This is the third mid contract price hike for me. It seems very person dependant as to whether they give a monkeys. For those that want to switch but keep the service John Lewis broadband is £20 a month with £30 quidco and is run by Plusnet.

When you get the email notifying you there should be this section in the email

We hope you’re happy with your products and services but if you do decide to leave because of these changes, we won’t apply any early termination charges. All we ask is that you call us to tell us within 30 days of getting this email and give us 14 days’ notice.

Most probably as soon as you tell them you want to leave they will either credit your account with an amount equal to the increase or agree to keep your price plan the same until the end of the term. They bank on customers saying oh its only £1 extra per month so can't be bothered to complain or better still not reading the email until after the 30 day notice is up by then its too late to do anything because of the termination charges.

Just joined plusnet yesterday, I paid for line rental saver, not sure if they will add £1 per month to my bill when price increases but it will still be much cheaper than BT which treat existing customers really poorly. Loyal customers are second class citizens.
Shame quidco hasnt tracked though.

I've been with plusnet for years on the line rental saver, when it goes up all that happens is you pay more next year.

They're also very good at lowering if you haggle. Was on £17.99pm standard, phoned them and got £11.99pm fibre. This kind of thing is useful leverage (though maybe not for you as you've just joined).

Sadly the actual broadband itself has gone downhill and is now perpetually patchy, probably due to their overlords at BT.

Word of warning if you pay up front for line rental saver and plusnet put their prices up mid term yes you can leave but they will not refund your money! That's why this year we didn't go for that.

Thanks, nice to know, my plusnet hasnt kicked in yet, only rang bt to cancel contract yesterday, didnt know there was a 30 day cancellation period, thought I could cancel when my contract expires in a few days.

Signed up to plusnet from BT. BT will send you an SMS about services being transferred. Call the number in the text with a query about transfer or something. Gets you straight through to retentions.
Offered me free Infinity 2 and BT sport's for 24 months.

At one point I wasn't paying any line rental or fees for the broadband for 2 years!

Is there anywhere to move to that is cheaper ?
It seems they all have an expensive activation charge now that wipes out any quidco / TCB

I currently pay £25 for line and unlimited fibre. I can't see anyone cheaper even after the £1 rise ( except Sky - but that has a 25Gb usage limit which makes having fibre pointless )
IT.Troll to simes

I've just signed up with TalkTalk. They were £21 per month once you factored in cash back (activation is free). Plusnet were £23 once you factor in activation, cash back and the extra £1 charge for caller ID. TalkTalk fix the price for the contract term and don't do any traffic shaping.

This is the same for every broadband company when there's a price increase. You can leave Talk Talk, Sky, Virgin BT when they have there price increases also. Unsure why this is specifically a Plusnet post.

28 Apr 17 #55
Yes, since I cancelled bt contract yesterday afternoon, I have received several emails and sms from bt, some are customer service feedback, im sure if I answered these they will tempt me with offers to stay with them.
Others tell me of likely hidden costs with other providers, the latest is to inform me that they will send me a letter through the post no doubt telling me the benefits of staying with bt.
Even when I was on the phone they offered me bt tv which I declined, I cant get fibre in my area so streaming tv is impossible, watching a 2 hour tv shown takes 3 hours due to buffering. Bt has said they were going to put fibre in our area (they say we will get it in next 12 months, that was 5 gears ago) still nothing, now I think they no longer will.
I also have 2 mobile sims with bt, I cant get reliable mobile signal at home so I have seperate payg sim.
Bt poor service all round.
Not staying with them even if they iffer me a better deal.
ifitsfreeitsmine
29 Apr 17 #56

I know plusnet is owned by bt, but plusnet is alot cheaper, I currently pay approx £28 per month for line rental and broadband (not fibre), plusnet is charging me £20.
If I dont ring bt at end of current 12 month contract and renegoiate a new deal it will rise to around £40. Hate how they treat loyal customers saving their best deals for new customers.
ifitsfreeitsmine
29 Apr 17 #57
Yes I saw same talk talk deal, the no activation fee would have saved me £10, I moved from bt to plusnet but plusnet was was a little cheaper per month so they cancelled each other out, talk talk cashback was also better than plusnet so talk talk may have been slightly cheaper, the reason I chose plusnet was when talk talk was hacked recently, the way the company acted did not give me confidence that talk talk's security (customers financial data).
IT.Troll
29 Apr 17 #58
I rang BT twice but they wouldn't budge and refused to give me a sensible renewal deal. No surprise then that they came top of the chart for "loyalty penalty" in a recent report by Citizens Advice. Such behaviour has been shown to disadvantage vulnerable customers.

