I've been waiting to grab one of these

I'll be throwing it in a cheap h110m motherboard I picked up ages ago for £20 (used my 6600k to update the bios)

And just got 8gb of ddr4 from ocuk for peanuts

Probably throw a 750ti I have lying around in too

You may be right that the T version does not gain much in idle, but the non T equivalent of the g4600t is the g4600 not the G4400, and that's about £10 DEARER than the g4600t at the moment. So if you want a slightly faster cpu with higher power consumption for slightly more money that's the choice.....

Has anyone used this processor with Kodi and got perfect 24fps (23.976) playback?

This looks like a cheap way of upgrading my HTPC for future 4K use as an alternative to the Nvidia Shield or Odroid C2 etc.

6 Feb 17 #120
Thanks for repeating what I've just said - each has their own uses and merits. Minecraft? I don't really play computer games, and if I do a browser game is sufficient. I could run Crysis 3 on max, but who cares? And why would you own 6 gaming rigs when you only have one pair of eyes?

128GB is very useful for many tasks when you are working with data. As you are only playing games you don't seem to understand this. We max out memory on most boxes at work. Servers often have way more (768GB+). Again, that's a different use case.
jomay
6 Feb 17 #119
Oh these endless console vs. PC fights are simply stupid and pointless.

Can you stick 128GB RAM into your PS4? No? Well... then you cannot do everything I can do with my PC. Bad luck, you'll never analyse a large data set on a PS4. But it also wasn't designed for that. And that's the point - PC vs. PS4 have different use cases and customers.

Hello again Wotan and thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm a bit confused, my various posts have mentioned that it's going to be a better than basic office machine, no games, on-board graphics for 2 screens, 6 SATA (excluding M2), 12+ mix of USB3 and 2 and an ATX sized board; what did I forget please?
Wotan
6 Feb 17 #115
Would be a bit difficult because nobody has your exact requirements.

I've just put together an office PC with this and the gigabyte H110-S2H. Very please with the end result but the mobo only has 4 Sata ports do would be useless for you.

They fixed the issues with the "heat" by putting ventilation at the top

This case is perfectly fine for the components we're talking about

This processor and a 1050ti produce a minimal amount of heat

6 Feb 17 #112
Review for the case

Not enough space and not enough cooling

This review is from: RAIJINTEK METIS Aluminum M-ITX Case, USB 3.0* 2, Compatible with Standard ATX Power Supply, 170mm VGA Card Length, 160mm CPU Cooler Height, 120mm Performing Fan Pre-Installed, 7 Colors Option - Red

Pros: - Small
-Stylish

Cons: - Space. Okay, it indicates it can suck in standard ATX PSU, but I'm having trouble to squeeze in my ATX PSU or SFX PSU, without pressing my GPU backplate. The PSU cables not just touch, but It actually presses my GPU to inclined. In the long run, the power cables or GPU, one of them must be damaged because of the pressing. ( Right now, because I had to squeeze the PSU in, the cable alright shows sign of wears, hope Newegg won't charge me for RMA)

- Air flow. Don't buy this case ever if you're running a long video card. I have a 10'5 long RX 480. So I can only fit this in by removing back panel first. It's okay though. However, Due to lack of top air offtake, as well as it expand the whole case thoroughly, the video card stucks in it's own heat. How serious about it? Constantly up to 80 degrees while I was playing overwatch, then frozen and shut down. Now I'm waiting TT V1 case and open the side panel so at least I don't experience High Temperature Shut Down anymore.

-No cable management space.

Other Thoughts: It's my first time build a mini-itx system. (I only play Overwatch with 144hz monitor, I thought mini-itx with moderate specs should works just fine) It's awful. So many "gotcha" that I was not prepared. I just wanna say, if you're planing a high performance mini-itx build, make sure you put cooling top propriety. The design of the case will be the most critical.

