That depends what system you have. Some of the Onkyo all in one systems will not work on this. You may blow the speakers or damage this amp if it is one of those systems. Surprised at people just saying yes to you, to be honest.
Which system do you have?

I recently bought this. I was gonna get the 656 but HDCP 2.2 on all hdmi inputs on the denon swung it for me. If you're getting and av receiver for 4k look at this or the onkyo 676

Nah, the Yamaha (although great) only has 5 HDMI ports, 1 out and only 3 are HDCP 2.2. This Denon has 2 HDMI out ports and 8 in, all of which are HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0a compatible. Depends what you need I guess.

Are Denon products reliable? I have an Onkyo which has given up the ghost after only 3 years so reluctant to get another (even though sound was good). Yamaha, Denon or Pioneer (slightly worried about latter as now owned by Onkyo). One key factor always missing from reviews - reliability!

German website HiFiTest found that this puny receiver was only capable of 100W across 5 channels into 8 Ohms. This is simply not enough for any realistic home cinema and you would be better spending your money on a soundbar instead.
rev6 to Thoughtful

It got pretty damn loud in my tests, 3 channel. I think it's perfectly fine for 6 ohm or higher.

13 Apr 17#35
Which receiver would you recommend for around the same price or a little more?
The Pioneer VSX1131 is quite feature packed. Comparing with music though, I'd say the Denon is slightly too bright, and the Pioneer lacked dynamics and clarity for me, hard to explain what I heard. If I had to choose, it would be the Denon, as it supports Audyssey and all HDMI's are HDCP 2.2 compliant.
Nothing against Pioneer though for the price.

Yes but those were the days when amps were made to last and weighed a ton due to quality transformers, inductors and capacitors and no plastic. And these were just 2 channel stereo amps rated around 100w rms.

I've got one of these, drives me mad turning on the PS4 all the time when you turn the denon on, my old sony str-dn840 never did this and that was ARC. So much so I've had to turn off the HDMI device link in the ps4 settings...
A shame because I used to like to control it with my tv remote. Not sure why it has to send a signal to the ps4 to turn on when I'm not even selecting that input.

I need a new amp but I am not going to use atmos. I wonder whether I should go for this or if I'd be wasting money for a feature I will never use. I need connectivity and quality output. Don't need atmos nor all those inputs and two outputs.

I would never buy another pioneer even if I was paid to. My VSX 931 (I think that was the model number) was gutless, and the "smart features" died after a year (network controller lost its MAC address and couldn't be seen on the network)

cutthroat_jake
16 Apr 17#54
If your TV supports Dolby Vision you won't need this.
If not, I read that the update won't arrive until late 2017 or early 2018 (source).
MrDMan
16 Apr 17#55
You will if you want to pass everything through the denon i.e 4k bluray player. I know most come with 2 HDMI outs so you can get round the receiver not supporting DV but best that it does I think
jumpinoffthbed
16 Apr 17#56
i don't understand why people have everything going through the amp, why not just have your tv as the source? doesn't the tv pass on the full quality sound from a bluray player? I'd be grateful if someone could explain what I'm missing.
MrDMan
16 Apr 171#57
The tv will pass on most things but not Master HD audio and I doubt Atmos either. So you limit to 5.1 if you connect straight to the tv and then use ARC or optical to the receiver
rev6
16 Apr 17#58
As above. And most TV's don't have 8 HDMI inputs.
MrDMan
16 Apr 17#59
Indeed. However I always wonder why people need so many, sky, blue ray player, Xbox, PlayStation, Google chrome cast, Apple tv I can't think of many more things I could need to connect!

This is the first time I have purchased an AV receiver. Can anyone please recommend a decent 5.1 speaker set for £200ish?

not a big brand unfortunately, they're called omni audio and 200w each.. how do I know what they'll pair with?
IWANTBLUE
17 Apr 17#67
Not that bizarre when the amp is intended/designed to go between the source and the End output, be that TV /projector etc.. and that £1k Tv is the 'end output' so not "necessarily " expected to pass anything else on...
jumpinoffthbed
18 Apr 17#68
well they make soundbars to use with their tv's so that's not exactly true
IWANTBLUE
18 Apr 17#69
ut the soundbar can be in front of the TV connected by ARC surely? I'm not arguing with you.. just pointing out that one is an in-between product by design,(as well as outputting the sound obviously  the other is and END Output device, not sure why you want to argue that point really but hey .. up to you  Was only making the point , you dont have to agree with me :P

I've been considering purchasing this amp in the package deal that includes the Q Acoustic 3000 series 5.1 speaker setup for £869 Any thoughts on if this is a good beginners setup to pair with an LG OLED?
I was considering just purchasing it all separately starting with the Denon amp and 3010 fronts before upgrading the system with the sub woofer, center and rears... I've also spotted the 3050s now though and not sure if I would still need a sub. Then there's the neighbours to consider... Confused.