I totally agree, I think the way utility /energy / telecom companies etc conduct business is criminal, they call it competition and say that it gives customers choice and low prices is a joke, to charge one person more than another for exactly the same product/service is not morally right, especially for the elderly or people who dont understand, they end up paying more than they should. Imagine royal mail charging different customers different prices for a first class stamp sent from one same address to another same address depending on whether they are new or old customers, people would call this unfair and they would be right. To think that royal mail charge the same to deliver a first class letter across town or to a remote scottish island should be applauded.

I was with plusnet a year or two ago, but their service was continually dropping out so I moved to talktalk. £25 a month all in, plus a mobile sim with 200 minutes, unlimited texts, and 500mb of data, all for free ! Not a huge allowance, but enough for me...and FREE !

29 Apr 17 #62
From my understanding, prepaid line rental saver is non refundable, plusnet and bt (not sure about other companies) make this clear before you pay.
I believe this is true even if you cancel the contract within the cooling off period.
What you have to be careful of is companies writing to you offering you a chance to take out annual line rental saver before current one has expired to beat upcoming line rental increase. If u take it out in advance, they have you over a barrel, you have to stay with them or lose money already paid so they wont offer you a better deal. These companies tactics is simple they have standard price say £20 but if you take out a new contract and haggle they will get your custom by offering it to you for say £10 once your contract expires (in 12 or 18 months), price goes up to standard price price of £20 (plus price increase). If you do nothing and renegotiate annually or move providers you will end up paying far more than you need to.

29 Apr 17 1 #63
all these broadband companies are ****. every single one of them keeps upping the price yet providing the same service.

ofcom needs to do something.

last year i was paying £26, now plusnet want me to pay £32 a month for the same service.
newbuyer17
29 Apr 17 #64
In principle I agree, but you could say the same about a 12 month contract being non-refundable/non-cancellable.
The price rise cancellation rules trump that principle.
And the wording is alway 'without penalty'
Having gone through the small print it really isn't clear, and I think it should be one way or the other.
Ofcom must have looked at it but I've never found any evidence.

They tried this with me but one mention of Ofcom guidance and the agent went away spoke to his manager and then gave a full refund. You should raise a complaint and escalate it to Ofcom if you have already left and did not get your refund.

OFcom guidance on this is quite clear. In particular the guidance around leaving GV9.6 say: Terms and/or practices which frustrate the practical effect of GC9.6 are liable to attract suspicion of non-compliance with the relevant rules.

So effectively anything that makes the process easy for your to leave e.g. having "policies" of not refunding line rental would attract the suspicion of OFcom.

Link to Ofcom Guidance on “material detriment” under GC9.6 in relation to price rises and notification of contract modifications

"Terms and/or practices which frustrate the practical effect of GC9.6

I would suggest using the mse resolver tool to complain as it makes it easy to keep track and suggests auto escalation at the right time.

According to the ofcom guidance any practice that frustrates the process of exiting after a price rise is deemed to go against gc9.6 guidance (Google it) so you should definitely complain if they refused to give you a prorated refund of prepaid line rental.

Plusnet don't offer 55/10 to new customers. They converted some old 40/20 customers to 55/10 last year. Currently it s only BT who offer 55/10 at £29/£35 (new/existing).

Except Plusnet are now under contract as they took the early termination fees. For a contract to be valid there has to be consideration, so when I paid specific exit fees for X days of contract left, this is in consideration for the original contract being upheld on their side for exactly X days. Also bugs me that my neighbours get 13 meg roughly with sky and I get less than half that. I'd move but surely they are all the same? I've not been impressed though with plusnet their standard router is poor

You have to wait for them to send you an email titled "Important news about your service." At the bottom of the email it tells you you can leave penalty free as long as you notify them within 30 days of receiving the email.

I contacted Plusnet via the online chat this morning and have cancelled citing the price increases on their website. They offered me a slightly cheaper deal (£33 a month 78Mb with a new 18 month contract) but I have chosen to leave. They've added the no term fee flag to my account and I am free to join a new provider.

I didn't receive the email so you should be ok to go ahead and cancel straight away.

Think of it more as in a football or similar being contracted and buying out the rest of their contract so they can move elsewhere. The exit fees are paid and the contract is null and void.

