Off the back of my MSI deal yesterday, I figured I would take another look to see what else was out there. Found this MSI Gaming Laptop with a GTX960M with a nice saving of just over £100, plus some freebies to sweeten the deal! :sunglasses:

this is a standard price for a standard gaming laptop built with last generation technology. let's just chuck in a mouse and mouse mat to make it seem like a value deal.

That fast NVMe SSD makes it better than "average" for £650 and the decent 4-core KabyLake i5 chip shouldn't run too hot, so it looks pretty good for the money. I'm guessing it's not an IPS screen though as they would probably have mentioned if it was?

According to the website there is an nvme m.2 ssd socket free so you can add one upto 2tb from what I have seen about, it should be faster then the sata3 ssd
steve_bezerker
12 Apr 17 1 #14
I know it's a bit of an on-going joke that people branded as 'elitists' would show up to say this machine is garbage because it's not brand new, but in all honesty could you really look at these specs and say it's worth the price? I've built computers my entire life and these parts look incredibly overpriced to me.

To sum it up:-
Averageish processor - Yes it's a quad core but it clocks all the way up to 3.5ghz (how hot would it even run?)
Entry level gaming card (won't run latest titles in 1080p 60fps)
No IPS panel - standard laptop sized screen.
8GB of Ram.
HDD in 2017. R.I.P

I would not consider this a 'gaming' laptop in any sense of the word. This is more like an 'every day' kind of use laptop, not gaming, unless you're only intention is to play minecraft.
owenhehe to steve_bezerker

When looking at a laptop, specs are only 50% of the whole picture. Cooling, design, reliability are all important.
SFJnet to steve_bezerker
12 Apr 17 1 #18
I guess the thing is, you've built a lot of computers but I'm guessing you don't build laptops? It's almost always cheaper to build a good desktop rig as compared to buying off the shelf but that's not usually an option if you want a laptop.

This laptop will easily play CS:GO at 60+ fps / 1080p on medium/high settings. I sometimes use my laptop with a i5-4210U (Which is a lot worse than this processor) and an 860m, and get 70-100 fps on mostly low settings.

OP you need to put the RAM size in the title  It's 8GB

I found a couple of these on eBay, first one is a good price more RAM, better CPU (i7) but a refurb and GTX 950M instead of GTX960M, the second one is the same model exactly and EBuyer, so Ebuyer got it for more on eBay, seems weird unless I'm missing something.

The rest seems to be from USA or home sellers.

So it seems a decent price to me.

I've done laptops before but don't usually bother because I find laptops extremely limiting and contradictory of themselves. I find tablets to be MUCH more ideal for everyday usage due to the low demand in specs for general browsing and office based programs. I find the more you try to juice a laptop up to turn it into a gaming powerhouse - the most of the core function of a laptop you lose - portability.

Higher performance laptop builds tends to be heavier and bigger, making them harder to move around. I also find the range of hardware available to modern day laptops to be a joke when you look at how powerful a lot of the micro-atx hardware can be they put laptops to shame and are only just about bigger.

I just feel like the words gaming and laptop don't belong in the same sentence with this current level of technology - unless you're happy splurging well over £2k and comfortable with lugging a huge 19" laptop around with you.

Nice laptop....but only if you bought it in 2015.

I think you'd be pretty silly to drop £650 on a 'gaming' laptop in 2017 with a 960m, when the 1050Ti offers a noticeable performance improvement for around ~£800 (and you'll probably get deals on those for around £750 towards the end of the year).
brilly to Picard123
12 Apr 17 2 #30
before anyone replies asking for a link to any of these equivalent 1050ti deals for 800 (or maybe 899.99 is about 800?) be warned they dont exist but you will be told to google for them ...but hey... one day they'll be cheaper

It's alright considering the warranty if you're after a mid range laptop from a high street retailer. At least you can go and have a look and see if the build is right.
drasim
12 Apr 17 #34
You can get 1050Ti for under £800 if you can be flexible with the build, i.e. lose the Windows license. The Optimus VIII is possibly the only one though.
brilly
12 Apr 17 #35
do you mean the 829 omen with the 1050? so ... not the 1050ti which is different

not equivalent is it then? 92quid or something less so you can steal one from elsewhere :smirk:
drasim
12 Apr 17 #36
Like I say if you're willing to be flexible. Not everyone will want the same build, and not everyone will want an additional license if they have a retail disc. It's different options for different needs.
steve_bezerker
12 Apr 17 #37
Not really a lot of difference in the 2 cards and the 1050 still puts the 960M to shame.
The cards benchmark almost exactly the same, the only difference being that the dedicated memory pool is obviously much larger on the Ti.

