Halfords have slashed the price of their display model Garmin Sat Navs. Click and Collect only. Staff instore were not aware as they had reduced the items a couple of days ago, but they are now slashed and still on shelf at a higher price.
Examples, Garmin Drive 40 LM reduced from £100 to £45
Top of the range Drive Luxe 50 LMT reduced from £300 to £129
I opted for the Garmin Drive assist 50 with built in DashCam, full Euro mapping and lifetime updates reduced from £280 to £119.

As a generalisation I have to agree with that, although there are some who still prefer their dedicated GPS units.
It doesn't take much to search and find information to show how much Garmin and TomTom have been affected....
As a family we all used to have standalone GPS devices but now with Smartphones none of us are using anything other than those. Even the software doesn't have to be Sygic or iGo etc anymore . It can be the free Google maps with the map downloaded for offline use. Or even the free Here maps and software.

I do find I miss fewer turns with the resolution of my phone than with my Navigo V1. But you can guarantee that the once a month I need to use my phone to navigate somewhere, someone will call me at a critical point. Then there's the problem with my aged phone and charge cables falling out of the micro usb socket, 10 mins later the phones practically dead, OK if you spot it and there's somewhere to stop.

May you have more luck than I have with Garmin there very good if not excellent when working. My top of the range sat nav packed up 2 days after the makers warranty expired the seller had given me a two year warranty but you've guessed it he had already gone bust quicker than Garmin. Replacement cost £100+ so far so good.

19 Mar 17#47
Thanks Betty. Went and collected them both (1 hour collection). I ended up keeping the luxe although I wanted to keep the assist with cam. The assist with cam was in bad condition with glue all over the rear of the sat nav which had peeled off the outer coating and manufacture stickers. There was also glue on the top left of the screen (a considerable amount that couldn't be removed). The rear mount clip was missing also. On the other hand the luxe is immaculate, just with a minimal amount of glue on the back between the sat nav and magnetic mount, which covers the glue anyway. The Luxe has a better screen resolution and better whites. Also it has a slightly larger screen size. The metal casing feels nice to hold

Those of you who received the Garmin DriveLuxe, what did you receive in the box? I've only received the in-car charge plug/cable, a micro USB data cable, sat nav unit, magnetic mount and windscreen mount. I don't seem to have received the live traffic receiver? Am I meant to receive one or does the sat nav have the antenna/receiver built-in to the unit?
friendlyfire321
19 Mar 17#58
On most Garmins it is usually built into the in car charge cable but please check as I don't have this unit so cannot say for certain.
17_Canberra
19 Mar 17#59
On my unit the receiver is built into the unit. The in cable variety went out of fashion at least 3 years ago you should have a Manual explaining this if not download from the Garmin support page which is very useful as you can quickly find what your looking for using find/search the manual is also probably loaded in the unit go through the menu's.
Betty.Swollocks
19 Mar 171#60
No, the mount can be clipped in for top or bottom mounting. Top mount for the included screen mount or bottom mount for the friction pad.

20 Mar 17#61
I use a £34 phablet I bought off eBay a few years ago, with a windscreen holder, hard lob to find a decent one with a grip that is wide enough, and use Here maps off line which are upgradeable every so often for free, I add or subtract countries as required to keep the storage down. Find this better than my old TomTom and cheaper than my in car satnav. The problem with satnav mapping of any sort is that even though you get an update of the country as far as the satnav company is concerned it has the latest map info, the mapping agency of that country may not have updated their maps, so you get the same availability as 10 years ago. This is true of Spain mates so you also need a good sense of direction some times. Where there is a road under your wheels there is a field on your screen. This happens whatever the source of your navigation.
soldierboy001
20 Mar 17#62
Better whites and blacks, screen resolution???? What is this place coming too when those make the choice of a satnav decision a priority. As far as I can see, no satnav whether dedicated or phone app, has a picture that can't be successfully without saying oh my god the resolution, I'll never be able to find my way now.
TomBoyNI
20 Mar 17#63
You do realise that improvements happen?
Of course if you are looking at two items off a similar price then choosing the one that is more pleasing to eye makes perfect sense. Couple that with the fact that it was also the model in better cosmetic condition and all you have is the poster telling us why he chose one over the other.
Imagine what the world would be coming to if we didn't have progress. We wouldn't have retina displays, 4K, HD, 7.1 audio...
Anyway I hope you still successfully find your way, and keep the positive contributions flowing!
soldierboy001
20 Mar 17#64
Thanks TomBoy, but I did say that I have not seen a satnav that has not given a picture I could not navigate by.
17_Canberra
20 Mar 17#65
Your right the quality of the mapping is most important. I was once sent up an approach road to a block of flats on reaching the end there was a 20" drop + fence etc by the time I had retraced back to the road said sat nav had recalculated another duff route I ignored sat nav & drove around the block of flats which had been there forever. The best mapping I've come across was provided by ViaMichelin see their website but there sat navs couldn't survive a single journey without crashing and after care service was non existent. Garmin don't seem to have produced an update to their mapping for just on a year are they going bust? And all mapping of Spain is atrocious no matter who provides it.

When did I say that the resolution/screen factor was a priority when searching for a Sat nav? I was comparing 2 sat navs that were comparable and stating the obvious differences between them, nothing more. If you felt obliged to add your 2 penny's worth, I'd suggest not to make assumptions and read the facts.

Hassan/Soldierboy. Now Now boys before there's fisticuffs. professor.yaffle
22 Mar 171#86
You will need the car power lead to receive traffic info as the antenna is built in to it. The other items it comes with are the windscreen mount and a USB cable. I would find out how much these items would cost and try and knock them down a bit more, as its not just ex-display but also incomplete. Its a good device though.

Thank you so much op. Had email from TomTom recently offering me a supposedly special deal as my much-loved 10 yr old sat nav is obsolete and cannot be updated. Now I can answer my mobile hands-free via my sat nav!
Hassann

I'm interested in hearing the answers too... Not sure whether the traffic receiver is built in or not
hiralv
28 Mar 171#89
To clear up the issue.. the garmin units up to the drive luxe have the traffic stuff in the charger cable. If you get a mini usb lead and plug it in it wont work with traffic.
To test it plug the usb lead into a usb charger and go into the traffic settings it will say u have to use a specific traffic charger otherwise it wont work
katya1971 to hiralv

Yes i got a brand new boxed and accessories in their original packaging. The car charger has built-in traffic. The way to test it is by turning on the Garmin and on the menu, if traffic is not greyed out, it means it's active. If you remove the charger, the traffic button will no longer be 'clickable' if that makes sense.

That's the one i got, the DriveLuxe 50LMTD. Bluetooth isn't required for traffic, just the charger which has a built-in DAB receiver. Bluetooth can be used for making calls and some additional features like weather updates on the Garmin.
