Yes it's perfectly fine for you to use butane for your Weber BBQ.

Difference between propane and butane please? I could google that but I'm not after the chemical differences but rather the practical differences for domestic use.

Thats possible too...but if they charge a fee for the first bottle and then want to give you a MASSIVE reduction for the return of the bottle its no wonder they are not getting them back

Stupid question alert. We've got a Webber bbq which i tried to get a replacment cylinder for last year, the one I have is a 6.3kg propane but the local garage changed suppliers and the replacement cylinder I bought from the garage wasn't compatible with my attachment on the Webber, so I returned it and got my old empty cyclinder back which has been stuck in the garage.

So I assume i'd need some sort of adapter to run Butane on the Webber BBQ ? does anyone have any experience of this and which adapter I would need and is it ok to use butane instead of propane for a BBQ?

They are selling the right regulator on their site. Its a simple small jubilee clip to undo and redo with the new one.

If you read the small print, even if your bottles "qualify" you may not receive any credits if they don't feel like paying them to you - and they still get to keep your bottles, either way!

Ignore the people claiming you can use butane on a Weber gas BBQ, they are wrong.

Some charcoal Weber grills come with a butane gas ignition, but all of the gas grills are Propane only.

I use it my portable gas in the livin room well ventelated and carbon monoxide detector there's no heat like it

Different flow rates, different temperatures. Butane is pretty useless on a BBQ. It's cheap for a reason. It doesn't even make a good starter on my charcoal bbq as it doesn't work on colder days. Butane is only really good for indoor use.

Yes Butane burns at a lower temperature than propane, and yes it has a higher freezing point than propane, but is perfectly fine for use with a BBQ, Weber BBQ's included.

Really, it's not. Weber will indeed confirm, they no longer sell adapters for butane or natural gas.

Swapping the other way, i.e. using propane on a BBQ which the manufacturer recommends butane 'could' cause problems due to the higher burning temperature, causing damage to the ceramic burner etc. but as butane burns at a lower temperature theres no logical reason why butane wouldn't work perfectly fine on a BBQ which came with a propane regulator, very simple task to swap the regulator, I have done exactly this, albeit not a Weber BBQ as seen here

For a crappy gas burner, butane is OK in warm weather. For anything that deserves quality or precision outdoors, it's pretty useless.

I dont know how many times I need to explain, aside from the lower temperature, which most won't find as an issue, butane will work perfectly with a BBQ.

Butane burns hotter, so to get the same temperature you need to burn less gas. So the regulator has less pressure, which isn't enough to get to the end of a high flow gas burner. It will also blow out easier in a moderate wind. The pressure will get lower as you cook, due to the bottle getting colder and the gas liquefying.

It's harder to light, harder to keep lit and won't maintain a constant temperature. Everything you don't want in a cooking device.

If you only cook in hot, dry weather you don't need a 13kg bottle anyway - you'll die before it's empty.

Now I will intervene. In cold weather, the gas does not liquefy..the contents of the cylinder IS mainly liquid, with the space above being the room for the liquid to gas off. As it gets nearer to the point that it no longer boils off into gas, the pressure drops until, in the case of pure butane, at -1 degree it no longer boils off, so producing no gas. Butane does not freeze at this temp., it does not boil (like a kettle turning water to steam).

Indeed, I over simplified due to the reader failing to understand what I was trying to tell him.

However, Butane does indeed boil at -1C. Just like a cold kettle. When my butane ignition becomes useless on a cold day, I pour a jug of warm water over the bottle. You can hear it boil inside the container and, as if by magic, the gas starts coming out again. For a few minutes, until it cools down again and all the gas condenses once more and it becomes useless again. And you wish it was propane.

Still a fair bit cheaper than Calor.

ro53ben...It's funny because I have a Weber BBQ and have been using butane for the past 13 months. In that time I cook on it 2-3 a week (on average).
So I can comprehensively say that "YES" butane does work on BBQ's...and you are correct when you say butane is useless in very cold weather.

I've just sold an old 15kg butane bottle (weighed about 21kg) for £4.20 on eBay lol. Did loads of searches and it seemed as though you couldn't get a refund unless you had the original rental agreement.