What was your speed before as I'm on the 38mps fibre with line rental and unlimited calls and wondering if you got upgraded to the 78mps when you said you were cancelling ?

I was hoping for this!

I only switched back to Plusnet in February and my Quidco cashback confirmed on the same day this price increase was announced (although annoyingly only £40 instead of the expected £60 but I've raised a claim).

Did the same with BT with before that when they put their prices up and was actually in profit from them due to the cashabck and BT reward card.

The best way to punish phone and broadband companies increasing prices for the same service each year, and taking advantage of loyal customers by only offering good deals to new customers is to play them at their own game. Always compare prices at the end of a contract, haggle for a better deal or leave, and take advantage of mid-contract price rises to do the same.

My friend hadn't as of a few days ago. He rang them up as wanted to jump to the BT deal posted here and they said he'd been missed

I'd think ofcom would be keen to hear from anyone who still hasn't heard once we get to 30 days from the price increase.

12 May 17 #118
Thanks for this I'm in the same boat, I paid 1 years Line rental but that takes me to Sept. But the window to leave is 30 days AFTER the email was sent some time in April! I suppose I could leave and take the hit. I've called them and they were kind enough to reduce my contract from 18m to 12m which is a step forward  So it might be worth calling them to see if something can be done. It's mad I have to alternate between BT and Plusnet each contract to get the best deal and cashback. No change in my hardware as I just use a BT VDSL modem and a cable modem (ASUS) and all I need to do is change the CHAPS Auth on the ASUS. I'm on my third PlusNet contract with this weird dance I have to do switching each time. I've tried Virgin they are hopeless in my area. Only need internet so the PlusNet / BT switch around seems to work ok.

Thanks OP for the heads up at least I got my contract duration reduced to 12m

12 May 17 #119
There offering has been scaled back I switch every 12m and when I left them last I had uncapped upload now they cap the upload. This effectively limits download speed. Also their phone offering has had its price increased a lot. I use an SPA3000 and Voipstunt so incoming calls are via PlusNet and outgoing via VoipStunt.

Customer service staff on the whole are really good, but have to agree the service and quality has gone down.

Having said that BT purchased them in 2006! http://telecoms.com/8248/bt-buys-plusnet-in-cash-deal/ but in the last few years PN services and pricing has lost some of its appeal. I'm off to BT Sept with what ever cashback deal is around.

12 May 17 1 #120
There's some posts and links towards the start of this deal that discuss getting up front line rental refunded due to an OFCOM clause, although some people said they had to remind them of this and chase to get it.

12 May 17 #121
So I called to tell them I was leaving early, exercising my right (as they advised in the email): Came home to a "We're sorry to hear you're leaving us
Here's what you need to know
"

"As you're moving your service before the end of your minimum term, you'll need to pay a charge for the remaining months. Based on your transfer date, we've calculated this to be £100.10. This may change if your transfer date changes. "

So much for "We hope you're happy with your products and services, but if you do decide to leave because of these changes, we won't apply any early termination charges."

13 May 17 #122
It might be an automated message I got something like when I left a contract early due to a price hike. The email spoke of a £150+ charge. I called and they confirmed no charges would be due. I'd contact PlusNet Customer support and get them to confirm the situation and ask them to follow up with an email / note on their system so you have evidence that no charges would be incurred.

Thanks I had a quick scan and there was a post #80 that mentioned Ofcom but no mention of a specific decision.

I noticed that BT's policy is to refund unused pre-paid line rental:

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/feb/22/bt-refuses-refund-prepaid-line-rental-cancel-service (Recent news confirming BT does refund unused prepaid line rental as PlusNet are part of the BT group I'd hope this has some weight)

LankyChris
13 May 17 1 #124
Yeah didn't read in detail as doesn't apply to me but think the gist was that OFCOM says they should refund but they need reminding/convincing to do it, possibly via a complaint.

spoke to plusnet as my price increased, currently only on adsl broadband with anytime calls to landlines/mobile £27.98. They offered £18.99 Line rental, £8 call package (anytime landline/mobile) 99p caller display £12.01 for the fibre extra, 18 month contract, total £40 a month. Is this a good deal?
Thar
13 May 17 #127
If you price up what they offered you on their web site as a new customer it works out at £39, so I don't think it's a good deal personally.
LankyChris
13 May 17 1 #128
You'd probably get a better deal elsewhere. If you don't want to move at least look around then get them to match what you find.