You'll probably hit low-medium settings in more modern titles at the native res of 1080p with an fps of 30-60.

Price point seems about right for an off the shelf branded "gaming laptop". Just know what you are buying! Don't expect anything above low/medium settings @ 1080p.

If you wanted to try and help things it would be worth chucking in an SSD right off the bat, that will yield you a nice boost in performance across the board, particularly in games that rely heavily on loading textures on the fly. Also an upgrade to 16GB may be beneficial if you are multi tasking, with more games natively 64bit you can see RAM usage jump up a fair bit these days.

All in all, it's a decent lappy if you are on a budget, however spend another 200-300 and you'll get something nearly twice as fast with a 1050ti, i7 and an SSD already installed. Granted that is a jump in cost, but honestly the boost in performance would be well worth it.

steve_bezerker
13 Apr 17 #46
The whole point of buying a 'gaming laptop' would be to keep up playing games. Why would ANYBODY waste £650 on a laptop to play games on low at 40-50fps. Surely anybody who is not an idiot would just buy a console for sub £300 and play on medium at 30-60fps depending on games. What is the benefit of the 'gaming laptop' if you have to drop another 300 pounds and still have to play at lower specs than a console.

You sound pretty clueless.
BigOrkWaaagh
13 Apr 17 #47
Well, I'm sure there's at least one major benefit of having a laptop over a console. But I'm so clueless I just can't put my finger on it. Could you please help me out, O wise one?
PauloCot
13 Apr 17 #48
See a lot of criticism on these comments about TN panels as opposed to IPS. I've never had an IPS panel myself so don't really know if the difference. Is it something I should care about and are they as noticeable as I've been reading?
steve_bezerker
13 Apr 17 #49
There is no benefit. None at all. That's exactly the point. You're not going to be playing games on the bus with your laptop out, and any portability on a 15 inch laptop is indefinitely shared with the ability to move around a current gen console. A PS4 weighs less than a laptop and is probably smaller, if not the same size.

You can do office based things on tablets and smart-phones (often faster because the app is optimised for it) and play better quality games on a console than you could with the laptop

Have you ever been sat at a laptop at an angle and the screen is all dark? That's because the TN panel is built to be addressed from the front. IPS panels can be viewed from any angle and don't suffer the same blacked out colour effect that TN panels often suffer from. TN panels in this day and age are a big no-no.
BigOrkWaaagh
13 Apr 17 #50
So now we're buying a tablet and a console? You're not far off the cost of this laptop. Suppose you have a significant other, or even children who want to watch TV. Now you can bust out your laptop. Suppose you're away from home for a few days. You can bust out your laptop. That you literally cannot comprehend this says a lot about you!

Sorry. should have clarified, In terms of gfx cards and motherboards they are good but in terms of laptops they are a nightmare. I've had various components and only once had an issue with a mobo and was resolved fairly painlessly.

I know two people that each bought an msi laptop 12-18 months ago and both have had issues (one was the screen the other was a battery), both had to fight tooth and nail with customer services to get them to agree to take it back to be fixed, once they shipped the laptops off (which they had to pay for), they had to chase via email and phone for the next 2-3 weeks to get any feedback. MSI then tried to argue that they needed to pay for the fixes or that they had caused the problem themselves so not a hardware fault (they are both, as you put it, geeks, both work in IT and avid gamers for the 20 years, build their owns pc's etc... so they know that msi are trying to pull the wool over there eyes).

One ended up paying for the fix and paying to have it shipped back to him, he has since sold it. The other paid to just have it shipped back, the hard drive had been formatted and the case is damaged, that was 2 months ago, he is still battling with them and trying to take them to court.

