first time customers only, then goes up to about £7-10 a month

do not let them touch your boiler - years ago had them out for an annual service (on a working boiler) as a new customer and they unplugged the air pump and wanted to charge me over £600 for a new water pump or a new boiler which they would give a discount for. I had to pay a local plumber to fix the problem and for my piece of mind he put a new air pump in for £20. I cancelled my contract with homeserve on day 14 but they still wanted to charge me for a service when they had broken a working boiler. The idiot manager I had to deal with, was an aggressive ******

The following year, Homeserve sent my account to debt collectors as I had cancelled my membership in the 14 day cancellation period and my direct debit. Instead of wanting £60 for service they wanted £30 for monthly premium unpaid. I wrote the debts collectors a reply outlining the case, dates, pictures, 2 engineers report (including British gas as I joined them and was paying a monthly premium - so they also did a service), copies of the phone bill, copies of demands for compensation invoices to Homeserve, copies of contact with CORGI (they messed with gas installation and were potentially dangerous and reckless) and demanded to the debt collectors that they must show me any original proof of me not fulfilling a contract or cease contact, otherwise I would have to contact solicitors to take further action. No contact from homeserve or the debt collectors, as there was a cost to me and ongoing unpaid damages by Homeserve. Seemed to work, but the Npower Homeserve experience was awful, they seemed to have teamed up with water companies now too

3 penneth:

I signed up for boiler cover with them...it was - I think - £12.99 a month.
Around about 10 months in my boiler broke.
They sent someone out 3 days later after many many calls to chase.
He took one look at the inside of the boiler, said it was dangerous and was giving out carbon monoxide fumes and said he couldn't work on it anymore. And then walked out.

I had 3 young children and was obviously very worried, but also very suspicious. Not least because you can't smell carbon monoxide, and he hadn't done anything other than take the front cover off.
So I got the family to my in laws and went and bought a carbon mo oxide detector.
Guess what?
It was fine.

I called them up and explained what had happened, and they insisted the report was correct, that the boiler was beyond economical repair, and that the policy didn't cover it.

As a 'gesture of good will' they immediately cancelled the cover, and sent a cheque for 10 months cover.

In short: if they think they'll lose out, you won't get it.

I wouldn't touch them with a s***ty stick.

Hi, I've got a light fitting where the bulb has melted into the fitting and another where part of the bulb has snapped in the fitting. Would this be covered under this policy?
Newbold
1 Mar 17 3 #9
Absolutely right. They made such a mess of our CH system that it cost them several hundred pounds in compensation to get it put right by people who knew what they were doing. Absolute cowboys! Never, ever, ever let them near a boiler or a heating system.
Newbold
1 Mar 17 #10
Very little prospect of much in the way of claims on these policies - a pretty safe bet for the insurer. And a pretty safe bet for the customer in not having these cowboys messing around with your electrics!

Terms & Conditions

What's covered:

An emergency caused by, or breakdown of, the domestic electrical wiring supply system and its components (switches, sockets, fuse)

What isn’t covered?

Household appliances + Faults within your boiler

They sent a local plumbers company to do my service, couldn't be happier. He even adjusted the gas valve to bring the emissions back into spec as they had drifted out since the last service.

Complete opposite experience to me, boiler broke down, plumber tried to say this that and other needed doing, they rejected claim (said it was an upgrade), I said fine but when I told them boiler was still not working they sent someone else out, gave me £200 as an apology and 2 free electric radiators.

I have AVIVA's Home Emergency Cover which is actually provided by Homeserve. The service wasn't too bad when I had to use it.

They fitted a new replacement gas isolation valve (that Transco had capped off when it had been leaking). They failed to turn up for the first two appointments but when someone did show up, the issue was sorted. They provided £60 compensation for the failed visits.

What was the opinion of the next boiler/gas engineer you got in to look at it?

Did you buy a proper detector or a domestic alarm?
You do know that a CO alarm is not a diagnostic device, they alarm with exposure to moderate and high CO levels. Even the ones with a display dont start reading till 30+ppm.

We had a glow worm boiler in our last place. Engineer came out to service and condemned it the moment he took the cover off.
A seal was damaged and you could visibly see carbon build up on outer faces.
It never once set off our CO alarm.