Have a look at the BT deal:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/bt-unlimited-superfast-fibre-infinity-1-line-rental-w-end-calls-10-65pm-after-c-2682944

It only has weekend landline calls but imagine if you add a similar call package it would still work out cheaper, and is only 12 month contract. Caller display is free for 1st 12 months on BT.

Thanks for this and the previous advice.

1) I contacted Plusnet and they reduced my 18m contract (expired in 2018) to 12m (expires Sept 2017) when I asked about a refund on the line rental saver was told their manager had gone on a break etc..
2) I reread the posts here and contacted Plusnet again today. I said "I want to leaved due to the price increase" was offered "free broadband etc" politely declined (I'm paying £5 pm for 38meg down VDSL + Line rental now), Was told they would check with their manager I mentioned "OFCOM guidance on this is quite clear. In particular the guidance around leaving GV9.6 say: Terms and/or practices which frustrate the practical effect of GC9.6 are liable to attract suspicion of non-compliance with the relevant rules" a minute later was told I could leave today, Line rental saver credit would be £61 odd and discounts on my account would cease from today, I should contact my new provider (BT) ASAP
3) Signed up with BT on their 50mb service for 12m with topcashback etc.
Thanks again to all the folk on this thread who helped especially the OP, LankyChris and Boneless for the OFCOM quote!

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/plusnet-up-prices-your-chance-leave-penalty-free-2675392?p=30730908

I had issues with the Plusnet Chat (I think its busy) so called on the 0800 number. Off to topcashback and BT  Its mad I have to reconfigure my ASUS router CHAP AUTH each time I switch from PN to BT and back again no hardware to change as I have a BT VDSL modem connected to the ASUS cable modem. Regarding the call packages they are all quite expensive compare to VOIPSTUNT, do not use a PC just a £20 SPA3000 that routes outgoing calls to VOIPSTUNT (SIP) and incoming via BT / PLUSNET

In view of the BT deal knocking about and the fact my contract with Plusnet was due to expire in July I phoned up to see what they could sort out. The long and short of it is that I'm sticking on the 38-40Meg fibre with eve+wknd calls. Got the line rental saver in at today's price (i.e. £15.50/month) and gonna continue to pay £3.33/month for the fibre (fixed for 2 years). I'm now in a 2 year contract (and the 2nd year will be £16.50 or more for the line rental) but overall more than happy with that as my Plusnet experience has been great so far.

What's the cheapest way to get BT Sport for next season? Anybody know offhand? (NowTV?)

Contacted Plus.net by online chat and was told my e-mail hadn't gone out yet. They said everyone is affected but they are sending them in batches to be able to deal with the fall out. Was asked if I wanted my chat transferred to the Options team - which of course I did. Got my contract reduced to a new 12 months (was 16 remaining from 18) at £1.50 lower than now plus free Caller Display (normally 99p). Net reduction of £3.49 per month after their £1 rise. Thanks OP.

This is the third mid contract price hike for me. It seems very person dependant as to whether they give a monkeys. For those that want to switch but keep the service John Lewis broadband is £20 a month with £30 quidco and is run by Plusnet.
tonez
20 May 17 1 #138
Thanks for this, very helpful. I'm currently paying £21.32 for broadband & phoneline. John Lewis charge £20 for broadband & phone line (with free evening & weekend calls thrown in). I may not switch but it is certainly useful to have this knowledge when negotiating with PlusNet over the phone.

23 May 17 #139
I did. However they insisted on renewing my contract again for 18 months, so I declined. Was offered £12 Unlimited Fibre Extra Broadband, plus £19 for the phone line including Weekend/evening calls.
So I just chose to cancel my contract, I'm now on a pay-monthly thing wit them without any contractual tie-in until I choose what to do.

Just got my email for a £1 increase per month on my line rental, not sure if I should threaten to leave them?

What you think? It's only a £1 I guess, still paying £29 (£1 included increase) a month for Phoneline no calls and Fibre 2 up to 76Mb speeds
Thar

I'm paying £27 for the same on a deal that ends in July. Wondering whether to bargain for a new deal now or nearer the time but my line rental is paid to November.

23 May 17 #142
Just tried mate, they said nothing they can do as it's already discounted a lot which is true. I new deal for same package on BT is £45 a month and on PN now its £37.50 plus £25 activation fee (BT too charge activation fee) I paid nothing when I joined in October on a 18 month contract for £28 a month.

Will stay with what I have got £29 a month for 76MB and phone line included is cheap compared to what deals are out there now.

Thanks OP anyway for letting us know.