+1.
I was going to mention that for media duties without a dGPU (and for light gaming with the iGPU) , it may be worth paying a bit more for the Kaby Lake Pentiums with HD630 rather than the HD610 ones like this.
According the Wikipedia list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_microprocessors#Kaby_Lake_based_Pentiums
The G4600, G4620, and G4600T have HD630 with the G4600T having the lowest list price ($75 vs $64 for this G4560). The G4600T does lose a fair bit of speed though being only 3GHz vs 3.6GHz for the G4600 non-T.
Worth remembering the TDP is not quite the same as the actual wattage consumed with Computerbase finding the whole platform at the mains using a max of 57W during the Prime95+AVX tests. Since idle was 34W, that's a delta of only 23W. Point being, that it is often possible to undervolt normal CPUs and that 'T' models are not necessarily that well binned (although haven't see or looked for any T reviews).
jomay
5 Feb 17 #78
Very silly argument. I'm now tempted to say this: a PC and a PS4 are both Turing complete machines and hence equivalent. :P

And given enough time it is possible to write an emulator that runs PS4 code on the PC natively and even with good framerates. PC and PS4 main CPU should even be binary compatible as both implement the x86-64 ISA. In fact, Sony may HAVE a (slow?) PC-based PS4 emulator so they can develop/debug their OS on a PC. Or would you want to write OS-level software on a PS4?

HEVC encoding performance on handbrake is poor because only the i3 or above have AVX/AVX2 extensions which makes the difference for that particular software.

However decoding (playback) is different. Kaby Lake processors have full 10 bit HEVC hardware acceleration so you shouldn't have problems. If you happen to pair it also with a modern GPU (e.g GTX950 or newer) then said modern GPU will also have powerful HEVC hardware acceleration too.

You have to accept the world does not revolve around the small minority of gamers. Most people just use PCs to run spreadsheets, browse the web, watch netflix etc. I've got Pentium AE IGP linked to 3 monitors, 8GB Ram and SSD.

480 much better, but depends on your power supply, whether you're bothered about heat and noise output and space.

1050ti is aimed at those like me with a HTPC so can't have a noisy 150w card blasting out heat, or I have a quiet low powered PSU. If you're rocking a 500w psu or above and space is no concern then get the 480, £169 is a bargain.

For those who don't like youtube and prefer to read articles, Digital Foundry = Eurogamer.net:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-intel-pentium-g4560-budget-cpu-king-review
Other articles include:
https://www.computerbase.de/2017-01/intel-pentium-g4560-test-kaby-lake/3/
However, both of those suffer from one major problem: no min frames. Average FPS is all very well, but any bottleneck of this is way more likely to show up in min frame times. Couldn't find any reviews which included min frames or better yet frame time graphs.

Hm, while does indeed appear to be far cheaper than any other UK retailer, Skinflint does list a fair few under £60 in Germany and Austria:
http://skinflint.co.uk/intel-pentium-g4560-bx80677g4560-a1558362.html?t=alle&plz=&va=b&vl=uk&hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu&v=e&togglecountry=set#filterform
Of course, not worth it once postage is factored in, but Amazon do have it for £61.13

EDIT: and for anyone with free postage from Scan (regular Hexus or AVForums posters), they have it (on pre-order) for £57:

It's a champ not least because of the upgrade path.

Buying a new AMD system is pretty much entirely pointless at this stage as intel own the whole market since this released, and edged out the FX6300. Ryzen seems only high end to start as well, it could be 6 months before there is any real response at the budget level from AMD.

bt shop are not good for pc bits, they offer things at a great price then tell you they can't supply them.
Noclouds
4 Feb 17 #24
A great price, most vendors have it between £65 and £70. I have my doubts that BT will deliver but worth a punt, perhaps. In certain situations with certain ram pairings the G4560 can, in a lot of games, match an i3 6100, which is extraordinary considering the price differential. For some productivity programs, an i3 performs better. For some reason, as compared with i3 and i5 offerings, the dual core/hyperthreaded G4560 pairs better with budget Nvidia offerings in intense action sequences than budget AMD (in many of the DX11 titles where Nvidia has an edge over AMD, it seems to be particularly so with the G4560, where in DX12 and Vulcan supported games, the AMD graphics card is often a stronger performer, even with the G4560).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-aP0JqJkJ0

