I bought one of these from Gearbest in February. Took a while to get here but am very happy with the printer.
Didnt get charged for customs or any other charges. Think its pot luck and you might get stung if you are unlucky for an extra 20% or more.
Would not recommend this to anyone that is not prepared for some serious tinkering. And the first thing you should do is ditch the power supply as there are many reports of them failing in a cloud of smoke.
While you wait for your printer to arrive search out the official facebook support page for the Anet A8 and get prepared for all the things you will need to do to get this printer working really well.
If that sounds like crazy talk to you then this is not the printer for you - you will need to pay at least double to get something ready to go but thats why this one is so cheap.

A8 is the model number not the printing size. The bed is a good size (think its 220 x 220 x 240mm).

I bought one, arrived two weeks ago with no customs charge. In fact I have never paid any customs charge for purchases from Gearbest. I don't know if it's because I've been lucky, or whether they use some method to avoid this, such as artificially lowering the value on the shipping slip.

You may have to pay customs charges, you may not, its hit and miss if you do.
I paid £19 customs import duty this time but not last time when I bought something about the same value.

Great printer, most definitely not plug & play or for someone with no patience. Invest the time though and you get prints comparable with a machine 4 times the cost.
Price is pretty much average though, I paid that in January

save yourself a lot of needless stress and wasted money don't buy it, i is just a £132's worth of headaches
Depends what you want. If you want a printer ready to go without some extra work this is not what you want. But you won't find a printer this cheap or even close to this price that's going to be ready to go.
Also you can treat this as a learning experience. I learned a huge amount from building and improving this printer.

Make sure you select the right plug. I updated the plug on a media streamer purchase, switched currency and it reverted my plug to EU which I missed. I then had no end of problems with Gearbest just simply trying to get the PSU. After weeks of trying, the customer service was abysmal with endless excuses and I just accpeted a power adapter I did not want. I'm still irritated about this due to the poor customer service and wasted time. The adapter doesn't fit properly in my tv unit.

Tinkercad is really easy for a beginner. Solidworks would be the next step up from that. Either of those will be good places to start for creating models.
I use Slic3r Prusa Edition to slice but Cura is also very good.
Highly recommend seeking out the official anet a8 Facebook support page. There's a wealth of info there.

Sounds like a great tip about the Facebook page I have just been having a read there is some tinkering to be done. I've been tempted to get a 3d printer for a while how much would you say it would cost to get this working right from standard? Looking at the Facebook page some of the upgrades can be printed but some others need to be bought. Very tempted by this though, heat added.

24 Mar 171#20
I used a spare compote ATX power supply to replace the Chinese fire starter.
A mosfet for the heat bed is highly recommended. they are about £5 on gearbest or £10-15 from a uk supplier.
All they other upgrades are just to improve the quality or speed of the printer and can be done at leisure.
Another point of failure is the heat bed connector. I removed mine and soldered thicker wires directly to the bed.

Another option if you're really handy at diy is to build one from scratch. Thomas Sanladerer on YouTube is a really good place to start. He just completed something like a 12 hour total live stream building a prusa mk2 clone from cheap parts. Very steep learning curve but would end up with a good machine.
I would still recommend the Anet A8 as it can be made to be just as good.
That's the one I'm thinking off. But it will not be from GearBest. I had that "pleasure" of speaking with their customer support - never again. Even on Reddit the opinion is to buy it 20-30 pound more expensive from Ebay than have a chance to sort problem out over GearBest Customer Suport

I've also bought 4 CCTV cameras from Gearbest, but I ordered each one separately, just in case there was a customs charge. I know there is a £ limit under which there is no charge, and as Gearbest ship free, there was no disadvantage to ordering separately.

Solidworks is not something for beginners, nor is it cheap. Fusion 360 is similar but free from Autodesk.
I've also used Cura and its support-strut featuresare sub-par compared to something like Simplify3D. But Cura would be a good place to start until you get frustrated with the lack of control.
zzleezz
25 Mar 17#31
My mistake. Meant to say OnShape. Always getting those 2 confused.
Simplify3D has some neat features like the excellent support control but i personally don't think it's worth the very high price. Not sure paying almost as much for a slicer as my printer makes a whole lot of sense. The free slicers are just fine and in some ways even better. Slic3r just introduced variable layer height which for me is all sorts of amazing.

I used a good quality 600w atx psu but that does require some extra work to make it useable. Another diy option is an old xbox 360 power supply but that's even more shonky and depends on the model of the psu.
The psu that comes with the printer is 20a which is right on the limit. There are some available to buy that are 30a which would be fine. Have a search on the Anet a8 Facebook groups (there's 2 big groups now).

Hi all, thinking of buying my first 3D printer, how does this handle printing multi colour objects? does it support more than one spool of ABS filament or how does that work?
chickey999
28 Mar 17#37
With that build though he went for as cheap as possible which he admitted maybe actually comes out at more than the cheapest pre-built. I watched it and really enjoyed it but be mentioned on so many things why am i using this component rather than something which is known to be better and price was the thing every time. I think the A8 represents pretty good quality and you can print some good upgrades. The biggest worry is the powersupply and heated bed connections.

Find that hard to believe but to be honest most people just export the gcode to an SDcard and do it that way, you don't need your PC on all the time and it's more reliable in my experience. I wonder what they are trying to say isn't supported as the slicers are.

I'd avoid Gearbest. My order never showed up, they wanted me to pay a 50% surcharge to re-ship the item, but would not provide any proof of posting or tracking number to show that the item was ever actually dispatched. Aliexpress is normally competitive on price, and provides at least a rudimentary level of protection against fraudulent sellers.

These are meant to be quite good but the acrylic frame can be hit and miss. Sometimes quite fragile and brittle. Other times strong as an ox. It put me off pulling the trigger on it a few months back. If you are the type of person who wants a 3D printer kit and would be happy putting one together (This is in kit form), maybe consider building your own. There is a Youtuber https://www.youtube.com/user/ThomasSanladerer quite well regarded in the 3D printing community. He did a series of live builds using the same parts as this Prusa clone and got cracking results. You can find a BOM and instruction at https://toms3d.org/dolly - Hope this helps someone.

If you are interested in going even cheaper , check out the TronXY X1
zzleezz
28 Mar 17#48
The Tronxy X1 doesnt have a heated bed. That isnt a deal breaker but does mean you wont be able to print with ABS or PETG and even larger PLA items will struggle. Without keeping some heat in the part you are printing they tend to warp which on larger items is a real pain.
Before my Anet A8 I had a Colido Printrite DIY and that was fine (till the bearings wore out after 2 weeks) but I really struggled to print on it without a heated bed. Now I have one I print on glass at 55degrees with a little hairspray and have had almost perfect results.
The Tronxy is interesting though....

looks really tempting - I take on board that this is really a "starter" kit which probably needs a lot of work to get it working correctly - the phrase "you gets what you pays for" springs to mind
3d printing is one of those things I've often thought about, but in the absence of any specific projects in mind, it's something I'm going to leave 'on hold' for the moment, and possibly wait anther year or so until the apparent shortcomings are ironed out - eventually the major manufacturers will move in and provide something of a comparative price with half decent support - still voted hot.
GB Isn't perfect by any means, but any issues I've had have been sorted out reasonably quickly and amicably, they wouldn't be my first point of call for any technical support though - they try hard, very occasionally not quite hard enough, but always get there in the end.
