Could someone explain in layman's terms what the point of a £200+ (including specialised installation) smart thermostat is compared to a manual £20 thermostat? Are you paying 10x the price because it pays for itself in savings over X number of years or is it so you can change the temperature from your sofa instead of having to stand up and walk 10 paces to a wall thermostat?

I agree, it seems that the only benefit is that these thermostats can be operated remotely by say a mobile phone, I'm not sure that there are any other benefits ....... perhaps somebody else would like to comment?

It looks fairly easy from the instructions, but I do not have total faith in my ability not to kill myself or screw up the electrics in the house.
I want to have the thermostat on a stand, so it would just be the plate that needs changing around.
I was not entirely sure how it connects to the water tank upstairs....anyone able to explain that to me?

If it's replacing an existing wired thermostat, it should only take around 30 mins to fit and wire up.

Shame that the code isn't working any more, I have plumbers coming to fix a valve so thought I'd get this installed at the same time.
They said it's about 2 hours work, so £70-£100, which seems fairly expensive but the valve was going to be £25 to fit and that would be included.
Decisions decisions!
Yes they seemed to have turned off the code for the nest product. The code still works on other items over £100
EDIT: If you add something else over £100 to the order, the code works. You could then take that other item back to the store to get a full refund, thus leaving the £20 discount on your order off of the nest. Might work?

Go for it! Our thermostat was old...but that made it easier in a way as it was a wired version rather than a wireless one. Our boiler is new and it was just a case of working out the correct cables to the programmer and swapping that out for the Heat Link. Good luck.

You've just given the flaw in your system right there. You come home to a cold house and have to wait with while it thaws out. These devices allow you to turn on the heating _before_ you get in so it's nice and toasty when you get through the door. Or allow you to turn it off if you (or someone else) forgot to do so. And, like a smart thermostat, you can automate different temperatures during the day / evening /night. 18 degrees is far too warm for us at night - we turn it off and have the windows open - even in winter!

You're in the house and the thermostat in the hall is at 22 degrees. When you're the last person to leave the house you turn it off 20 minutes before you leave (10 degrees). You turn it back when you come back home. At night, first one to bed turns it down to 18 degrees. Hot water: turn off the 'Eco' mode on your Worcester Bosch combi as it saves £20/month in not constantly heating about 600 ml available in the boiler if you don't need pre-heated water.
Obviously, cold from me. I just don't see the sense.

Thats what I was waiting for, I was hoping if it get release it will cause these to drop in price. During Black friday they were priced around £160, all the retailers followed Amazons price, and then put them back up once amazon ran out of stock. It makes it so you don't have to touch it at all, it learns your routine and tracks your phone so it turns it off for you when you leave instead of a timer or you accidentally forgetting to turn it off. You get monthly reports and how much long you have had it on each day, it adjusts to the wether. Great piece of kit and for under £200 it's worth it. Plus it looks class instead of a crap £20 horrible grey plastic junk stuck on your wall that's an eye sore.

I had one in the house I bought and to be honest it was amazing, but not really looked into the cost saving element but will try to help...
The system learns how long your house takes to heat up so on a normal system you program it to come on at the same time every morning for where as you can tell the Nest when it needs to be said temperature and it works out when it needs to come on so potentially comes on at a later time saving money...also It takes into account outside temp so on cold days it comes on earlier, or warmer days comes on later this potential money saver, but also makes sure you are warm.
The app produces a nice report to tell you how long the heating has been used stats on daily, weekly and monthly figures so easy to spot patterns trends or spot if someone has been abusing it in the daytime or weekends etc.
The app allows you to very quickly to change the schedule so if you work shifts etc you can easily stop the heating coming on when your away etc.
The app is great for checking the temp when you are away, so if you have pets etc. Also if you have been out in the cold and are on you way back home spontaneously you can quickly put the heating on so it's warm for your arrival home.
Mine was attached to the wall but guess the ones that are not can be place in the exactly where they need to be I.e not in the hallway. The nest also has like sunlight protection so if the sun light shines on the thermostat then it doesn't get confused where as direct light on a normal thermostat thinks the room is hotter than it actually is.
Anyway hope this rambling helped, sure the website is more helpful though :-)

We have a two zone property with an unvented water cylinder.
If you are in the same boat I would recommend having a nest pro installer fit it for you. He was here for four hours doing all the thermostats and walking us through it all and testing it. If you just have a single thermostat in your house then you only need one and as long as its powered then you can install this yourself pretty easily.
If you do choose to install yourself then remember, take photos of what you have first before you touch it! Our pro installer said half his jobs were people who had bought it and tried it themselves and failed, the majority of which had caused a domestic :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for heads up OP ...
Wondering if someone can answer me a question though ... I've been put off the likes of Hive etc, as these devices need a separate unit connecting to your Broadband Router (yet another box cluttering up the sideboard) ..
As I understand it, Nest doesn't require this separate unit, as it's WiFi enabled - is that right ?
So I'd have the Nest thermostat on the wall, but what else does it come with ? How does that connect to the wall mounted boiler in the kitchen which has a separate ACL Lifestyle CH / HW programmer there ? Does that get replaced also ?
Hot Water tank is upstairs in the airing cupboard - I'm guessing that also has a unit attached to it ?
Cheers

We had 2 Nest Thermostats replacing traditional hard wired Thermostats (2-zone system (upstairs & downstairs)).
Nests are wifi.
They come with a control unit which in our case went in the attic, with the hot water tank.
The traditional timer near the boiler was disconnected and removed - you don't need it anymore, it's all done through the Nests.
House has never been warmer - not sure if I am using less gas though.

In London a typical install quote is £100-£120. Discounts for two Nests. I recently had my two installed for £180, but I actually gave the guy a £20 tip because it was such a big job. I have a 2-zone system boiler. It took him 5-hours to install the Nests. He was a Nest accredited specialist installer. System works great. Just be wary of 30-40 min Installation suggestions. If you do choose to install yourself then remember, take photos of what you have first before you touch it! Our pro installer said half his jobs were people who had bought it and tried it themselves and failed, the majority of which had caused a domestic :stuck_out_tongue:
Also can anyone recommend an installer in Lincoln area and cost? Thanks.
Cheers
Nests are wifi.
They come with a control unit which in our case went in the attic, with the hot water tank.
The traditional timer near the boiler was disconnected and removed - you don't need it anymore, it's all done through the Nests.
House has never been warmer - not sure if I am using less gas though.
I'd say no more than £40 install as shouldn't take a professional more than 30mins
£40 being Midlands where i live, expect maybe £70 if in London
Mine is on the stand not fixed to the wall.
Great bit of kit well worth it if you are a gadget man
So I've transferred my supplier and ordered a Nest from B&Q instead! :man:
In the end it was down to Netatmo or Tado for me, glad I went Netatmo though.
You can get it for around £126 maybe even cheaper if you shop around. I also love the design compared to the comparatively gaudy hive/nest
Hate Hive's new online dashboard mind
Have installed 2 and easy to use and program (programed it from phone)
