Decent price for the 6gb - driver update released last week increases dx12 performance too.

I have a R9 390X and a GTX 970, let me tell you, the AMD drivers are a much better experience. The only real advantage of NVIDIA is the lower CPU reliance in DX11 games.

GeForce experience has managed to complete hose a few of my Windows installations in the past, while forgetting to use the Custom install when updating drivers.

Also WattMan is absolutely amazing compared to very limited the tools NVIDIA offer, if you want to overclock and tweak your NVIDIA card you've basically got MSI Afterburner (which I personally hate, as it looks like some tacky 90s crap).

And built in ability to play games in 3D on a 3D monitor/TV. That's the only thing I miss with my rx480

A review from a few weeks ago to base current performance. Beats the RX480 on average across the resolutions tested.

The new drivers from a few days ago deliver a nice big boost in several of the DX12 games tested as well like Hitman.

Overclocking performance looks great too, getting on for 980ti performance in the OC test!

MSI Afterburner has skins to bring it into the present.

Nvidia owners have plenty of overclocking utility options, it's just MSI afterburner is the best in the business. It's had a lot of time to mature and is well known and supported with all sorts of add ons too.

Wattman is still buggy and unstable. Lots of error notifications and crashes even now.

I only play on 1920x1080 and would want to record gameplay at 1080p without lagging. Scan have the Asus rx480 8gb for £174.98 plus DOOM.

This has not been my experience. Although I can only comment on my experience.

Probably get a better overclock on third party software than you would on wattman itself in my experience. Not that RX480 actually overclocks very much anyway.

It beats a throttling reference RX 480, which nobody is suggesting that anybody buy. A custom card running at a stable 1300MHz+ is a different proposition and the only fair comparison (especially given that custom GTX 1060s will be running at close to 2GHz out of the box due to GPU Boost). The fact is that there's really nothing between them in terms of performance overall, with the RX 480 performing better in some games and the GTX 1060 performing better in others. There's no sensible advice to offer other than saying that you should consider what games you want to play, look at comparisons of the two in those games, and purchase based on that.

Any dumb memes about driver quality are a fabrication. I use cards from both vendors regularly and there is no difference.

Not on my system, with any of the AMD cards I've had since it was released (including a couple of RX 480s and the R9 290X I'm currently using).

A reference GTX1060 beats a reference RX 480 9 months after launch, correct.

Are you suggesting that the reference RX 480 cards still suffer from thermal and power issues, won't reach their reference clocks and AMD haven't fixed them after all this time? That wouldn't reflect well on them.

Or are you suggesting that aftermarket cards all automatically boost much much higher than the reference cards?

I'm sure you can't mean either of these things because neither is true. Even 1300mhz for example is less than 3 percent higher than reference boost on the RX480. But I'm open to your explanation.

All the test linked to shows this MSI GTX1060 card and even the reference one leading RX 480. Naturally aftermarket cards overclock and boost better over reference it just depends how much better. That much is obvious. GTX1060 a lot better, RX 480 typically not a lot at all.

This test was done before Nvidia's latest driver however, which considerably closes the gap between some of the DX12 games by quite a bit and probably raises the average lead rather higher.


I'm glad you have had a fortunate experience with Wattman, unfortunately many have not. Not too reliable software that came out of AMD's notoriously unreliable Overdrive software. So notorious they changed the name to Wattman and relaunched it last year...

MSI afterburner is certainly more stable and mature, is the main point.

It was a today only deal and they stopped doing it now.
