Ok, yes it seems like the state of GTX 1080's is in flux, so much so that the price just keep tumbling. Anyhow on with the show, err.. I mean deal.

This has just gone out of stock from Amazon.it, but it will be back in on or before the 19th March at a cost of €493.86, to select this price use the box below the add to basket button labelled "Confronta offerte su Amazon" it is the top one "Spedizione GRATUITA. Dettagli Venduto da: Amazon" if you use a browser to convert the text it will be in English, and very obvious.

Currently with delivery the price is coming in at a grand total of €492.06, which converts to between £424-426 using a fee free credit card. Make sure you select the option to pay in EUR at the checkout, do not let Amazon complete the Forex for you as you will end up paying £441.18, so £16 more!

To sum up, what a bargain, in nvidia terms anyhow!

My issue with a 1080 is it's uselessly positioned. It is inadequate for 4K gaming (20-30fps) and overkill for 1440p where a 1070 is better value and perfectly aligned performance wise to deliver 60+ FPS.

The 1080 unfortunately fell short resolution wise and unless you're SLI is pretty pointless IMO.

At least the 1080ti can deliver 4k and is useful, in that sense the 30% although relatively small is a huge gain, you can play at the the holy grail resolution.

Can someone else who ordered check their Amazon.it account - I'm seeing the following when trying to view recent orders.

"Si è verificato un problema con la visualizzazione dei dettagli dell'ordine.
Se non visualizzi l'ordine che stai cercando, prova ad aggiornare la pagina o attendi alcuni minuti.

Non hai effettuato alcun ordine negli ultimi 6 mesi. Visualizza ordini nel 2017"

Which (with my limited knowledge of Italian) would suggest I've not made any recent orders (ordered Sunday) :-(

I think you just want to call NVIDIA greedy.
Uncommon.Sense
8 Mar 17 #60
I think it is greed, you only need to look at the GTX 280 launch to show that, they officially launched it at $649, but had no problem dropping it to $499 after only 6 weeks once they realised how good the AMD/ATI cards were. So competition, stopped them being greedy.
Nate1492
8 Mar 17 #59
Neither. It depends on how you compare cards here. The 680 had a much smaller die size in comparison (294 vs 417) and the 690 launched at $1000. The 580 launched at $499 and the 590 launched at $699.

Which is exactly the same price as the 1080Ti. Not considering the 1080Ti to be on the same tier as the 590 and 690 is a bit silly, just because it doesn't share the same number, they are in the same position.

The 480 launched at $499 as well.

The 280 launched at $649.

I mean, $649 in 2008 is inflation calculated to $730 in 2017 dollars.

So... My point? This isn't 'mega inflation' or 'mega greed' or anything. This is normal pricing. Some generations they've offered multiple re-ups on their high end offerings, and they've floated from $499 to $699 throughout the years.

How do returns work when buying through the Italian Amazon site?
MikefromWinchester to priceyrice

It is the same as UK site - but you can call Amazon Customer Services to confirm.

The warranty will be with manufacturer anyway after 30 days.

I just bit and bought this - I realised yesterday on a short test of PU Battlegrounds that to get a decent framerate on my 1070 @ 3440 x 1440 I needed to drop so many settings to medium that the game looked a bit ropey!

I guess it's only going to get worse as time goes on so I think for my res a 1080 is minimum... hope Amazon take my 1070 card back after I sold the game  We'll see

The was a 1070 from Amazon France for £330, but not sure if it was supplied by Amazon or if that included shipping... anyway, that has now expired and the current best price is £340.

Also, not sure if Nvidia have locked bundled game codes to the hardware or Experience account... not sure how this works or if it is implemented, but it has been talked about... no more selling on the bundled games!
MikefromWinchester to Stu.C
6 Mar 17 1 #51
The game codes are not locked to the account - they are reliant on the owner having a 1070 or 1080 installed. I sold it on the premise that 'YOU MUST HAVE A 1070 or 1080 installed"!!

Make that clear or people would get annoyed. You can also activate it for people by logging in to their Uplay account on your own PC and activating the game if they give you the credentials but I'm not sure many people would want to do that. They can then install the game on their PC from Uplay once you log back out.

Yeah me too - but I bought a Asus Dual 1070 a few days ago with the recent For Honor/Wildlands code for £330 and sold the game for £30 so I'm pretty sure it's going to be hard to match that price / performance wise.

Would be sensible to get a 1080 though for me, as I'm gaming at 3440 x 1440 but tbh most of my games are running between very high and ultra at steady 85fps....

Do I really need the 1080???? Do ireally need to spend another £100???? Only time will tell :0
Stu.C
6 Mar 17 #48
I agree with this... the 1070 is adequate in most games from the past 12 months at 1440p right now, but the 1080 will certainly give more longevity.

I bought a 1070 for 1440p during Black Friday week, and paid £365 for a top of the line Asus, but 1080 cards were over £150 more at the time (I know there was the odd deal, that sold out quickly, but I didn't get to one, and I won't pay £500 for a gfx card).

However, this 1080 at £60 more than I paid is a compelling option that will probably have at least 1 year more useful life than a 1070. Generally speaking, 1070 cards are still priced at £340 +... if I didn't have a 1070 already, I would be buying this 1080 deal!!!
MikefromWinchester
6 Mar 17 #47
Funny how many people were saying the 1080 / 1070 prices wouldn't drop and bought in at the ridiculous prices Nvidia and partners were charging for these cards initially. I mean these 1080s were over £600 even in January this year.

So many people with more money than sense - I should imagine Nvidias bottom line will look rather good this financial year.

