I've been holding out on buying an SSD for my build as prices have gone crazy lately. I know you could have found some better deals about a year ago, but this is the best price I've found on a 480/500 gig drive. I've read prices are expected to go up further still, this may well be the best price you'll find for a while.
Don't have much info on the drive itself. It's AMD branded but I believe they bought out OCZ.
Note, dispatch time quotes 1 to 2 months. I'm hoping to receive mine sooner, but if you're in a rush you might want to look elsewhere.
The R3 drives are manufactured by a contract maker and then distributed by Galt, the company that distributes AMD’s Radeon-branded memory modules.
The R3 is not a tosh/OCZ drive. Its basically a Crucial BX200 clone with lower binned NAND and probably not as good firmware. IE its TLC NAND with a SMI 2256 controller that is probably running 100% stock SMI firmware. Its 'made' by a firm that is not well known in the storage industry but approached AMD trying to get into it with the idea of adding to AMDs lineup at a lower price point than OCZ could offer. IE they are AMD board partner that are trying to get a toe hold in a new marketplace. IIRC just like OCZ they are turnkey operation for this drive in that AMD is basically just lending them their name (for a slice of the action). No idea on RMA, support, firmware, where they are sourcing their NAND, etc. Take all that for what you will. YMMV etc etc etc. Source

50% of the country thinking we'll be better off resorting to a form of self-colonial rule? :smirk:
Think I'll "pre-order" a couple to replace the hard drives in my Mac Pro.
Shows as an extra 10 for postage for me. So ends up being 20 more.
Not sure what your image is regarding? Ana amazon cancelation for a different item?

Its free postage for Royal Mail 2nd Class
Yes the email (image) is a different drive but it had a longer than usual expected delivery date which came and went & got extended until I finally got the email. In the meantime while I waited hopefully SSD prices went through the roof as you have noticed so waiting for a 'bargain' Amazon SSD device on a long expected delivery date has actually left me out of pocket. Hope yours does come but the alternative is pay a bit more now and definitely get it before (possibly) prices rise further.

Aha, I get ya. Well, all I can do is wait and hope.
For me, unfortunately, there's no free delivery on the one you linked as I'm in Ireland. Good deal if you can get free postage though.
Cheers

Glad I'm not in the market for a SSD, they were £75 for this size a year ago. I thought we'd be seeing a TB for around £100 now.

What's driving the upwards pricing of SSDs?
batlan to robjewitt
11 Mar 171#7
Memory chips. Same happened with Ram modules. Manufacturers cannot keep up with producing them and demand is to big so they almost doubled in price.

This article NAND price rise explains.
It's several factors as well as the pound drop.
Hopefully it's only temporary

Got a new Kingston 480gb SSDNow v300 yesterday for £100 delivered from eBay, tried to post but got deleted by mods because the seller is not suitable for hukd.
Seller still has 8 left but not sure if I'm allowed to post link...

Can you Pm me the link? I'd be curious.
I heard the v300 are the slowest ones you can get though.

The drives aren't even suitable for the UK - since Kingston switched the flash memory inside the drives for cheaper parts which perform at about half the speed of the originals without updating the specs or the marketing info, the drives have fallen foul of our legal requirement for goods to be sold As Described.

So much money for so little storage - like 4 new releases?

With solid-state, you're paying for performance above capacity. Stick with horse-drawn if you want 4TB for this money.

****! I checked some reviews and tests against the Sandisk plus which i could of got for an extra £15 at the time :disappointed: guess the reviews were from the older faster model.
Thanks for the heads up, a lesson learned.

It's obviously the weak £ against the $ and Euro. It's not just SSDs going up in price, everything is!
Seems it has been listed at this price since June last years according for price watching sites.

AMD bought out OCZ? Surely is that not a bad thing?

Figured it was related to recent economic turbulence. Just wanted to know if there was anything likely to change the prices and whether it's better to wait. Seems like these particular drives ain't worth the money anyway

Could somebody recommend a suitable replacement for me please?
My toshiba satellite has now had a complete hard drive failure. So will be upgrading to an SSD. Don't think i warrant a 480gb, maybe something a little less and around the £60-£70 mark. Been waiting for a good deal for a while now, closest I got was to the office outlet deal...

You could look at getting a SSHD. More capacity for less money.
If you're set on an SSD maybe have a look at some used / second hand offers. Should be able to find something online. I got a good deal on a 500gb Samsung Evo 850 recently, second hand.
Thank you so much vardx, just read up on them and sounds like something very suitable. I'll need to check the model no of my laptop first to make sure I get the right size one. Any brand recommendations?

No problem at all!
I don't have any first hand SSHD experience, but I've seen Seagate have a lot of competatively priced models on amazon with plenty of good reviews.
Regarding compatibility, based on what you've said so far, I think any 2.5" drive should work for you. You could also go for a mechanical drive. I recently installed a 1tb 2.5" 7200RPM Hitachi drive in my own laptop, alongside an SSD. Works very well and I got a great price on it, at just 38 pounds.

That's a really good tip. A 4TB hybrid drive is a better proposition for storing Steam libraries and such. Keep the smaller SSDs for system drives or for the AAA titles.
