It's about the same as the 617, from the G4, but runs much cooler. The G5 Plus has the 625 though, which is a fantastic SoC.
The Moto brand seems to be going downhill recently.
They can't even get a successful Nougat update out for the 4th gen.

not really a great step up from G4.. pretty much comparable specs with G4.. was hoping for at least a better camera and processor when I heard about its launch... slightly disappointed.. :smirk:

agree with the comments above, the G5 plus is the key one for new specs. However this update brings a smaller phone (size and screen, G4 was too bulky for most light users) with better power consumption, metal body, Nougat at same price point than last year despite £ tumble. For a non heavy user this is a good basic and future proof phone with tried and tested components.

2 Mar 17#6
basically if you have the G4 already not worth the upgrade, if you want one then go for this as it has pretty much everything the G4 plus had last year, screen is smaller but much better, less heavy, metal body, more RAM and turbo charging

P2 looks good on paper but has too many bugs that lenovo seem to be ignoring. I reckon h6x is the best pic of that bunch although might want to hold off as apparently they are releasing a 4gb ram version of the 6x soon.

That's what I was thinking, they have their flaws. The Lenovo camera is probably the weakest however battery out weighs that. My fear is Lenovo will not support it.
The Honor 6X seems to have a great camera but lacking in other areas.
MOTO G has now become a brand within itself and will receive full support moving forward which is a big bonus.

Heat added for being the first G5 deal to post and with the Amazon exclusive 3GB configuration. Indeed the upgrade between the standard G4 and the standard G5 is incremental, but the upgrade between the G4 Plus and the G5 Plus is more pronounced and this is where the smart money is. 3GB RAM, 32 GB Storage, upgraded camera, upgraded Snapdragon 625 2GHZ processor, NFC, 4K video etc. This will retail for £260, but if with some competitive discounting, the price is nearer to the £199 sweet spot, the phone should remain running fast for a long time and only hampered by the lack of future software updates.

I bought the Huawei Honor 6X 32gb for 225 sim free from Amazon... Flubit will knock off another 15gbp, but I wanted one pronto... G5 wouldn't stand a chance, blown away by this one... I am amazed the reviewers are raving about Oneplus when this is the real affordable flagship killer - at £400 or thereabouts Oneplus is edging towards flagship pricing. I have have an iPhone 7 from work, used Note 5 for the last year until I sold it... this thing is far better than both of those and it's half the price... Never thought I'd be impressed by Huawei, but the honor series is serious bang for buck... 3GB RAM, 32 gb on board memory, crisp 1080p 5.5" display, 12 MP dual camera, dual SIM, expandable storage, NFC, fast charging (admittedly not the best), 0.3sec unlock on fingerprint sensor... which is crazy fast... There is a feature called Ultrashot for the camera, from the phone in a locked state, double click the volume button and it not only bring the camera app up, it takes the picture - it actually shows the time to taking the picture and mine is anywhere between 1 sec to 1.6 seconds... from laying on the table to picture taken in 1.6 seconds... why on earth would you buy anything else.

The source is the Lenova/Motorola website. If you look at the .com site and the .co.uk site, you'll see the specification differences. Apart from the cameras. The H6X gets hit and miss camera reviews - a bit of a one trick pony.
And software is a bit of a concern - the update to Nougat is (according to some reviews) much needed for the Honor.
I'm not knocking it, it's the front runner in the 'wait for the G5 plus or buy now' contest. The camera on the G5 Plus does look to be significantly better and it's being launched with Nougat so there is the temptation to wait.

