If they 6k miles is spread across the year, then your 16ish miles a day, let's presume you are going to and from work, so less than 8 miles a trip in your decent diesel car isn't going to be too healthy, plus you'd be much cheaper purchasing a petrol car in the first place. i doubt you'd be seeing 65mpg (to give 500 quid) from it either. Then you'll likely have GFR valve issues, possibly ad blue to worry about etc. Modern diesels are horribly complex things.

If you only do 6k a year, then it's petrol all the way money wise, but a leaf at 200 quid a month is a huge step forward, and isn't all about saving money.

6000 miles ? Is it worth the hassle. A decent diesel car will do 6000 miles for £500 of diesel, that's just over £40 a month. Also the electric is not free anyway, so the true saving is very little.

Diesel car would have to be free for that to be a comparison. Chances of getting a new 'decent' diesel car and running it for an overall lower TCO seem low.

Also, see the comments where people have chargers are available at workplace, in this case vast majority of Electricity would be free.

I bet your excited, coolest car in the car park ..... Datsun plug in electric......
20,000 miles per annum, god that's some charging up!
I've done it, you spend more time waiting for it to charge than driving it, then you realise your charger at home is not quick enough, so you get cards and use rapid chargers on motorway etc. £6 a charge!
I could go on for ever, argue now, but 3 months into it you will agree with me.

I have had my leaf almost 2 years. I've gone 6k over The 8k miles per year. There is one way to show what i have thought of my first time with the leaf. What is my next Car?

I have just ordered another Nissan Leaf.

If you are expecting to be accommodating in 1 way or another for owning an electric I think it helps. For example, u can't blaze up and down motorways at 80mpg and expect 155 miles. Charging at home has never been a problem for me. I work normal office hours and just put it on charge when I get home and it's charged in the morning. If u requireme multiple charges during the day I could imagine it causing a bit of an anxiety wondering if it will charge enough. But that's not been my situation, I don't often do over 70-80 miles in a day.

if you have any queries just let me know. But it's been a great car.

You're paying £10,000 then? I just don't like the risk of being stuck with a car payment should circumstances change. Would rather just pay for a car I can afford upfront.

I really want this to be batter value for me over my existing diesel (2.2 Civic, £15k miles p/a), but my (possibly terrible) calculations result in this being more expensive. I understand it's a new car, and cool tech, and environmentally better, but I don't think I can justify the extra expense.

9 Mar 17 1 #10
I really want to go electric but I'm not sure if it's real value for money in my situation so I would appreciate some help.

We run 2 cars so we can get rid of one and replace it with this. Probably spend about £60 a month on petrol per car, and when I factor in reduced car tax (not exactly sure how much less this will be), no MOT for 2 years, I'm roughly estimating spending £2k per petrol car compared to about £5k for this. Depreciation on existing cars would probably add £1k a year. Difference about £2k maybe.

I appreciate this is a brand new car with all mod cons etc, so I'm really tempted.

The deal isn't available on website you have to call Nissan Birmingham Central , I increased mine to 10k miles I think it's about £15 a month extra, even if you go over the mileage I think it's something like £100-150 extra cost are the end of 2 years for every 1k miles, can't remember what the exact figure was but I'm sure it wasn't much. The benefit with this was that you only pay a £200 deposit. However if your'e getting metallic paint, parking sensors( even though you have 360 degrees cameras) extra mileage , gap insurance and other extras it can go up to £270 a month but that depends on your own preference ( the car is the Tekna model which is already fully loaded) they also encourage you to return it at the end as because of the depreciation it isn't worth it and they want you to get the new model after 24 months.
I felt it benefitted me as I spend £150-200 a month on diesel.
Daftasabrush
9 Mar 17 #13
What do you mean "diesel car would have to be free for that comparison"
You would use £500 in deisel over a year for 6000 miles, and the car would have to be free?
Sorry, you expect to run a brand new car and do 6000 miles, then just pay £500 to cover the diesel cost!

10 Mar 17 1 #35
10 amp is for the 'Granny Charger'. A three pin plug you use for occasional use (Like when you vist your granny, hence the name). Most of the time you will use a 3.3 kw/h or 6.6 kw/h (Depends on if you buy the 6.6kw/h option) J1772 lead at work or at home with a dedicated unit. It would fully charge in about 4-9 hours, but you never go to 0% in reality.

I owned one for 2 years and it was a doddle. I regularly travelled 150 miles and just used the rapid chargers to complete the journey. Went on holiday from The Midlands to Cornwall twice with no drama or range anxiety. If you are really worried you can probably hire a car for a day with the petrol savings.

Test drive one for a week and then see what you think. Nothing to lose and you will probably save a bit of petrol money while trying it.

