Does anyone own both the Amazon Echo AND the Google Home? I wonder what it would be like to live the both ecosystems in the same environment. Any conflicts?
Wilzia to travisbickle

I have an Echo Dot and its rubbish, returning it this evening. It doesnt respond very well and its always off target even at close proximity.
varsas to travisbickle
27 Apr 17 #18
There shouldn't be any conflicts since the key words are different.

If you have music tied to either Amazon or Google then you may want to choose based on that since you can't use the other's music service.

Amazon allows you to play your uploaded music easily. Google currently requires you to put it into a playlist first and then use the playlist.

If you have Amazon prime then you have access to lots of music, this is separate to their Amazon music subscription service.

I only have two echo dots at the mo and they work well. The issues with listening correctly generally only occurs when there is other loud noise around.

From reviews the echo has more support for smart home devices at the moment.
abraver to travisbickle
27 Apr 17 1 #35
I've got both. Work seamless, no conflicts at all. You can switch something on by Alexa and switch off by GH. Alexa appears as more human, (a bit of a soul? ) while GH is like a robot - pure computer.
Alexa sometimes can't recognize words, however GH even if understood words - can't find the answer.

For now I prefer Alexa (especially dots) but believe that GH will get to the competitor level some point.

I have 2 Amazon Echos, a dot and a full sized one, I have also had a google home for about 8 months having imported one from the USA.
The both have their plus points and bad points .
Firstly the google home can not play music via Bluetooth from your phone, Echo can.
Google home can change the colour of my hue lights, echo can not. ( echo can change brightness)
I find it easier to say Alexa than Ok Google. And I sometimes find myself saying the wrong key word to the wrong device.
Google home has more answers than echo.
Apart from that they do basically the same thing. Both of then sound too base heavy to be used as a quality Bluetooth speaker ( google home has no Bluetooth) . The echo dot sounds very tinny but does have a 3.5 Mum output jack to connect to an amplifier etc and the output sound is excellent.
I have tried to get them to talk to each other without success and they both very polite about each other's products.

Terms of code, point 2 states is for home delivery, not c+c although creepyg below states works on pay and collect

1. Only one discount can be applied per transaction.
2. Discount codes can only be used on orders for home delivery. Reserve & Collect orders are excluded from this offer.
3. Using the codes listed above you can use the discount in the basket at currys.co.uk, excluding delivery charges, Knowhow services, and extended warranties.
4. Currys.co.uk reserve the right to end this promotion prior to the advertised end date without notice

May only be certain stores? Reckon it's those that don't actually have the item readily in stock, so delivery is still required to the store. It was only an option for one of three stores local to my work. Luckily it was the closest!!

28 Apr 17 #42
That's a shame. I have an echo and multiple echo dots and all respond perfectly.
alweekes
28 Apr 17 #43
Bought this yesterday and it's highly likely I'll return or next week. Compared to my Echo I'm finding it really frustrating, less smart device, more dumb device. It can't play music from my personal Google play library, or cast it, yet I can cast the same music to the device from the phone. Many Tunein radio stations won't play (e.g. radio paradise) and it has very limited ecosystem support (no Logitech harmony in UK). I'm a massive Google fan, but this device sucks for me, even multi account isn't available yet, bit having used it for an evening, I'll spend the money on more Dots. Chromecast support is it's only redeeming feature for me and that's just as easy to do from phone or tablet.
Kag25
28 Apr 17 #44
Maplin have £5 off a £40 spend and £10 off a £75 spend all weekend, I believe it's instantly redeemed. That means it matches the Curry's deal in Chromecast, unlike Curry's thought the discount is across the store not restricted to certain products. I've just reserved the google home online and will be collecting in my local store at 9am. I will then spend the next 24 hrs seeing if it's better than Alexa and if not will be buying my discounted dots before the offer finishes on Monday

The Google Home takes priority when listening and responding. If my phone hears the prompt then it shows "another device is responding" that device being the Google Home.
Themadcow
28 Apr 17 #48
Went for this over the Echo simply because I think Google will make a lot of integration improvements over the next year, and expect deeper integration with it's stock Android Apps. Not sure I'd have gone with it if I was an iPhone person though.

A lot of people will have access to money off vouchers through employer schemes, so I used my wife's 8% off instant vouchers and a bit of cashback (assuming it tracks) to bring the overall price down to around £110 delivered.
Mearcat655
28 Apr 17 #49
It doesn't work though. I've just tried it. Alexa says it doesn't work. Google home change the colour immediately
ryan2801
28 Apr 17 #50
Shame that it doesn't have Bluetooth for connecting to better sounding Bluetooth speakers. I'll stick with Alexa until that changes, if it does.
mean1979
28 Apr 17 #51
Granted the long term functionality sounds positive, but until Google home can do something as simple as make a reminder (for some reason it can't do it at present), it's kind of pointless.
TrebleR
28 Apr 17 #52
Hi I had both. I got the Home from America. I had to set it up up with American settings. I ended up selling it as it just wasn't listening to me. I'd be right next to it and it wouldn't respond, plus the annoying thing on top was both my phone and tablet would respond even though I wasn't asking them.

Alexa however is brilliant regarding hearing you. The dot I have is in the kitchen and can hear me from the top of the stairs, plus it's an excellent kitchen radio and timer, does the nest heating too. Obviously the search/questions are much better with Google home, and Nest control was better (Google own it after all). I may get this deal hoping as it's a UK version it will be better.
nemo786
28 Apr 17 #53

ryan2801
28 Apr 17 1 #54
Nor add an entry to Google calendar - yet Alexa can. Baffling.
D00nhamer
28 Apr 17 #55
Another baffling one is that it works with Nest, I can change the temperature or ask what it's set to, but I can't boost the hot water. Something fundamental and seemingly simple with their own brand stuff.