One thing that is annoying is the G5 Plus looks to have the same battery as the G4 Plus, I was hoping that would be improved.
In fact the G5 standard has a smaller capacity battery than the G4 standard.

tenohfive
8 Mar 17#97
I've got charging cables at home, at work, in the car and battery packs in all 3 locations. As long as it'll get through a day of normal use I can live with it. Especially if the Turbopower claims (6 hours use from 15 mins charging) are close to true.
Out of interest though, is the G5 Plus' Snapdragon 635 any more energy efficient than the 617 it's replacing in the G4 Plus?
dealcatcherer
8 Mar 17#98
there were reviews noting that smaller batteries coupled with low energy new chips and adding the energy efficient Nougat offsets it permitting a smaller less bulky design and specs... turbo charge if works would offset any downside of days with high usage... all in all I think the G5 plus is worth the money and expect it to be future proof for 2 to 3 years, hence why I am waiting. My Moto G2 4g I purchased 2.5 years ago is still ok, I want an upgrade now, my father will take it from me, he does not use these much appart from calls, photo and light browsing... my battery still last all day with moderate usage but 8gb of internal memory is problematic for apps nowadays.
Jimmyboy
8 Mar 17#99
The turbo charger I have with my G4 Plus is excellent, it is painful though when charging at a different place where I haven't got it with me once used to the speed. I know every phone and usage is different but for me I charge it every night around 8pm and by lunchtime the next day I'm getting down to about 20%-30% so need to recharge. I don't always do a full recharge then but just enough to get me through to the evening. Ideally I want a two day battery, I used to get that with an Elephone P8000 but I don't want to go down the route of a cheap import again.
I wonder if turbo charging has an effect on the battery over time. Maybe not I don't know and haven't read anything bad about it.

Nothing obvious I've spotted yet. Some apps looked a bit different for example WhatsApp messages appear slightly differently. Not good or bad just different font and layout when they first appear.
The pull down notification bar is better with shortcuts along the top for wifi and batter etc.
One thing it has cured for me is WiFi had recently become quite slow on my phone. I'd often turn wifi off if watching a video as was much faster using the mobile network. Honor is significantly better than any Chinese brands... Huawei is the next Samsung, their products shows great engineering prowess and like I mentioned, the 6X is far superior in software and hardware than anything in this price range and in some cases even in a higer price bracket.
G5 plus would make a good phone but it's design is quite ugly and I suspect the specs to match the 6X will be a £100 more... and thatnks to pound flooring it, suspect that will get any better in the near future.
deanoh11
12 Mar 171#128
' the 6X is far superior in software' - ur having a laugh, it doesn't beat the (almost) pure android experience of the G5 plus, especially Chinese interfaces (including Hauwei)
As for the hardware, that depends heavily on the software. Also, the G5 Plus' camera blows the Huawei out of the water as it's the same one used in the Galaxy S7

Honor is not bad but camera is worse by a fair bit, UI is based on Marshmallow and many people are quite **** that honor is not upgrading it once the phone is sold so there are no guarantees you'll get 7 Nougat for a while... Price difference is not that excessive for a phone 6 months newer. Pound tumble affect everyone no advantage or disadvantage to be gained there. Screen is a bit smaller and of higher graphics quality. I reviewed both and found the Honor is OK but for a bit more cash I find the G5 plus to be a better opportunity for my needs.

Just ordered mine, hoping for release on Tuesday. struggled for 18 months with a Samsung J5, which I loved, except for 1.5 gb RAM. So looking forward to 3 gb!

I cancelled my preorder today and re odered as amazon had 2 offers during this period whereby if you brought gift vouchers you a) got £6 free and this morning b) got £5 free.. so as I said. I cancelled my preorder which was due for despatch tonight. NOW I have saved £11 in free gift vouchers and only have to wait until the 27th for the phone.. not bad eh? thanks amaz.

Carphone Warehouse taking pre-orders for the G5 Plus if anyone's interested. Saying 4th April release date.
thanks, weird there were no talks of a 2GB ram model but starting at 3GB... Price is also cheaper, meant to be £280. I expect Amazon to list soon as preorder for Normal G5 is now done... I want to see what they list...
Jimmyboy
24 Mar 17#148
I'm hoping there is going to be a 4GB ram model. Amazon may well not list the Plus model at all. It's only a month ago they started listed 1 version of the G4 Plus model even though it had been out for almost a year.

24 Mar 17#149
ah ok? didn't know that... thanks for the info, Moto G5 plus info has been minimal so far, I am guessing to insure the G5 would sell well first... It is a bit frustrating, the G5 plus been available for a few weeks on preorder in Germany...
dealcatcherer
24 Mar 17#150
yep after researching, carphone warehouse has the exclusive on the G5 plus, only a 2GB model available at £250.
For the 3GB need to go to Germany at 289€... That's same price in £ than GB for lower specs...