UPDATE
--------
Forgot to mention servicing is £99 a year (No oil, no gaskets, no gearbox). I used to pay £400+ on my old car.
A taxi firm has done about 130,000 and the battery has lost less than 10% degradation. There were fears about battery life about 5 years ago, but the experience has been much better in that time. Nissan have replaced 1 battery in 5 years due to degradation and faults.

2 minutes at Shell and I can do 800  I really genuinly can't see the point in electric cars yet. Sure you might be able to get some free electricity (your employer pays - see how long that lasts when everyone in the car park is topping up). But you then have to spend 30 minutes waiting to get a little further on the airport run. It's not like they are better for the enviroment either, the electricity still has to come from somewhere and the manufaturing of the batteries is just nasty.

For those thinking of doing 20k miles a year surely you are going to be in a situation where if it ain't being driven its being charged? Batteries are going be knackered in no time.

Have a leaf now on a four day test. It charges up around 10 miles range an hour from a home plug. Charged it to 85 miles range and did a 64 mile journey this week. Topography is important with these. Obviously, if you go up lots of hills and not down as many, range decreases. As it does with climate control usage .Putting it in B mode will let it regenerate the battery on slow down or down hills which makes you read the road better in front of you. I made it to my destination with - - - on the dash. 0 left. It still drives no issues. Apparently, it will still do 20 mph for a while when it hits 0. I'm impressed by the acceleration and top end is 100, but obviously saps charge. It's a shame you can't charge for free using the ecotricity card any more, but there are other ways to charge for free(Nissan dealer). I'm going in tomorrow to look at a deal on 10k per annum. £100 a month saving on fuel (if charged for free)can go towards the £199 or maybe a little more with 10k. Really tempted! Try the 4 day trial and see if it fits your lifestyle! LEAF

Yes I get that about the charger, but you need to get one installed. My main issue, even though I'd really like one of these, is that we have a lot of family all around 100 miles away. Now obviously the car could make it there (just), but if those we are visiting don't have a fast charger (which they won't) then you have to use the granny lead, so would need to stay there at least 10 hours charging
Someone needs to invent a plug in 20 amp+ charger, maybe one that runs off two separate rings on the main? ie one off the downstairs circuit and one off the upstairs one?!
Daftasabrush

10 Mar 17 #44
It is possible to do this if you use rapid chargers en-route. I used to commute 230 miles to Cambridge and back every week for 3 months without destination charging. Not for everyone, but I saved a ton of cash.

I really like your idea of adding 13 amp plugs together to make a 3-6 kw/h supply. That would be very handy.

Not sure if Nissan increased range to 155, I did the 7 days test drive 2 years ago and I remember the advertised range was 120?

The Nissan guy that called me to arrange the test drive was very upfront and told me please do keep in mind real world range is around 80miles, without me even asking!

So not sure where the 155miles is coming from
MaximusRo
11 Mar 17 #49
Seems like 30 miles commute is not well within range as according to your own numbers you only get 50-60 miles range in the winter, which will mean half a year in the UK?
MaximusRo
11 Mar 17 #50
I did the 7 days test drive, have to say B mode only adds 2 or 3 miles to the range, it is insignificant. I think the regenerative energy technology it bull, and the money spent on those parts could be better used somewhere else or to make the cars cheaper.
They probably also add to weight and complexity, however I think they are great as a marketing tool as most people are very impressed by the way the concept sounds like
MaximusRo
11 Mar 17 #51
That would mean you had to stop to charge 3 times one way, 6 times total, at least 30 min/charge, 3 hours? What if the charger is already in use by someone else?
GAVINLEWISHUKD
11 Mar 17 #52
Yes 60 mile round trip in the middle of winter in a 24kw one will leave your with a squeaky bum. Looking for lorries to slip stream. No problem in a 30kw one.

For the people that keep saying "you will need to charge it all the time". If you are the person who goes to the office Mon-Fri for 47 weeks a year and has to travel 20-౩0 (24kw) or 20-40 (30kw) each way then this is what makes the most sense. It facilitates getting to work and back at less cost than an ICE car. If you live in an area with other perks like free parking in the town, free charging then it's an extra bonus.

As for the airport runs. Either everybody has a jet set life style, big families or are a taxi. I go on 3 holidays a year and only one would be from a none regional airport. So just means setting off an hour early for two 30min stops at the services.

For the guys who like to drive on long runs without stops the 2018 Nissan leaf will have a big battery and do over 200 real world miles according to Nissan.
MaximusRo
11 Mar 17 #53
Problem is, the more popular they get, the less chances you will get to find a free charger, so you cannot just add another hour to your trip, it won;t be as simple as that, IMO.

