Bought this last time around. The xbox controller works on the first race, then the steering fails to work after that. and requires exiting the game and restarting. Not sure why. And after trying this whole pc gaming thing, I should've bought an xbox/ps as they require config and setup and don't always work, still, I have a big steam library collecting virtual dust!

It just stops working? Have you any other controllers plugged in, joystick, gamepad or anything? Have you tried setting the Xbox controller as preferred device in windows?

yep, I've had trouble getting a controller to work with a fair few pc games. most annoying are older GTAs.

Only thing else plugged in would be a keyboard. The logitech wheel was plugged in tbh, but it wasn't powered on at the mains - maybe that was it? I'll remove and retry... thanks

Yes remove that and try again. You can open devices and printers in control panel and just check the controller is working by right clicking the Xbox controller and hitting properties the advanced I think, something like that, then you can check all the inputs are being recognised by windows. Also changing to a different USB ports can sometimes be a fix.

The older GTA games were designed with older Direct Input controllers in mind. Install the following 2 mods to GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas; 1/2.
With these installed on a fresh install of the legacy 3D GTA games on PC, you'll be able to play at high frame rates with far fewer bugs and gain full Xinput support for your Xbox controller (complete with proper xbox button prompts in tutorials etc).

Heat added for the nice price for what is a fun game even though it's unfortunately been consolised relative to earlier games in the series.