24 Mar 17#151
You don't need to go to Germany for the 3GB version, just go to the UK Motorola website

Look both of u, if 2GB is OK for u then get it from CW in 10 days. If u want 3GB then wait a bit longer and get it from Motorola!!

I'd rather smaller 5 inch screen but need gyroscope to justify another £180

So can I ask for suggestions for the best video player for those who have a lot of MKV and HEVC files. many thanks Ian

Really depends what apps you have on your phone. For example just by having snapchat notifications disabled I can go from 1 day to 3 days battery.

I've ordered the G5 Plus from Motorola direct. They are useless though. I wish Amazon sold the Plus. Forts the order was on hold and their customer service couldn't access the order system so couldn't help, they said they again later. 4 days later i tried again and this time they are pushing the order through but again still couldn't access the order system.

I ordered too, first time my bank refused the charge (they use interpay for financial transactions, this appears to be a problem) so my order was cancelled, then grey was out of stock, then I managed again but paid via PayPal, now I have order confirmation with a number and going on the system through link shows ready for delivery estimated on the 11... high hopes this is gonna all work out now

from 16gb how much is user memory 10gb or 12gb, Isn't that too little in second or third Android upgrade if there is any that storage will be not enough. I know can expand with sd card but some apps are not movable .My G3 is 8 gb from which 4,5 gb user memory, storage is full even with card 32 gb.

Moto g5 has only 10GB actually user accessible and G5 plus has 24gb user accessible, they should mention this is very important. 16 GB is too little and makes device to cheap, no value.

Just had the confirmation of mine being delivered on the 11th too. Wonder why only 3gb ram in the G5 Plus. I'm coming from the G4 Plus with 4gb ram and wondering if I'll notice. I guess the bump in processor etc may offset the decrease.

4 Apr 17#176
yeah all set to start delivery, release date was today officially with CPW so it seems that was a one week exclusive. I don't think anyone would notice 3GB ram or 4 unless you are gaming with heavy programmes runni, the chip is much better... I come from my trusted long term partner G2, 1GB ram and 8gb storage that only now is struggling.

Really cant decide between this, the £139 2GB O2 one or £249 5+ from Motorola direct.
Is this the sweet spot or is £40 to much for the extra 1GB? or is it a case of £70 is definitely worth the upgrade to the G5Plus?
dealcatcherer
5 Apr 17#178
Well that depend on your use of it and how long you are thinking of keeping it. If you want a great camera and intend on keeping the phone for 2 year + then Moto G5+ is the one to go (32gb +3gb ram insures it will be future proof for the ever more demanding OS and app size and ram usage increase) on the other hand if you only want the phone for a year plus, already have a digital camera and do not game or app space is not high on your priorities then the lower spec normal one great phone and I would go for the G5 offer from 02.

Will replace 12-18 months as tend to get bored of the phone, use it for podcasts, email, facebook, occasional Amazon prime video and some games - Angry Birds, Splendour and Eldersign as opposed to fast reflex ones. Believe FB eats the RAM though hence thought on 3GB version

5 Apr 171#180
seems i. your case the lower spec one is best, FB app is rubbish, I managed to get the Facebook lite one that does not require messenger, works much better, before that I was putting a shortcut to the page via chrome. that main FB app is absolutely rubbish and so is outlook.

I'm using Moto X-Play dual sim
Battery was great 3150mah i think but now got issues switching off randomly and not lasting day
21mp camera is great and i rarely see anything comparable now
Has NFC which i like here but spend a lot of time abroad where not an option to use.
I'm a heavy user and the dual sim essential was hoping for this would be a good replacement but even replacement battery, seems half my current capacity..
Any other suggestions

7 Apr 17#182
perhaps you can replace the battery in yours? even if non-detachable, it may be done? otherwise even the G5 plus seems a bit out... If you have £400, I would go with the oneplus3t... Defo the one to go in terms of value for money and high end flagship requirements. IMHO

theres a company advertising replacement, but havent confirmed back to me that the battery they replace is the same power, cant see them for sale either, but there is video and not too difficult a task.
dont really wanna spend £400 on it to be honest, i use a tough case as it is but it gets exposed to quite a lot during the weeks at work.
Im looking xiaomi mi5 or note 4 pro ? possibly
the zplay, is just too pricy too really and not great advancements

