Yes, well as long as you have the storage space.
When these tablets are connected to your Prime membership it unlocks a feature called On Deck, which downloads a few films & programmes that you might be interested in too. Its handy as it means that there is usually something to watch when out of a WifI area.
from Amazon:
"Videos downloaded by On Deck are stored on your device or SD card depending on your storage setting. On Deck downloads in a special shadow mode, using storage only when it's available, and won't impact performance. When you download apps, videos, music, books, and other content, On Deck automatically makes room – there’s no hassle of needing to clear out the space yourself. On Deck will never block you from using your storage the way that you want."
unfortunately the On Deck feature on my Fire Tablet insist on sending me Adam Sandler movies regardless of how i set my preferences.

I used this method, very simple, just grabbed the very latest apk's from apkmirror.
At £35, these are frankly ridiculous value for money.

I bought one last week and thought I'd add a few comments in response to some of the questions. This is for the kids and they have an ipad mini 2 already. I bought this as they eventually crack the ipad mini screens, so we thought at this price, we'd give it a shot to save some money on the continous replacements now that the ipad mini 2 isn't in the apple stores anymore and we're not splurging on the ipad mini 4 for the kids.
Firstly, yes you can get your tube, but it's a blue icon so may have some subtle differences. To be fair, I can't spot them and my kids can play all the things they can on the ipad mini. No, you cant add google play, well at least not without a workaround and I can't be bothered with the faff. That means some of the apps you might want can be a little difficult to get without a workaround.
They are a little slower than the ipad but as it's for the kids, they don't care. It does the job I bought it to do. I can't say much about the adverts as I paid the £10 to take them off. It's not an ipad but it's £35. Pretty pleased so far but time will tell on how good the battery is and most importantly, how robust the screen will be (I did buy a cover for it).

I managed to get one of these in the Black Friday sale for £29.99 for the 8gb and £39.99 for the 16gb. I would've paid more so this is still a great bargain! Excellent bit of kit. Worth paying the extra for more storage IMO.

Got one for Xmas for 12 year old. Disabled the amazon stuff though she still got some advertisements. She love it but after 3 weeks the charge stopped working issue with the slot the charger goes into, lots of chatter on line re this happening tried via Tescos where it had been purchased but they had stopped selling them ....( it wad the 16 GB with cover and extra storage disk) they offered a refund but as she adored it thought I would contact Amazon directly re the 2 year guarantee . after a bit of being fobbed off as I hadn't brought from amazon direct they did agreed to replace, however what they didn't mention is under the 2 year guarantee they will send you a refurbished tablet not a new one! Pretty disgusted ... and about 4 weeks later the screen shattered on the refurb.... cheap but you get what you pay for and Amazon are a pretty dodgy outfit.

Put Stock lollipop pop on it which is easy to do if you've got a pc, just follow a video on YouTube, and the thing flies. Battery life is really good about 8hours screen on time. It's a decent little tablet for £35, runs games like subway surfers perfectly.

Is this better than the original nexus 7?

10 Apr 17#56
No. If you mean software wise, then it's a choice between stock Android (with the easy option of installing a custom built one) or being tied to Amazon. Whether you can install a custom version of Android on the Fire depends on the version of Fire OS installed already.
If you mean hardware, then definitely 'no'. I have a Nexus 7 (2012) and was going to buy one of these until I saw the spec. The screen res on this Fire tablet is lower than the the Nexus. I've just replaced the ROM on my rooted Nexus and it runs Android 6 perfectly, with no lag.

Not wishing to poo-poo the OP's deal, but I really don't see the appeal in these. At £35, it's worth a punt if you can root it and dump the Amazon-centric crap - however, 1024x600 is a crappy resolution for surfing the net. Still, I suppose anything higher will expose the weakness of the 1GB RAM.

9 Apr 17#43
It's not fantastic for reading books. It's a great value multimedia tablet, but it's not a good e-reader. You want an e-Ink based screen, like the Kindle family and Kobo family have. They are rubbish for multimedia content but are perfect for reading books.

If you have your own source for ebooks then just wack "Moon+ Reader" on there and away you go.
tarantulas to DEVMAX
10 Apr 171#47
That's my main use for the fire7 - indoor reading of epub and mobi files with Moon+Reader. Brightness turned down to lowest, then brightness overlay in moon turned down to -33 and I get 12-16 hours of reading from a full charge. Not much less than most e-ink readers, and I don't have to put up with the horrendous refresh rate of eink or the lack of layout and font customisations on typical ereaders.
The only time I'll use an eink device is if I'm reading outdoors, as that is where they excel.
Yes, but not significantly so - the eMMC is much faster than the hynix flash on the N7, but everything else is around the same, save for the screen where the N7 has it beat.

Thinking of getting a few of these for the kids' birthdays... apart from the obvious benefit of the 2 year guarantee on the Kids version is there any real benefit to paying another £35?
I figure a robust case can be bought for £10ish but not sure how much use they'll get out of the 'fire for kids'.

I had the same thought and bought the Argos deal instead. I found similar cases on eBay for around £7 (and some had the built in stand which the Amazon one doesn't). I have Amazon Prime so I can get the fire for kids at a rate of £2/month. Taken all this into account, it seemed better to just buy the tablet at this silly price!
Also if you're not sure if the kids would like 'fire for kids' then you could just subscribe for a month and cancel at any point if you decide against it. As it's a pay monthly thing I'm presuming you can cancel and restart whenever you fancy. (Haven't tested this out yet, as the tablet is a birthday present for late May.)

I bought one of these a while back after 9 months the battery was draining ridiculously quickly. Got in touch with amazon and no quibble they sent a replacement. I was on the online chat and lost 20% while chatting. 4 months on replacement is poor battery as well. You can be sat at home doing nothing with it and it can lose 20-30% in 2-3 hours. I charge it once to twice a day. If you go out turn the wifi off else is drains quick as well. I listen to music, stream and read which is is great for. Camera is rubbish. You can expand memory with an sd card. Next time I am getting a more expensive bigger hd one its camera looks better too.

Possibly - if they come with v 5.3.2.0 or earlier of FireOS then they can be rooted and run CM12 or Fire Nexus, the former of which is no longer getting updates. If it comes with v 5.3.2.1 or later then there is no root available atm.
I've bought a few of them from argos and they tend to be older version of firmware - especially if you get it from a store that doesn't sell many & they just have them sitting in stock for a while.