They do seem to increase range one drop at a time, classic business plan nowadays... no sudden jumps

If you speak to any EV owner the issue is never about spaces being full but charges been out of use. It's a real issue that needs sorting asap.

When 60kw becomes the norm fast charges will be less of an issue.

Battery cost has come down loads in the last 5 years. When the Leaf arrived in 2011 Nissan could have given you a 60kw Leaf but it would have cost £50k and nobody would have bought it.

When battery costs drop to a level where production costs makes the car the same price as an ICE car then more people will move.
While I think diesel has had its day I think petrol will be the new diesel.
MaximusRo
11 Mar 17 #56
I don't know, when it takes 30 min to charge 80%, I cannot imagine them not being in use, when a traditional pump takes 2 mins and they are always quite busy.
But in the event there is one that is busy, what are you going to do, wait for 30 mins or so to free up?
Tesla introduced some extra fees to limit time spent at chargers https://www.google.ro/amp/s/electrek.co/2016/12/16/tesla-supercharger-idle-fees/amp/

The prices are artificially/politically kept up for various reasons. A very interesting documentary: http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0489037

But you are missing that most people with over 200 miles available will either charge at home or once a week at the supermarket while they do the weekly shop.
The other point is that charge times will be reduced due to faster charges. Both CCS and Chademo are both testing 150kw charges. So now you 30mins becomes 10ish mins. Tesla are looking at 350kw chargers.
Shell have also announced that they will be bringing DC fast charging to its petrol stations. Shell knows there is profit to be made in selling electricity (buy for 8p and sell for 20p, easy money) and that also EV owners spend more in the shops.

Times change. 20 years ago there were 10 petrol stations within 5 mins of my house. Now there are 3 of which 2 are at supermarkets (where staying for 30min or more is not a problem). This is despite there being many more cars.

Potentially your local Asda has 200+ charging spots available yet only 8 petrol ones. Charging is not looking as much of an issue now is it?
Norway already has started these kind of things. They have a 102 space car park where 100 spaces have standard charges and 2 DC fast chargers. It even has a big load balancing battery pack.
People like Tesco could offer better rates to get you into the shop at off peak times to better balance staffing levels. Use club card point to buy charging. Peak time could be 1 clubcard point gets you 1 mins charging where off peak gets you two mins. The possibilities are endless.

http://dailycaller.com/2015/05/28/tesla-supercharger-station-powered-by-diesel-generators-video/

no one with an electric car will charge once a week. As someone already pointed out, you lose about 30% range in the winter. Range anxiety is real, when I had my Leaf for a week, although I only did about 18 miles one way, I pretty much had to charge every single day to get over the range anxiety. I do not want to plan everything 100%, I want to be able to take the car on an impromptu drive during lunch maybe etc.

Another thing that I find a bit concerning is that hydrogen cars, who are really not polluting (the huge number of car batteries and the polution to generate electricity will soon bite back) are not promoted any more...

I think this is time for me to ditch the diesel, I have a few expensive repairs looming plus usual service and MOT's, and tyres. Not to mention, at 13 years old, the 2.2CRD is probably in Hammond's cross-hairs come autumn. I only do ~3,000-5,000 miles a year, so the Leaf seems perfect. The longest I drive is up to Sheffield and/or London every month (I'm based in Northampton), and Ecotricity's network is pretty constant all the way up the M1 & M6. Also, I'm an ecotricity customer so will get £40.00 off my bills, and 52 free charges a year at their stations.

I just spoke to the dealership, the deal is still available, and the colour is Flame Red. Other colours are available, but at the cost of an extra £250.00 for the white, et cetera. Similarly, additional mileage is available.

Eco mode was sufficient for city driving but I needed to take it off when coming out of busy junctions and going uphill on motorways.
The standard mode is very nippy but takes about 10-15 miles off the range of the car if you leave it on all the time.
I reckon they should have it in eco mode by default and have the button engage "boost mode" (with an animated icon of a burning wheel) :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry for the late reply as didn't have a notification.
I not sure why you think people won't just charge once a week. As the average private mileage is somewhere between 125-152 miles per week (depending on who's figures you use). At well over 200 miles available, even in winter many people won't get range anxiety.

While we are very reliant on gas for electricity it is relatively clean. Coal is on a decline and in the summer months at night it's almost not used. It drops below 5% at night now and as we speak it's below 10%.
But going forward we are going to have to manage our output. Some experts suggest peak electricity cost could hit 25p per kWh by 2030.