My G5 Plus arrived today and I'm quite impressed. It feels like a totally different phone to the G4. Very similar in size, 0.3" difference in screen size is hardly noticeable. The changeover between handsets was a bit painful though. Previously Motorola had a great app to do it all for you but this time I used Google and the "set up a nearby handset" option. This transferred about 50% of things so had to manually download a lot of missing apps and reconfigure the screen layout etc. There did seem to be another way of doing this during the initial set up but Motorola screen suggested holding the old phone and the new one back to back so they could connect. I assume this connection would be established using NFC. The old phone didn't have this so nothing happened. Sure there must be an easier way that I missed.
The camera seems great and initial impressions of the battery looks good. The only thing I can't get working is 4G for some reason. I might try the sim in sim slot 2 just in case only one is 4G capable.

Yep SIM 1 doesn't seem to support 4G but SIM 2 works fine.

They can't even get a successful Nougat update out for the 4th gen.
Waiting for the Nokia 6 to drop
The Honor 6X seems to have a great camera but lacking in other areas.
MOTO G has now become a brand within itself and will receive full support moving forward which is a big bonus.
Decisions lol
'Is it 2GB or 3GB'?
It's a shame because a G5 with dual sim capability 3 gb ram and NFC would be ideal for me.
Maybe a Plus with dual sim may appear in due course but the specs I have seen don't include it.
nice one..
question for owners of the moto g4 (dual sim). Does the dual sim aspect take its toll on the battery? Also was the execution of the dual sim spot on or was it buggy?
Slap a minor upgrade and it's a new phone.
Before when Moto g 1st gen came out. Updated came within 2-3 months. Moto g came with Jelly bean, got a update to KitKat and another update to Lollipop
Nowadays you'll be lucky to get even 1 update with this crp Lenovo!
I believe this probably has been posted before but just a heads up for those in the a market for a reasonably priced and specced phone
Same question for the H6X and Redmi Note 4X - will they do RAW?
Currently on a samsung galaxy S4 been running since day one. Think its time for an upgrade
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_231921.html?wid=4&utm_source=tt_de
And software is a bit of a concern - the update to Nougat is (according to some reviews) much needed for the Honor.
I'm not knocking it, it's the front runner in the 'wait for the G5 plus or buy now' contest. The camera on the G5 Plus does look to be significantly better and it's being launched with Nougat so there is the temptation to wait.
In fact the G5 standard has a smaller capacity battery than the G4 standard.
Am I the only one that would be happy with a slightly fatter phone but which had a beefy battery in?
Out of interest though, is the G5 Plus' Snapdragon 635 any more energy efficient than the 617 it's replacing in the G4 Plus?
I wonder if turbo charging has an effect on the battery over time. Maybe not I don't know and haven't read anything bad about it.
If it's a decent camera u want, this blows the 6X and any other out of the water at this price range!
Hello Moto!
Its available on my wifes G4...should she download it now?
The pull down notification bar is better with shortcuts along the top for wifi and batter etc.
One thing it has cured for me is WiFi had recently become quite slow on my phone. I'd often turn wifi off if watching a video as was much faster using the mobile network. Speedtests showed it as about 1meg even though the same tests using my laptop were 35meg+. After the update its full speed again. No idea why that was but it's now gone
If I do the download for her, and it messes her phone up, then she wont be best pleased :disappointed:
Nougat has a better deeper version of Doze in built so hopefully even better!
This is a nonsense statement, RAM has nothing to do with processing power !
G5 plus would make a good phone but it's design is quite ugly and I suspect the specs to match the 6X will be a £100 more... and thatnks to pound flooring it, suspect that will get any better in the near future.
As for the hardware, that depends heavily on the software. Also, the G5 Plus' camera blows the Huawei out of the water as it's the same one used in the Galaxy S7
If you did is it any good?
