The current Dell 15" 1366x768 screens have a terrible reputation. Massive shame as older ones were pretty decent.

Apologies , I don't know enough about laptops to recommend any but the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 looks good . My main criteria for a laptop is full HD screen and SSD. I do have an upper price limit of 800 pounds so I'm thinking get this or wait for more Easter bargains.
John Lewis is always a plus for me to buy from and I'll try n pop in tomorrow to have a look.

Edit, tbh if it's a full HD, you're not really going to be disappointed unless you need a really acute viewing angle on the screen .

Probably worth adding that it has a 3 year guarantee, as that is really good at this price and usually only on business class machines. Also HP just don't seem to know how to put a laptop together and have it last much more than a year :stuck_out_tongue:

Bought a HP posted here few years ago for £250 and I can't fault it. Amount of times I dropped it and it's still going strong. So I'm really sorry that I have to bust your myth about HP.

The Pavilion series is normally for multimedia usage. Hence it also has the upgraded speakers. I have had a pavilion before and the viewing angle was very good and sound excellent. I am sure this will be similar.

Not bad. But I suspect the screen is a TN type. And the ssd is ridiculously small. If there was space for a full sized HDD and an msata ssd it might be worth considering.

Just how bad is the omen screen meant to be ? I know it's a "gaming" laptop but doesn't it have a IPS at least ? I'm disappointed it's all plastic :disappointed:

Just had a look in JL and unfortunately the screen wasn't too impressive . Hp envy x360 looked pretty good out of the sub 1k but also £930 for the 15.6"

Be careful will some of the Dell screens. I was looking at the 13.3" Inspiron 5000 series convertible in PC World, and the full HD IPS screen is pretty bad (as per reviews). Move off centre and the screen has a shimmering, almost glittery effect.

Not sure if the Lenovo Ideapad 510 is still on offer, but that has a decent 15.6" full HD IPS screen and fairly fast i3 processor for £350.

The dell pc I sent back was Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series Laptop, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon R7, 15.6",
Screen rubbish, mousepad loose, laggy

So hows the screen? Are the colours good or is it washed out? Are the blacks black or grey? Every laptop I've looked at so far has awful screens but one but that one had poorer specs.

This one is very light at under 1.5kg

It actually says 'in-plane switching' so his comment about it being TN was just plain conjecture and totally wrong.

Yeah I can see why. I have no intention of gaming but want something more for multi tasking video/photo ect with the standard bases of SSD and FHD screen but its settling on a budget-spec ratio as well as not pointless buying stuff I'd never need.:neutral_face:

Review of the 500gb HD version below. Great specs on paper but doesnt really get a lot of love. On the other hand, you get a lot for the money. And then again, whoever thought those stripes across the wrist area was a good idea wants shooting.