When you compare that to other companies the customer service is awful. For a gaming laptop i would go with Dell who have great onsite support, yes they have issues with laptops (which company doesn't?), but they are fixed fairly quickly and painlessly. Go for a cheap msi and you might get 12 months hassle free use, but expect a nightmare and to be 'laptop-less' for the best part of two months if something goes wrong.
tryn2help
14 Apr 17 #52
Thanks for that, I had no idea about their customer services - that's very important for me, I've had some terrible times with dreadfully poor customer services, most recently John Lewis (previously praised them on here several times, but good grief they really messed me around recently, still in shock).
Customer services standards appear to be dropping across the board, doesn't matter how good the product is if it's got no back up (my daughter has had an ongoing nonsense with LG regarding a malfunctioning flagship phone). :disappointed:

17 Apr 17 #53
Console sub ~£300 and my tablet cost me £115, but you can pick up a great tablet for £70-80. I'm still about £250 better off whichever way you spin it. Laptops and notebooks are utterly redundant in this day and age for anything other than home computing, which if you have the space you are 10x better off performing on a desktop. The market knows this. That's why you have hundreds of % increase in ATX and form-factor builds breaking through the market and literally no advancements in the laptop/notebook area(except for maybe wi-fi which phones have been improving on for years)(lol!)

Even GPU's are being designed with small towers in mind - Nobody is designing anything new for laptops because they know it's becoming redundant and hardware doesn't need to advance to complete the tasks people want to buy a laptop for. CPU and RAM capability is all WAY down on even the most up to date laptops rendering them often slower than smartphones.

New snapdragon smartphones have quad-core CPU's that would easily match this 'gaming' laptop.

I can't be bothered with you're petty 'argument' but the fact that you don't see how useless a piece a technology a laptop is, definitely shows the kind of idiots that such a 'deal' is marketed towards.

What are you smoking? My laptop has an i7 and a 1070 gtx so I don't think you quite know what you are talking about. and I don't know what up to date laptops you are referring to which have inferior performance to smart phones. I have a gaming laptop, a gaming pc and shock horror a couple of consoles. They all have their pro's and cons. I see and live in a world where they all have their places.
steve_bezerker
18 Apr 17 #56
You know reading comprehension is a thing right? I didn't claim that up to date laptops have inferior performance to smart phones. I said that up to date smartphones have superior performance to THIS laptop.
Also it's sweet that you feel you need to defend your laptop with an I7 1070. How much did it cost you? You'll see (with reading comprehension again) that you would have paid a ridiculous amount of money for your laptop because I can say in all certainty that you didn't pick that up for less than £1,700 with those specs. If you show me otherwise i'll eat my hat.

You must also surely realise that the 1070 is inferior to the 980Ti, the 1080, The 1080Ti and the Vega 10? As well as crossfire anything above RX480's.That's not exactly a powerhouse, it even benchmarks similar to old generation cards.

steve_bezerker
18 Apr 17 #58
Do none of you claim ownership over the basic English language?

The debate was not about whether smartphones can run AAA titles - FYI they can't, yet.
Using your example -the debate was about whether it was worth dropping £650 on a laptop that might not even run the Witcher 3 at 30 FPS when you can buy a console that will at least output 30fps for sub £300.

Also the comparison between smartphones and laptops is aimed primarily at the CPU performance and overall PROCESSING performance of the devices. I doubt this laptop would even be able to play the Witcher 3 at all so in your debate (which is a hilarious example) neither a smartphone or a laptop can run the Witcher 3.

Can you people learn to pick up a book or something, because absolutely none of you know how to take context from a statement.

lets start with the witcher, this laptop plays it - not amazingly but medium 720p is easy enough thus 'probably wont play' blatantly incorrect
console plays it higher res but afaik framerates arent anything to shout about

then you go on about relevance/context - as a phone cant play 'any AAA' games bringing it up is irrelevant
how is the screen size on the phone?
how is the screen on the console? just keep it in your pocket?
how does your console run photoshop etc?
ever heard of allowing people to decide what they want rather than forcing your own 'educated' opinion of their 'needs'? guess not

Because paying £650 for a laptop to play TW3 at 720p 23FPS is a smart thing to do. Nothing opinionated about that, that's straight up facts son.
