Sounds a bit peculiar but this app allows you to identify the tree by the leaf. Good for walks out with the kids in the countryside gives them something to do rather than look around and enjoy the great outdoors.

Tree identifier.....they are the big woody things growing out the ground! On a more serious note though, when I was a kid I knew all the trees in our woods by their leaves. Now kids couldn't identify one due to constant gaming and tech toys, really sad. I learnt so much about nature by the cards they put in tea packets. Now you get a plastic toy to bin after 10 minutes play.

We are in danger of knowledge too much: that there are seasons

Just chew the leaf. Works every time.

You may not have been typical, though. When I was kid, I knew all the utility boxes and poles in our streets by their colour and outline, but could not confidently identify any tree by any of its features. I wouldn't be surprised if urban kids now are actually better at naming trees than I and my contemporaries were.

In stealth mode it allows you to secretly identify a tree and then brag to your family your immense wealth of tree knowledge - Ray Mears/Steve Backshall (and that other fella) style :-) Heat and downloaded.
