, you can assume it is fairly close to its cheapest price
For me I would wait for a seiko 5 in a style you like to go on sale, as I just couldn't get on with/read this dial.

Is Rotary one of these previously fairly well reputed watch makers, now owned by some Chinese outfit?

Bingo. Will have a Chinese seagull movement in it and the rather misleading "Est In Swiss" on the face. Rotary do have a Swiss made range called Les Orginales. Guess what? Chinese movements (Cl-888) shipped to Switzerland to be put together so that it qualifies on a cost basis. For £40, not bad but the brand itself has sold its soul.

just bought this , I hope it's similar to the one I had many years ago from Next which was an absolute bargain at £25. I don't like watches that are too big.
Noticed its splash proof which is a bonus