Excellent deal. Been with them for the last 2 years for home emergency cover and they have been brilliant (called them out on about half a dozen occasions). However, had to move to British Gas cover this year as the policy cost on renewal was ridiculous. Wonder how long till I'm classed as a new customer again...:smirk:

I took out the £1 per month plumbing cover a few months back. It's been brilliant. They sorted two issues for me with no issues.homeserve used to task out jobs to local providers but it looks like since they acquired home energy services they use their own engineers (at least in my area). I'd recommend them. We paid a fortune in rubbish work by local tradesmen before I took out this policy with them

They virtually begged my Ex Brother in law to join them as a "Clown Plumber"...... he has been a window cleaner for 20 years........did not stop him eventually doing emergency call outs for Homeserve. He used to knock on my door virtually everyday and ask if i had a plumbing part, or a tool for a job that he had on.
I remember once while he was in a customers house, he rang me to ask where a stop cock was likely to be?

Homeserve, really are the Laurel and Hardy of the Maintenance trade.

Not worth insuring unless you live in a house with 19th century wiring.

We had the plumbing cover for a year. We used it twice. Once for a supply pipe leak and once to replace an outside tap.

The tap was sorted fine. The supply pipe was an absolute nightmare, they were absolutely awful. It was eventually sorted after months and they paid us a fairly large chunk of compensation for their poor service.

Another thumbs down for this company. A few years ago they tried to argue my boiler flue was incorrectly installed therefore breakdown not covered (boiler had been installed a few years before and serviced annually elsewhere). Really poor customer service where they were telling us for weeks that the part was 'on order' and then came back with the installation issue. We had to refer to gas safe / corgi before we could get issue resolved elsewhere leaving us without heat and hot water. Wouldn't use them again.

Or indeed add this when you've already got the plumbing cover?

Our local HS unit (plumbing anyway) is a shambles. Seven weeks and five (staff, not indy) 'engineers' to sort a dripping tap!

Internal communications chaotic, turning up with wrong or no parts.

In all my life I've never had an electrical emergency and don't know anybody that has either...
Boilers break, pipes burst, etc..
But can't think of any frequently occuring wiring / electrical fault... Even for £1, this is something that I'd not have needed over past 2 decades.... Certainly, of a single socket stopped working, can't see how that'd constitute an emergency when there are many others to use.

They would replace faulty decorative sockets/switches (chrome etc)?

If light fittings have stopped working would they replace with a cheap pendant style fitting or a light fitting of similar style?

2 Mar 17 #58
Avoid these charlatans, the two times I've had the misfortune of dealing with them they tried every excuse under the sun not to do anything. Heating stopped working in middle of winter and gave the usual "we need to order the part and will be back in the morning",low and behold next morning got a call from their office saying the issue wasn't covered by policy.
Second time Transco had turned off gas due to a gas leak, guy turned up miserable as sin with no intention of doing anything....watched him make fictional phone calls and waste time and then trying to use the same old excuse "I need a part and will be back tomorrow", I had to step in and tell him no chance and what he needed to do else I'm phoning the office and insurer whilst he is on site, begrudgingly he applied the fix that I told him yet he made sure he was here for 2 hours.

Save your money folks and use it to hire somebody local.

I agree with post 46 and 47. I can understand why someone might take out gas cover or boiler cover, but electrics! When do you your electrics go wrong ? Anybody should know how to be able to replace a light fitting or socket, if they know how to rewire a plug. The chances of your electrics going wrong nowadays must be the same as winning the lottery.
I know in theory you are supposed to get someone qualified in for new installations, but replacing an existing socket or light fitting is simple. Most fuse boxes are circuit breakers nowadays so I just cannot see why anyone would take out electrical cover?

Have received very poor service from this company for my boiler. 90% of the engineers are cowboys!!!! Will use any excuse possible to not do any work. I am classed as a vulnerable customer and the earliest appointment available was after 5 working days. And the to be told part would not be available for another week!!!! Was left without heating and hot water in a house with two children under 2 years of age in temperatures falling below minus 3!!!! Engineers also state that they can only work on a breakdown for a maximum of 40 minutes. If no luck you have to rebook job which can be a week away. Have also had engineers blatantly lie and say they will be back with parts later in the day but then advise that they had never said this!!!!! DO NOT TRUST These cowboys with your heating. INCOMPETENT!!!!

I've had the £1 elec and plumbing cover before. Only used the plumbing cover once and that was for a leaking bath tap that was a nightmare to access (tiled bath panel). They came out and sorted no problem. My boiler is dropping pressure. I've resigned to admitting it's not a simple fix so just in Friday I took out the £10/month policy with the view to get them out to sort. I regret/glad I read this. If I call them out in 3months (its not urgent) and they say the boiler is old (which it is ~13years Ravenheat) and beyond economical repair will they let me cancel the remainder of the boiler and refund what I've paid? I've 14days to cancel... thanks.
