You may find similar bikes at Halfords and Decathlon that might feature better components for only a little bit more. I'd personally put this bike at good value at between £150-180 but its pretty much full price for the spec at £229. It does look the part but in the detail there are quite a few failings.

The Rockrider is better than the Diamondback of this thread mainly because of overall higher grade components and the fact it has a cassette based rear wheel not a freewheel which is stronger. The gears for example on the Diamondback are entry level and very basic, not particularly durable or reliable for slightly rougher use.

The Rockrider is basically fit for purpose where as this Diamondback looks to be an ok frame but most of the rest of it is low end components and is very limited and not really a competent mountain bike, it would need many upgrades to be so.

As a brand I'm not saying BTwin is better than Diamondback its just Btwin offers much better value as the shop chain that sells the bike (Decathlon) directly imports the bikes themselves or at least the components (may have some european basic assembly) where as Diamondback is a brand that has to import then sell to wholesalers who then sell to bike dealers all needing a profit margin themselves. It just means a Diamondback bike of the same spec as Btwin would normally cost a fair chunk of money more. So if you have a limit of only £250 to spend your money goes further with Decathlon. Halfords is the same situation often they have some very good deals on their own brands of bikes. They are the largest seller of bikes in the UK and import a huge number of bikes under their own brands some are exceptional value. Most big bike brands can't offer a entry level competent bike at £250, you'd be looking more at £350-400 shop price probably as a minimum.

Hotukdeals seems to have mucked up the link above by trying to affiliate it but this is a better bike for £240. Only £11 more. I'm not saying its amazing but doesn't have the major failings of the Diamondback.

Are you saying its not a freewheel? Because it certainly looks like one to me and besides it's tourney derailleurs so to be expected. Maybe your are disagreeing that freewheels are weaker than cassette hubs but there are literary 100s of sites that would disagree with you on that one. You need to add some facts to your argument.

Definitely one for the local kids to 'look cool' pulling wheelies on - not for grown-ups to do proper riding on.
Reduced to about what it's worth (maybe) but £200 will buy you a very good used bike if you know what you're doing and have a bit of patience.

If you just want to go 'off-road' on stuff like bridle paths this will probably be fine. If you want to take it around proper red trails with drops and stuff then probably not.

That's the point it doesn't even have a cassette its using a weaker freewheel. Freewheel design is much weaker, it's much easier to bend the axle with a freewheel and as you can imagine a mountain bike actually used off road will damage this with a drop. The cassette based hub have the bearings much farther apart that makes its harder to bend the axle and is standard on most higher quality mountain bikes. A Shimano tourney freewheel like this is pretty much standard fitment on the very cheapest bikes even sub £100, it is entry level.

Bought my so a Diamondback BMX a couple of years ago. Thoroughly disappointed and brakes are awful, even after pad replacement, to the point he never wanted to ride it.

I'm sure they had a good name back in the day, but certainly couldn't recommend them now.

Yes it is cheap. But it also is crap.
There is no point in cheap mountain bikes. They are too heavy and too fragile for actual trial riding. And they make no sense as a general purpose bike.

Seems like for under £300, unless it's a really ridiculous offer (i saw a Calibre Two Two at £250 which seemed too good to be true), you're just gonna end up with something that's had too many corners cut to make it look the part.