I'm thinking about the same package as you. I've found the denon 2300 with the 3050 package (just swaps out one pair of the 3010 with a pair of 3050) for £1150.

Yeah I saw that package with the 3050s as well, kinda feel like it could be a little over the top for a surround sound setup though lol
In terms of the sub, coming from TV speakers and taking my neighbours into consideration I'm wondering if I can do without... I wonder if I need a dedicated speaker for the bottom end on 5.1 or if the five will pick up the lows alone without the sub.

It acts as a hub for all your connections (e.g. Sky, Blu-ray, Chromecast, etc) and drives sound to your speakers (up to eight of them). It also provides smart technology so you can use your Spotify to play music through the speakers.

I don't understand this. I had a stereo 35w per channel Rotel amp 40 years ago that I used in a large hall. Hi, actually I wouldn't just give a simple yes on this answer - Best that the Rustybin posts what Onkyo speakers they have. If they're standard Hifi/AV type speakers with correct (standard) impedance yes, but if they're from an all-in-one system they may well have a completely different impedance and therefore not be suitable for connecting to a standard AV receiver, and only the original equipment.

I bought this on Black Friday last year and I just swapped my bi wired fronts over from my old Sony and they work fine (after going into the settings and telling it you want bi wired obv.).
Also this means you are restricted to 5.1 sound...
All in all it's a great amp, however I am having some trouble with DLNA and it seeing my other devices, and my computer seeing the amp over the network.
I am going to do a full reset on it, hopefully that will fix it, but from what I have read some others have had to have the network module replaced.

Possibly but not ideal, you need an amp with zonal HMDI, this is just a HDMI mirror.
With this amp you would get the TV picture in the other room but the sound would be coming out of the speakers in the main room, I suppose you could manually switch the speakers off in the main room and change the sound processing to 'passthrough' each time but this would also restrict viewing in the main room.

27 Apr 17#154
Ahh right , yeah passthrough I was looking for so amp could be in standby when watching TV in diff rooms(I know same Chanel )
Seems like it's not an option then

100W 5 channels driven at 8 ohm is an excellent result at this price. Unless you have a giant room or hard to drive speakers with low sensitivity, 100W is more than enough for most home cinema/audio use. Will be plenty loud without distortion. The THX recommendation is peak volumes up to 105dB for cinema - for speakers with 90dB sensitivity, that would equate to ~32W at 2m from speakers in a multiple speaker setup.

I couldn't fit this in the cabinet below my tv due to the size its a big old beast even bigger than my old Sony STR-DG820
So i went for the Marantz NR1607. Its Slimline dimensions make it perfect for placement and the sound i found better than the Denon. So for anyone wanting an Atmos AVR alternative to the massive denon the Marantz is very good. Its similar price and huge saving at the minute from Richersounds.

I know that it does not send audio down the HDMI zone 2, only video because I've tried that. It's all in the manual IIRC, you'd be better taking a look at that.

Lol of people here dont understand stuff, a 60watt amp can cost £1000's and a 150watt amp can cost £100, size of watts has nothing to do with quality, all these cheap amps are not even analogue, need to spend more to get that quality(my 20 yearold yamaha dspa1 blows all these amps out the water, just missing all the new digital stuff), so dont get stuck on thinking bigger wattage equal better amps.
Remember: watts is not better. More watts can be louder. If you have a 50 watt amplifier and all else being equal, an amp rated at 100 watts will be 3 decibals louder. 3db is barely audible.

I have a Denon and its a great amp but i have to agree with Daytrader- the Yamaha I had years and years ago definitely sounded better. Its unfortunate but I had to upgrade- having an old amp just isnt feasible nowadays in the digital/HDMI environment.
Incidentally £349 is a typical price for a 1 year old mid range Denon. I remember last year the 2200W was £350 around this time as well.

Yeh i am annoyed i am having to upgrade to get hdmi/atmos/4k and all the other stuff, my amp cost me like £1500 20 years ago, so i know my next £500 av amp aint going to sound as good, but i need all this new stuff, and i aint going to pay £3000+ to get the equivalent av amp to what i have now.

After I posted the original comment I decided to have yet another read of the manual.
On page 169 under RC Source Select there are two choices. Power On + Source (default) and Source Select Only.
I tried the second option and it worked.
Amazing what you can find in the early hours.

I have a VSX930 and apart from only having HDCP2.2 on 3 outputs rather than all the outputs the Pioneer has more features than this Denon, the Pioneer has true multizone on the 2 HDMI outputs, I can watch any combination of sources in my lounge and kitchen through the VSX930, the Pioneer also allows you to change the HDMI passthrough input whilst in standby via the remote on the fly, something useful the Denon doesn't do.
Looking to see how much it would cost for a Amp and speaker set should I wish to replace a Sony DavZ220 surround unit I have. Would the jump in sound quality be much noticeable ?
I'm already using Source Select Only (at least i'm pretty damn sure I am) and you still have to turn the Denon on if you want to switch from, for example, CBL/SAT to watching a blu-ray and having the sound coming from the TV rather than the speakers. Will have to check again tonight when I get home.