The Google Home is a much better in its voice assistant as its contextual but with it being newer there are less devices and services with native support for it than Alexa. So really it depends on if your looking for the now or the future.

So really it depends on two things
1) What smart devices do you have. if they aren't natively supported by Google Home right now Alexa may be better (although with IFTTT you can get many non supported devices to work)
2) If you are after looking for something that works ok now or your willing to wait for it to become full featured
Midnight.Tboy
28 Apr 17 1 #58
Tried the Google Home - sent it back. Opted to buy another 3 Echo dots for £130 instead.....much prefer using these, plus great value in comparison. OK the speakers are small and "tinny" but the big ones are far from the best in the world too if you're an audiophile, so pair with some good speakers if that fussed
alweekes
28 Apr 17 #59
Just returned mine too, I'm a huge Google fanboy whom Google probably knows more about than my wife, but the Home is a huge disappointment. Maybe in another year it will be ready, but by then Alexa will also be a year more advanced.
Going to buy another Dot, add a bluetooth speaker (have loads here) and it sounds as good and does more.
alweekes
28 Apr 17 #60
Echo has always been able to use scenes though, which are a good solution for setting colours or atmosphere in a room. I've not tried requesting a specific colour yet.
barryp1
28 Apr 17 #61
It works for me. You have to ensure your Alexa and Hue settings match.

I say Alexa make lights blue and they all change to blue or I say Alexa make xxxx red and xxxx is red. The software works and you are doing something wrong.
K1LLER_HORNET
28 Apr 17 #62
Good price, meh device. Severely hampered even when trying to use with Google's own products.

The software on these digital personal assistant's are a few years behind where they start to become useful.

Just think about how often you use Google Now. Aside from checking the weather and setting a reminder/alarm I never use it.

A shame really. Maybe in a couple of years.

Quite a bit of Echo versus Home fanboyism developing isn't there :-)

I went for the home because I've already got a chromecast audio linked system. If I had a sonos system probably would have gone for an echo as they seem to be getting into bed together.

Both the echo and the Home are pretty similar really though aren't they?
creepyg
2 May 17 #67
Hmmm.... Worked great until last night. Now the Home and Chromecast don't seem to want to 'talk' to each other, so no casting.

Both work fine independently, eg can cast to the Chromecast from tablet/phone, Home can cast other Chromecasts I have. But ask Home to cast to it and the Chromecast just sits on it's idle screen, while Home confirms it's playing.

Tried all the usual resets/reboots but no joy. If it isn't working when I get home from work I'll factory reset the Home.

Anyone else had a similar issue?

2 May 17 #68
Without the code it is now £129.01 and with the code £119.01 so it seems the website is charging 1p for the 'free Chromecast' ?
gt94sss2
2 May 17 #69
If you contact Curry's they should refund the 1p as its an error on their site. They advertise the Chromecast as 'free' but are not fully discounting it as they should in the bundle - and as such are in breach of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

I know its only a penny but its the principle (+ otherwise Argos would have been cheaper)

Right round 2 - second try with the Google Home lasted half a day, just find it truly pointless unless you have smart lights/heating - as it offers zero integration for calls/notifications - so constantly flipping from my mobile to Google Home, to me its like Google have limited the Home to make it standalone otherwise you could just use your phone, then i came across this article.

https://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/turn-a-spare-android-phone-into-a-google-home/
You need a mobile ideally with Google Assistant, but Google Now would suffice and a bluetooth paired speaker.
E voila total integration and now your phone is truly extended into your home.

I am trying it with my Samsung S8+ and Level speaker, the beauty here is the Level app allows me to tailor notifications (on/off/simple/detailed), so if i do not want all my notifications read out i can tweak.

If purchased online for home delivery, can you return it to Curry's if you decide you don't like the Google Home?

I have it here (unopened) and am having second thoughts over whether I wold find it useful..
hesproic
8 May 17 #72
Very tempted by this. I was looking for a Bluetooth speaker for the kitchen to play podcasts but this could do that and so much more. I already have a first generation Chromecast but another one would be useful too.

My only thought is that this is still a v1 device and it's sure to be replaced with something better in a few months time.

9 May 17 #73
I purchase another yesterday and got a second £30 voucher from customer services for the store problem of only supplying one chromecast, vs home delivery.

The manager said he was getting in touch with the promo team to get the deal fixed so can be put through on store tills and reserved in store.

I'll believe it when it happens, but at least he confirmed it is a genuine deal and not a glitch.

Having got 2 chomecasts delivered in the bundle and the 3 months free Google music this feels like a serious score!

Have integrated 2 chromecast audios which I already had and which have grouped up very well with the home for some whole house music. TP-link smart plug works flawlessly and lets me switch a socket on or off to control anything with any nickname you can set. "Hey Google, fan on" made me smile more than it should.

Google music allowing you to say play song that goes "I hear babies crying, I watch them grow" - kicks out Louise Armstrong - Wonderful World was interesting too as it must be searching lyrics.

Got a smart bulb arriving soon and hopefully they've coded it to respond to "let there be light"...

All in all, very pleased, even before fiddling with the chromecasts. Thank you OP for the spot.
