A 10% discount is pretty crap.
But this isn't even a 10% discount.
This is "Give us a big sum of money and we'll give you a tiny bribe for you to come back and give us another load of your money! Oh and by the way it's valid for less than a month so many of you won't even spend it!"
This is the equivalent of an expensive restaurant offering "Buy a meal for 4 and we'll give you a free can of Coke... next time you come back... within the next three weeks..."
Completely ice cold.

Is it also available on buying gift cards?

No unfortunately. They got that one covered as you could keep repeating this until you ended with a gift card that had more money on it than you had actually spent getting it i.e money for free !
Nice idea though.

So they still do that crappy thing? If you spend over £100 and get a £10 voucher, its two £5 vouchers which have an expiry date a month after each other?

This is a good deal, supposedly, but I will never, ever, ever use Argos again after being royally **** over and messed about for 4 months last year. I purchased a SP4 at the time, as part of a promotion. The order went through, the money was taken, it said it was in stock, and I was to receive the voucher. Problems started there. I ordered for delivery. After the scheduled delivery date passed, they said the item was out of stock. They still had my money, I asked for a refund, but they said it was in stock for collection at a certain store. I went to collect, told it was out of stock. After paying transport costs, I contacted support again. I was promised a call back, of course, that was never received. They now told me that the item was never in stock. I asked when it would be back, they said in the next week, so I rearranged for delivery. I won't drag this on any longer than necessary. The same thing happened about 4 more times. They were utterly useless throughout, but the final straw was when I contacted support one more time and was told that the item was never going to be back in stock and had been discontinued. This was obviously untrue. A few more shambolic mishaps along the way, but I eventually received the item. The voucher, which they said they would post, never arrived. I haven't even bothered following it up because the ordeal that would follow isn't worth it.
I'd almost excuse the absolute ineptitude if their customer service were in any way polite or helpful. I work in customer service myself and with every encounter I was dumbfounded as to how these people were hired for the jobs they were doing. Beyond being clueless and unhelpful they were CONSISTENTLY apathetic and UTTERLY rude. I can't recall exactly what was said at one point, but it was along the lines of, after I was told she was going to hang up: "It was up to you to buy it with Argos so it's your own fault". I won't make that mistake again.
EDIT: Just want to say, the actual people on the floor. The in-store staff, working their **** off on minimum wage are genuinely decent, hard working people. They are the only reason to shop with Argos. I feel sorry that they are represented by utterly useless fools who couldn't give a ****.