Aside from the excellent 9500/9600/9700/9800 (Radeon R300/350/360 Series).

I loved my 9600 XT, although it was my first experience with ASUS and their shoddy build-quality. The card was great, the crappy cooler ASUS used? Not so much.

6 Mar 17 #45
I won't be drawn in to a conversation about Intel anti-trust cases and the large portion of Intel you refuse to acknowledge. But suffice to say we don't agree on several points.

The 9800 was a good card, I recall it was nip and tuck with an Nvidia card I had at the time, but I wouldn't go near them on the basis their drivers were atrocious.

So who buys a card like this? You do.:man:
vulcanproject
5 Mar 17 #43
Things would have been different if AMD had given up on their imagined entitlement earlier as well, considering the judge's comments did not absolve them completely.

I found many ATi cards to be excellent. I had several. From the 9800 series thru the X800 and then X18/19 series ATi led the way as long as you didn't skimp on coolers for the latter. The AMD acquisition totally messed them up, the HD2000 and 3000 series were pretty much junk.

Nvidia have only tightened their grip on the market and stuff like the GTX1070 and this 1080 are the reason why. I happen to think the 1080 is a good 1440p card at this price now, gives more headroom than the 1070 for the next 12 months.
The_Hoff
5 Mar 17 #42
Nobody can predict what the markets will do especially in technology, but I agree, they massively complicated their business model by fighting on two fronts, although I understand the thought process as to why they acquired them.

I never had an ATI card, they were terrible. I sent from a 3dfx Voodoo straight to early Nvidia and stuck with them.

Things would be much different if AMD hadn't spent millions in litigation costs and bring stitched up by Intel with OEM sales (Intel paid HP, Lenovo, IBM to delay shipments of AMD based machines).

But i know your standpoint so rather than bore everyone, let's talk about the 1080.
vulcanproject
5 Mar 17 #41
RX 4xx hasn't sold that well according to steam stats. But your reply has little to do with what I said.

The actual point was ATi would almost certainly have been better without AMD. AMD probably would have been better and had more money for R&D if they hadn't taken on $2bn worth of debt to overpay acquiring ATi. And then badly mismanage such an acquisition integrating it into the company.

They actually paid over $5bn just for ATi in 2006. 7 years later the entire of AMD was worth half that! Luckily they have recovered a bit, but not quite to 2006 levels.

That's it.

On topic the 1080Ti will probably be faster than any Vega part, Nvidia rarely let AMD have the fastest card. The question is whether or not AMD can produce a range that competes against the 1080 for decent money.
The_Hoff
5 Mar 17 1 #40
WD2 is absolutely an exception, that game runs like **** on a 1080 even. I think we both agree on:

1. A 1080 is insufficient to play 4K @ 60fps+.
2. At 1440p a 1070 of good standing can play 9/10 games at [email protected]+ with very few concessions.

Not saying it's not a great card, I just don't understand who buys it and why. A 1070 is a better card for the cash if 1440p is your ambition.
The_Hoff
5 Mar 17 #39
Already leaks of 560/570/580 cards, but unclear if they're re-hashes of the 4XX series with high clock based on Polaris, or if they're Vega 10 based with HBM2.

I was waiting to see what the 490 offered, but no idea where that card has gone, historically the X90 card have always been decent £/FPS.
Stu.C
5 Mar 17 #37
I've not heard anyone say this before now! I'd be very surprised is Vega is faster than a 1080Ti, and if it is comparable, AMD would be fools to sell it as low as £400, as they could easily sell for £500 and still undercut nvidia by a decent margin. Also, if Vega is too cheap, they don't have pricing space for the RX500 cards, and I assume the RX480 and RX460 will still be on the market.

Since AMD bought ATi they have nigh on ruined BOTH companies because of mismanagement. They paid an insane amount to acquire ATi, well accepted to have been far above the real market value and loaded the company with debt to do it.

In the 10 years since, they didn't deliver a single competitive CPU design. AMD are taking a year to deliver an equivalent GPU to Nvidia. The market cap of the single company today (AMD) is less than the combined companies TEN YEARS AGO.

Realists gonna realise reality.

It's not Intel or Nvidia's fault AMD take years to respond to anything they do and screw up all the time. They completely mismanaged ATi.

GTX1080 is a 10 month old card, it's being replaced at the top of the tree and it's price has been reduced £150 voluntarily despite zero competition. It'll be a year old before AMD actually bring anything to the table.

Yup, nvidia really, really, really need some competition, $499 was the MSRP launch price for the GTX 680 in May 2012, and even then that was seen as getting on for over priced (IIRC it was £400 ish in the UK), now the 1080Ti is launching at $699, mega inflation or just corporate greed, you decide
mamboboy
5 Mar 17 1 #28
I know, I don't get their logic tbh. they don't seem to be taking into account how much visual quality of games and hardware tech has improved since the 7870 days. Back then even the 'enthusiast' standard was 1080p - having a high end card basically just meant you could run games at ultra settings and 60fps pretty much.

Now its a different ball game... high end gamers want at least 1440 and ~100fps.

Although I agree in one respect, high end GPU's shouldn't be priced at what they are. I think £400/ £550 is what the 1080 and Ti cards should be... but to expect the most high end consumer GPU on the market to be £350, and the 2nd tier £190 is laughable. May as well give every card below them away in cereal boxes .

And blame AMD for being completely inept. Ruined ATI, they've not made a genuinely decent card since they were bought out. Then cocked up the ryzen launch - I imagine some heads will roll over that. I reckon Vega will be a flop too.

If only intel had carried on its development in Larrabee, granted looking back it was doomed from the start, but it might have we might have had some competition with newer generations.
