£30 off at the moment for anyone interested. Not cheap, but this does not come on offer very often, so £30 is better than nothing.

More to the point e-ink displays are specifically suited to book reading & do the job brilliantly. It's the only separate device I use every day. For everything else I use an iPad.

The Kindle Fire is just so *slow*. 28 seconds to launch Facebook, 24 seconds to open Candycrush.. bought it thinking it would be nicer to use than my iPhone.. just sits in a drawer. PS. This deal is a hot from me.

Need a good offer on oasis... Voyage doesn't seem worthwhile upgrade compared to paperwhite.

I was looking at the oasis , however it seems to be missing some of the upgrades the voyage has, I.e light sensor.

Mental that you can get a fire for £35 and Kindles cost so much more

LCD is a much more refined and proven technology. eInk displays are still developing and nowhere near as mass produced.

The screen on the £35 Kindle isn't that great; ours doesn't get used at all now.

Basic kindle ereader is about £50-60. I have a kindle fire, like it but I charge it up.every couple of days, I have a kindle basic ereader and the paper white, the paper white I use every night, its easier on the eyes, more compact and I've charged it once a month. It can sit on standby for an absolute age also.
For reading I don't think they are in the same ballpark personally.

Totally agree! These are five times the cost but no where near five times the tech or production price. Amazon is making a packet on these. Yes the fires are for different uses, and not all that fantastic, but £35 is amazing value.

no comparison,Fire has LCD screen and not suitable for longer reading as your eyes will bleed.
these have e-link and almost like real paper.no eye strain.
still anything more expensive than paper white doesn't make sense imo.

And a £10 voucher if you purchase on or before 18th April.
Paperwhite also reduced to £89.99; with a £5 voucher back on that one.
Does anyone know how long these Kindle discounts are on for?

The Voyage is never discounted. I know. I've been waiting for over a year & caved in earlier this year & got a discounted Paperwhite. Shame I didn't wait a few more months to get this. Can't win 'em all.... Heat. Definitely.

I really like my Kindle but I do not understand these expensive options, the battery on my paperwhite lasts for long enough and the screen is as good as I need it.
I bought the Kobo H2o for my wife which offers more versatility, this is the direction where Amazon need to improve the range. She hasn't used her Kindle since owning this.

I didn't know this, genuinely thank you for pointing that out. The main purpose of an upgrade from my PW1 was because I wanted the adaptive back light - I would've bought the Oasis assuming it had it...

Got both the Paperwhite and the Voyage. Both excellent. But and it is only a pretty small but - the Paperwhite looks better in low light. The Voyage looks a bit too bright and that distracts from the reading experience - in my oipinion. Would love an Oasis but can't justify the spend over the portability. I wanted a reader for home and for for work/travelling hence the two. I am sure the Oasis is up to fulfilling the role of being very portable but I need two readers. Had a Nook previously but hate to say the Kindle is better and quicker.

No I get your point, market forces and the tablet market for ereaders allow them to add on a premium as they are aimed at a different customer base. Its a point that has been brought up many a time. I was simply mentioning to would be purchasers that an ereader does it's job better than a tablet IMO, just I case they are looking for one.

Bought my Wife the Voyage after her using her Kindle 3G Keyboard for many many years.. son has paperwhite.. adn the Voyage just feels more quality. not sure its worth all of the extra price, but its certainly a higher quality product than the paperwhite.

It's lacking a few options , I compared the two the other week and was shocked at such a poor release,I would wait for v2. I have a kobo h20 at the moment , it's great as the text can go so small and it's totally water proof. In fact I even tried putting it at the bottom of a swimming pool and changing pages. Kobo also has sd cards so you can add as much memory as you want . The only reason I want a kobo is the simplicity of the Amazon store , having two disabled children when I do get chance to start a new book I don't want to be wating time adding them.

Think the basic kindle ereader, which is good, is around £50-60

The thing about eInk is that it is great for reading, but there is only a single supplier, and it is patent protected. This means the black & white eInk display is a lot more expensive than a full color LCD display. This is the main reason the Kindle is more expensive.
You can also read well on good tablet, for example the Kindle HDX, if you can turn the back light low enough. The HDX has a great resolution, but again it is a bit pricey.

Agreed. As I stated before Kindles do a brilliant job for reading (I'd argue the best in the market.) It's what they were designed for. If my iPad could do the same job without straining my eyes or making my arms ache I wouldn't have a kindle.

I love my Voyage, wish it had been this price when I got it a few months back
I'm still not sure why you'd get this and not the updated Paperwhite? Same resolution (so same screen), but much cheaper.

They aren't buttons, they're haptic sensors. I went for the Voyage specifically for them (from a K3 Keyboard), as I didn't want to have to keep moving my digits to the screen to turn the page, but there's nothing there to "feel" to know your thumb's in the right place - until after you've pressed the button and the haptics react. Obviously this problem only manifests in the dark, but a significant reason I picked one up was so I could switch off my lamp at night and let my partner sleep while I continue to read until my eyes can't stay open anymore.
Between physical buttons and these, the physicals are really, obviously preferable (to me, at least) - but the haptics are better than nothing.
Not trying to put you off - it's a lovely device, and this is a hot price, but the "buttons" are not very buttony!

Thanks. Looks like ads on Kindles is mostly a U.S thing.
Picked up a Voyage, in store, earlier today. At £140 with a £10 voucher thrown in I really don't think this price can be bettered.
This is my first Kindle. I had been considering the Oasis but the price difference of £130 is simply too great to justify.

Got 2 voyages for £71 each before Christmas on Amazon warehouse, brand new and 1 came with the premium charger as well. I'd say the glass screen is a great upgrade from the soft paperwhite screen.

Hi - yep I did. It is hard to explain in words what I mean by the brightness being a distraction. I think I would be better off saying the contrast isn't as good, as in the dark of the text doesn't stand out as well as on the Paperwhite. In daylight though I prefer the Voyage. Horses for courses and all that but I would say I wouldn't have got a Voyage having used one now - I would have gone for another Paperwhite considering the price difference - it just isn't worth the small difference. Even with the page turning buttons - they are more of a gimmick than of any use really.
