"Nextbase 402G has just been awarded a Which? Best Buy..... 2014"
This one pokes the phone above the dash in my car for a good view of the road. Tilts back under heavy braking though so employed a couple of elastic bands ftom the bottom legs to paper clips bent around the lower vent fins. This is the instructables site isn't it?

I'm currently just using my phone, with a freebie app (iphone 6s and "Dashcam" app), in a landscape cradle...I'm using a clip on wide angle lens from eBay with it (few pounds)...I just clip the lens to the cradle when I leave the car...seems to offer most of the features of a dashcam and I'm not going to forget and leave it in the car. Maybe some of the people looking for a budget option in here might want to take a look at that option.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a car camera which has quick release but is also useful as a go pro style camera. On the budget side of things.

if you have a android phone you can get a OTG cable and theres a app and you can connect the camera and either set it up or view the camera throuh the phone. Im sure it exsists for apple aswell.
I dont have any knowledge of the nextbase but my mobius is tuck right behind the rear view mirror and its near impossible to see. my main worry was some scrot trying to take it so i would have to remove it each time. i also hardwired mine into the interior fuse board so i still have the cigarette lighter free, pretty easy job to do.

I think I would have to rule it out after watching this video (link below) earlier as it would seem it doesn't have enough (what I would call) dash cams features and that you need a PC to set it up,and I don't have a PC.
Mobius are popular for several reasons. Key selling points are:
- Compact 'match box' size
- High quality recording (1080p @ 60fps)
- Can accept memory cards upto 128GB (Dash cams usually only go upto 32Gb)
- Cost is quite low, and has same features as more expensive cams
- No screen (which is a plus for some, and a negative for others)
- Very versatile, replacement parts are easy to come by and add-on accessories are cheap on ebay
- General reports of good reliability - i can vouch for this.
After paying £150 for a nextbase 512G and £45 for a mobius, the mobius is by far better value.

You can get the highly praised A119 for 63 quid (ebay.com) similar price on Aliexpress... if you're willing to buy from china, more discreet when installed and better quality, 2k 30fps or 1080 60fps. Mine was actually dispatched from a UK, warehouse and arrived in 3 days.

I found the below website useful in deciding which dash cam is best for you. For example it says the gps feature could go against your claim if you were travelling even slightly above the speed limit.
+1 on that. And be aware that if Police are investigating an accident or suspect you of careless driving etc they are entitled to seize your dashcam and footage as evidence!

In all honesty, It's not worth the £80. The 402G is notorious for having really bad batteries. My one lasted not even a year, The Dashcam would cut off about 30 minutes into a journey and not record or turn on for the rest of it. - (This is both with it plugged in and charging with the 12V Socket and the hardwire kit.) I've traded mine in for a 412G as a replacement, Which so far is much; much better.

Not just 312 having battery issues. I had the flagship 512g unit, and the battery failed after 7 months.
It also had a nasty habit of locking up, and giving no indication that it was no longer recording other than the screen freezing.
Got fed up of it in the end and replaced it with a möbius. In my opinion, the möbius has superior picture quality and has proven itself to be more reliable than the nextbase.
So these apparently "number one" brand cameras are overpriced for what they are.
Biggunspaul to 118luke
2 Feb 171#45
Serious question, what is so good about this möbius camera as a dash camera over any other normal camera ? Does it have any dash cam features and does it come with mounts for fitting in windscreen ?
As from the link that has been put up it just looks like a basic camera and that's it,and the only reason it's so small is because it doesn't have a screen.
If the Nextbase battery fails on me I may just nail my DSLR to the dash and be done with it,maybe even strap my drone to the spoiler as rear view camera
Biggunspaul
2 Feb 17#44
Maybe they are all **** then.
Good job I've kept the receipt for mine, will just get a refund and buy something else if it starts to play up.

I can't make my mind up on whether to get a dashcam. A mate had his car broken into as he left the mount up & they took the camera which was in the glovebox. Not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of taking it down everytime
Biggunspaul to taker920
2 Feb 17#37
One way around that is to not leave it in your glove box and if you don't keep anything expensive in there then leave it open to show anyone looking that there is nothing worth taking.
Biggunspaul
2 Feb 17#35
But does it actually have any dash cam features ? If not then you may as well put a GoPro up in your windscreen and have a top quality image.
The whole point of a dash cam is that it records information such as -
Gps location
Speed
Time/date
Automatically saves video when there is an impact
Automatically starts and stops recording when the ignition is turned on/off

I didn't know that, although this is version 2. I'm not sure how long it's been out but I have a sat nav built into my Audi and have used both and not noticed any noise on playback. Picture quality is great and it's small. Horses for courses really. I just wanted something small and rechargeable which recorded my journeys.