I also had the four day test drive back in January and it was very cold for all four days, which the dealership told me would be the best possible test of if the car was suitable for me. The car I had was a 30kw Tekna with a 6kw charger. The range indicated was between 106 and 116 every day depending on how heavy my right foot was coming home the night before. My commute is 35 miles each way from the border of Lincolnshire into deepest darkest Norfolk (a backward place where there are few public chargers at present), so I needed to be confident I could do the 70 mile round trip on a single home charge with enough left over to cover any necessary detours, my total annual mileage is approx 18K.
I got home every day with a minimum of 25% showing still on the battery and 25miles plus in hand, on one night I took a detour that added 20 miles to my journey but I still had 20% remaining when I got home (Obviously I took it a little easy that night to increase the range) To say the least I was very impressed. I decided to buy one, after having the Tekna version for the test drive I was not going to settle for the base Visia or the in-between Acenta version. When I worked out all the costs I decided an ex-demonstrator which had suffered the first (worst) part of the depreciation made betters sense, this and the fact that at the time Nissan would put in a £1k contribution to the deposit on the PCP. After a week I found the perfect deal for me (Because I really do intend to pay the GFV and keep the car) I got a 2016 (4 month old at the time I picked it up) Technically an ex-demonstrator, although in reality with just 36 miles on the clock it would have been better described as a pre-reg. For £17.5K less the £1K from Nissan I put in £1.5K (I would expect to loose a minimum of £500 a year in depreciation on any car, so viewed the deposit as being me paying the depreciation up front) So the pcp is for £15K (On a £34K car!) 36 x £232 with a GFV of just over £8K Bargain! I even got the first two services thrown in for free along with mud-flaps, mats and a boot-liner! As the GFV is so low I have not bothered with gap insurance and I am enjoying driving as good as a brand new car, with no MOT tests to worry about, no servicing for the first 2 years (and only £99 per annual service after that) and with the car being so new everything under warranty anyway. Free road tax and worry free motoring is the icing on the cake. The only small downside is that my electricity bill has gone up by just over £30 a month. Overall I am very happy with the car and cannot begin to tell you how noisy / smelly and rough ICE cars are to drive or be a passenger in now. I nearly forgot to mention how quick it is, do not consider these to be milk float slow. If you pull up beside one and sneer at the driver they will almost certainly leave you for dead from the lights, to date I have done this more times than I really should admit. You also get a subsidised home charger from Nissan just make sure you go for the £99 extra 32 amp version if you want to charge it up fully on economy 7. Each night the car draws between 17kw to 22kw depending on my right foot and the air conditioning, so at 6.2p per Kw I am spending a little over £1 a day on electricity, when my old car took £7 per day to fuel, the £6 per day saving is pretty much completely covering the cost of the PCP, let alone all the other benefits.

Hi all, will go and pick mine up at the end of the month, just wondering did you all get any temporary insurance from Nisaan or did you have to take out your own cover on the day you picked the vehicle up?

Without the actual cost of the car or the GFV it is impossible to say if this is a decent deal or not.
abjem
17 Apr 17 #88
For me it didn't even come up, you know the date you are picking up the car and the registration number, why wouldn't you just automatically insure it from that day?

Ive been quoted £16,350 as the cash price

A 30kw Tekna with a 6kw charger retails at very close to £34k new. To get any 1 year old car for half price is going some, however I think you could do better if you hold your powder. My 4 month old 30 kw Tekna with a 6kw charger with 36 miles on the clock was £17,500 but I got a £1k deposit contribution from Nissan to ad to my £1,500 deposit to make the finance a net outstanding £15,000 Which I guess is why my monthly payments were lower, I would expect the GFV is pretty similar to the one I got. It is a great car, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but I think you could do a little better, try asking if the deposit contribution is still available.

Thats your view abjem, however if I am entitled to 5 days free insurance I will take it thank you.

I was actually told by the dealer that they didn't do it and then contacted Nissan insurance to find the dealership was on the scheme so told my salesman that and he then managed to get it to work!

Hello sunilm,

I followed your instructions but it takes you to a form that's nothing to do with the Nissan Leaf instead it looks like its an application form to be an examiner, can you shed any light on this please
sunilm
19 May 17 #102
Really? I thought it was just a contact details form so then I would get your email. What type of examiner does it say? I just looked at it and saw nothing relating to being an examiner for anything

That's the form completed, don't know what happened earlier on but the form loaded fine this time.

Thanks

Yeah I passed it on to my mate he should email you next week. Let me know if he can give u a good deal.

20 May 17 #106
Awesome deal.
Electricity works out around 3p per mile...

A normal car for £200 would cost 9p per mile.

6p per mile saved. If you do 10000 miles a year, that's £600 saved a year, or £50 a month.

However, there is also the new 41kw Renault Zoe which does 140-170 miles on one charge. And is much cheaper. £17k new on carwow with battery included. Or £13k with battery lease.