27 Apr 17#180
Does anyone know what this does with regard to HDMI handshaking and resolution ? For example if HDMI 1 is a 4K HDR TV and HDMI 2 is a 1080p projector will it downscale to the lowest common denominator or is it effectively 2 independent outputs that can run at entirely different resolutions ?
paulj48
27 Apr 17#181
no, otherwise it would cost a fortune to run
and as its actually supposed to be 7 channels X 150 watts then that would be 1050 watts.

I have the previous years VSX-924 as a RS warranty replacement to a borked Yamaha RX-V675 and pleasantly surprised by its sonics. After owning a variety of manufacturers receivers over the years including Denon, Yamaha, Sony, Marantz, and Sherwood I find matched with my Mission speakers it to be the most articulate with music.
I do still have 3 years left in its extended warranty and have no desire to want to change from it, and when I do I will consider Pioneer again. Only criticisms I have is with the rather confusing menu system, not the easiest receiver to set up to get the most out of, and Pioneer's lack of supporting firmware updates. Build quality, high end Sabre DAC, sound quality and a surprisingly low running temperature make it one of, if not the best receiver I have owned over the years.

Why is the volume quite low? In my old receiver, the volume is very high even in turn the volume knob only half.
I noticed this too compared to my old Denon 1909! I tried upping the source increase (not volume) to no avail. Same speakers etc. Didn't find a solution so interested if anyone has. Latest firmware is installed too.

Nothing against Pioneer though for the price.
Yes but those were the days when amps were made to last and weighed a ton due to quality transformers, inductors and capacitors and no plastic. And these were just 2 channel stereo amps rated around 100w rms.
A shame because I used to like to control it with my tv remote. Not sure why it has to send a signal to the ps4 to turn on when I'm not even selecting that input.
The yamahas have also been marked down
If not, I read that the update won't arrive until late 2017 or early 2018 (source).

I'm not arguing with you.. just pointing out that one is an in-between product by design,(as well as outputting the sound obviously  the other is and END Output device, not sure why you want to argue that point really but hey .. up to you  Was only making the point , you dont have to agree with me :P
So inspired by this post I ended up upgrading most of my AV system
No issues, great receiver, brilliant for Spotify with 'Spotify Connect' and excellent mobile app to control it from (in addition to traditional remote).
Excellent Price.

Save £250. should be £549.
I was considering just purchasing it all separately starting with the Denon amp and 3010 fronts before upgrading the system with the sub woofer, center and rears... I've also spotted the 3050s now though and not sure if I would still need a sub. Then there's the neighbours to consider... Confused.
Should finish my setup nicely
Errrr is it bi-wireable as that is how my speakers are and I chucked the bridge so that is how they will stay. And and does it take ye olde fashioned connectors for my CD player. People still use cd players right?
(The PM45 was an amplifier).
EDIT Seems my set up is bi amped / bi wired. Can these doobreys deal with that?
I do have one very odd issue though..the Denon turns off automatically whenever I play Diablo III on my PS4 for more than half an hour.. :s .. this is odd because it never happens outside of D3 even when I turn up the volume to a much higher level.
does anyone know if there independent still or owned by another company
Not sure whether to go for that or to buy them separately. Buying separate costs £1277 in total.
I think you will still need a subwoofer but heard the Q acoustics 3070S isn't the best can anybody confirm?
get speakers that attach to the ceiling, a lot better

In terms of the sub, coming from TV speakers and taking my neighbours into consideration I'm wondering if I can do without... I wonder if I need a dedicated speaker for the bottom end on 5.1 or if the five will pick up the lows alone without the sub.
Basically combine it with a decent TV and a set of speakers (see some recommendations in the comments) for a home cinema.
The only grizzle is that the previous Yamaha receiver could be used to switch between sources without turning on the receiver, this Denon switches automatically switches on when a changing sources. I don't think this can be stopped.
Excellent sound, though.
Heat added.
Also this means you are restricted to 5.1 sound...
http://manuals.denon.com/AVRX2300W/EU/EN/WBSPSYtweharpi.php
All in all it's a great amp, however I am having some trouble with DLNA and it seeing my other devices, and my computer seeing the amp over the network.
I am going to do a full reset on it, hopefully that will fix it, but from what I have read some others have had to have the network module replaced.
With this amp you would get the TV picture in the other room but the sound would be coming out of the speakers in the main room, I suppose you could manually switch the speakers off in the main room and change the sound processing to 'passthrough' each time but this would also restrict viewing in the main room.
Seems like it's not an option then