Nothing wrong with a Mobius but it does not have a GPS, or any G sensor to know where you are and also to lock files in the event of a collision.
The Mobius also had a reputation for being a little noisy radio frequency wise and potentially upsetting GPS receivers but it was very close range, maybe 6 inchs at most, Not a big thing but if you have the camera by the mirror and the sat nav in the centre bottom of the screen it could be.
They may be better screened now, but a few drone fliers had issues do to the Mobius radio noise.

This particular model suffered from premature battery failure. But all dashcams that contain an internal battery will inevitably suffer battery failure within 18 months or so. The consequence is failure to save the vital video clip being recorded when external power is cut, the clip that would have proven you not guilty.
Much better to buy a dashcam that contains a capacitor instead of a battery, e.g. A119, Mobius, etc. My capacitor-equipped Mobius still works perfectly after more than 3 years of daily use.

Yeah I mentioned that in my comment above. I sent them a video that hasn't been posted up on their website/Vimeo page yet, and thought it might have to go through a few specific hoops to qualify for the free case, but mine arrived yesterday, less than a week after submitting my video.

I have the 312gw and so far so good. It's not hard-wired in but the power cable was long enough for me to plug it into the lighter socket in the boot and run it tucked behind the trim all the way to the windscreen, so it's fairly unobtrusive.
Only issue is that my car supplies power to the lighter sockets even when the car is turned off and locked, so I have to remember to turn the camera off and on manually if I leave it in the car (which I do most of the time when it's in safe locations). On the few occasions I have forgotten (inlcuding once overnight), it hasn't run the car battery down yet but does anyone know how long it would take to do?

i'd love to find this deal too...don't fancy referbished.
Far as I can tell the quality looks a little better on the 402. But the 312gw comes with the benefit of easily removing the camera when not in use. I'm not sure how likely it is people breaking in to cars to steal dashcams?
312 you can also wirelessly upload to your phone, which you can't with the other.
Anybody had any experience with the 212?

I picked up a grade B 312gw from eBay for £49 and it's pretty much as new, only a very slight mark on the screen that is barely noticeable.
The magnetic mount feature is good for removing it out of the car, would certainly recommend it.

I wanted a small inexpensive rechargeable camera for my new car. One which didn't have a cable running to the 12v socket. Another member on here recommended a Mobius. It's the size of a box of matches and costs £60. You can adapt it to your wishes with inexpensive add ons too. I've just got mine and I'm really pleased with it and it's and hardly noticeable. I bought mine here...
Sorry to crash your post OP not voted either way. Just thought I'd mention this as was perfect for me and I'd never heard of Mobius before.

They had a huge issue with battery failures. Try to ensure you get one with a serial number starting 16 to avoid the problem. I went through four before getting a good one and the serial number info came from Nextbase when I started complaining.

I had an early serial numbered one of the 402G's and my battery died.
I contacted Nextbase and was given the option of returning to them so they could replace the battery FOC or, the option I chose, to get a replacement battery to swap myself.
It's not that difficult if you have a bit of soldering experience!
I actually got Nextbase to send me two batteries so I had a second spare....

Do you have your 312gw hard wired into the car ? I hardwirded mine in the other day so now I shouldn't have to take the whole camera and mount down, just remove the camera.
edd13
1 Feb 17#10
yes, unfortunately some cars have a reflective dashboard and on a sunny day the dashcam will not see through. A circular polarizing filter helps reduce the reflections. There are magnet based ones where you stick a metal ring around the lens and the filter has a magnet. They are usually made for compact cameras but can be used for dashcams as well. Just google: Magnetic GGS KIT

You are right, I also can confirm that 312gw is working properly as I am using it now. On my 402G I was getting corrupted files, I am not sure if that was caused by the battery. I will replace it with a capacitor when I have time and I will see. Anyway I got my 312gw from PCW with 3 years of extra cover.
Biggunspaul
