Anyone pick one up from Argos where the item was sellotaped up? The box looked used.
Argos said this was to stop the sleeve falling off, I didn't believe a word and got them to write down the condition of the box in case there was anything missed or was used.

Argos need to be investigated for selling used goods as new.

P.S. There's a free £10 giftcard off a £100 spend from today, so that brings this down to £133 overall, just remember to give them grief for selling you a used item if the box is re-taped up

Well, you don't turn it on, but it's on a schedule right? So it's meant to be on in evening but you're not going home, so you turn it off remotely.

I wouldn't put the heating on if I was going out for the evening... handy if you forget I suppose but I can't say i have done in the 2 years or so I've had a hive

I have one of these. It's just a snazzy thermostat and has no positive effect whatsoever on the cos of bills.

maybe a daft question here, but can you purchase 2 of these and have a thermostat in 2 'zones' of the house? or do you need a special boiler for that?

Send a much better system, and the fact it is Wi-Fi enabled sold it for me. Don't need any more boxes attached to my router / cluttering up the sideboard.

I realised yesterday that I don't actually use the thermostat on the wall. It's permanently set to about 28 degrees, and the pins on the timer on the boiler simply come on at about 7pm when I get in from work, and go off at about 11pm. If I want an extra hour, I just knock the pins in from 11-12 to leave the heating on. I tested it yesterday and the thermostat does work fine (I turned the heating on at the boiler, set the thermostat to as low as it would go, and the radiators didn't get hotter. Turned it back up, and they kicked in).

Am I missing something here? Is that a super inefficient way to control heating? Or is it actually the cheapest way to do it?

Not many boilers even support it, instead using their own implementation.,.... and it is arguable that leaving the system constantly on supplying the right temp water is more energy efficient and reduce wear, in fact it may even increase wear on the pump as it's always on

Yes it does ? I didn't call it some new technology. By enabling your thermostat to change the temperature of the water flowing through radiators, it allows you to reach the optimum radiator temperature. The colder the water returns back to your boiler, the more efficient your combi boiler becomes and it also stops your boiler being turned on and off constantly which reduces wear.

You need to work out if your room stat connection is expecting a live 230v switch, if so you can use Live as common and Heating On (4), Otherwise for volt free switch don't use Live or you will cause irreperable damage, instead you should be able to use Heating off and Heating On ( 2 and 4)

If unsure, get someone who knows what they're doing, or get the single channel which is meant for Combi

Just reading through the instructions for fitting to the boiler. The pins seem different in the hot water kit. Do I just forget about the hot water pins? There's a pin labelled "common" on the non-water kit that isn't there in the hot water kit, does that matter?

The only thermostats worth having are Nest 3rd gen and Tado because they use something called opentherm that allows them to change your heating temp and not just turn your boiler on and off, saving more money. So they work like weather compensating thermostats but with online control.

Ok cool, thanks for the tips, I was thinking I needed to spend a grand on a new boiler to get any benefits like nest/hive.

The nest thermostat gets wired in to the wall, where your old thermostat is, and then again at the boiler, but the hive comes with 3 things- the bit you plug into the router, the battery powered remote/thermostat (that I guess most people wall mount), and a third bit that wires into the boiler to perform the actions you set. So why does Hive have 3 bits and Nest only 2? Does the Nest thermostat just use wifi and therefore doesn't need the first device I mentioned?

don't need to disconnect clock.. just set it to on.
wire the rf receiver into boiler, using current live and Neutral, then another cable between stat terminals.

I have a boiler that has one of those mechanical dials on it where you slide in the pins in and out, and I think it's a combi because I don't have a reservoir of water in the attic etc.

Can I use a smart thermostat with that type of boiler? There is a thermostat on the wall in the house, but it's old and only has 2 wires behind it (I think I took it off once, but could never really get an answer as to wether I can use one of these), any help would be good!!

Agree but the lack of Homekit integration bothers me. As above, workarounds with IFFTT are flaky at best. I'm moving and have decided to leave mine where it is (+12 TRV's). Netamo (supports Homekit) are releasing zoning TRV's soon and will likely go with that in the new house.

A BG gas engineer visited my house because I have a boiler maintenance agreement with them and whilst there he offered me Hive supplied and fitted for £149. They can offer you Hive at the discounted price only whilst in your house. They'll either leave you a written quote for you to call BG later and get it at the reduced price or they can install it there and then with payment made over the phone directly to BG. I've got a system boiler so mine also controls my hot water.

I got hive when I bought my boiler over 2 years ago. It doesnt work now. Im no longer a British gas customer. Do you have to pay a monthly subscription for it to still be active?

If you use any British Gas service you can get it supplied and installed for £149.99 inclusive. Just ask any of their engineers when they are in your home to give you a quote. I get my gas and electricity from Eon and my service agreement with BG and I got HIVE fitted for £149.99.

Op, How do you watch and get price notification for an item on argos?

Has society made us that lazy that you cant simply use the timer on your thermostat and the thermostatic valves on individual radiators throughout your house to control your heating as and when you desire?

Love the hive, in particular being able to turn off heating & hot water when you go on holiday. It has built in frost protection mode which kicks in if needed, and th n day before you cone home switch it all back on. App for your phone & tablets etc, so you can check temp while out & turn up if needed etc. Hot water also good. We now have a hive lightbulb which is great in darker months. Will be investing in couple more of those too.

Are these worth having? And which is better, hive or nest?

Had this since February, couldn't praise it enough until 15/03/17 when hive changed the online dashboard and ruined the experience overnight.

I literally just used it to dim the hue lights in my living room from my Android Wear.

With Netatmo I used it for a 2Hour heating boost on those extra cold days. And it turned the Thermostat off this week because I have it set to do that when outside temp reaches 16c

It can be unreliable if your phone tries to save energy by restricting background data because it needs internet to work.

Have you actually used IFTTT? I see lots of praise for it, but once I actually tried to use it, I found it totally unreliable. Not sure if its just me.

Hive also works with IFTTT and Amazon Echo. Hive also accepts commands by text, so I've used Macrodroid app to create some widgets on my phone screen so I can send any heating or water command with a single button press.

We use a Netatmo Thermostat, which also works with Alexa

Amazon have price matched, but only the heating+water. Can you buy the heating+water kit but not bother with water? Ours is a combi boiler so wouldn't need the hit water part, but the kit is actually cheaper on Amazon.