To put things in perspective, the new hyper threaded Pentium part falls well short of the current generation unlocked K-series Intel CPUs (in games where the CPU is the bottleneck; in games where paired with a cheap GTX 1050 TI, the differences between the hyper threaded G4560 and the i5 and i7 are small in the reviews that I have seen; Richard of Digitalfoundry often tests CPUs with a Titan graphics card to remove the GPU as a bottleneck, and there the differences in CPU performance is often significant).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtpSiYFFjbI

But it does give you an easy upgrade path at a later date.

Here is a test on Hardware Unboxed that shows minimum frame rates across a variety of graphics cards at different price points paired with the G4560, across a number of recent gaming titles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUapuF0y30s&t=4s

Anyway, I don't know how long it will remain at that price, assuming BT honour it, but meantime, a cracking buy for a budget build with one of the new motherboards that supports Kaby Lake (most older 1151 motherboards will require a bios update to support Kaby Lake), have some more heat!

Some older boards can be flashed via USB without a cpu needed so worth checking before you buy
Gkains to emodan
4 Feb 17 1 #8
AFAIK only very few boards support this as the feature needs a custom chip able to init USB and do the flashing without a CPU. Only some very end Asus ("USB BIOS Flashback") and Gigabyte ("Q-Flash Plus") boards support this I think and no MSI or ASRock do.

It's a great feature that's sadly quite rare. It's mostly expensive ones that can do this.

Many thanks. That isn't just a beautiful case it is also cheap as well...!

Not too sure about the on bird graphics though

If you're just going to be using the on bird graphics I would really recommend the raijintek metis case... I think it's beautiful and it's tiny

Thanks

I had seen the Thermaltake Core V1 Mini ITX Cube Case with Fan for less than £38 and it looks to be a pretty good case, if you like the cube style over the upright tower.
The ITX boards do seem to cost a little more over the MATX but equally I do not need the expansion offered by the larger board.
If I do decide to go for a HTPC using this CPU then the onboard GPU should be fine.

Thinking about updating our ageing Phenom X4 970 box for a while, now. Was hoping the lower end would have a bit more oomph after seven years.

Great buy for a budget gaming pc, though.

I have been eying this Pentium up for a while and although it might be overkill just for a pfsense box, as it supports AES hardware encryption for a VPN client, at the price it is (at least £10 cheaper than elsewhere) it is a cracking buy..!

Then again I might build a HTPC with it.

Well found OP and ordered, 13 left at the time I had bought mine.

My Asus Sabertooth S Z170 board, with my 6700k, supports that Asus flashback and it would be great if that would be a std feature on all boards. I do not fancy having to strip out my 6700k just to enable a M-ATX or ITX board to boot to be able to flash it to support this CPU. I might end up being lazy and just buy a H270 board, but there goes my savings on this CPU if I do....!

Can't decide on whether to go M-ATX or ITX, not built and ITX before.

Any cheap (but reliable like Crucial) DDR4 (8GB) going...?

I only ever buy matx boards now... some of the matx boards with 3 pci slots actually fit in some itx cases. They're called flex-atx boards I think.

I like the lian li itx cases or the raijintek metis

Got a budget of about £250 for mini atx motherboard, some ram and a cpu and was looking at these lower priced chips from Intel but with AMD about to release Ryzen I'm not sure I should hold off and see what they bring to the table.
Still running a quad core 9550 from 2009 so any current chip is going to be a marked improvement but I wish AMD would pull their finger out so I knew which way to jump.

Great deal, got one a week ago for a htpc setup with a 1050 and so far its been great

I feel a touch guilty I have to admit as I bought a cheap G3900 to flash the bios on the H110itx and then sent it back

How does this compare to an old i5 2500k?
babswatkins to Naith
4 Feb 17 #10
It's on par with it at stock speeds... if you have a 2500k there is no reason to upgrade

I really wish I had my old 2500k still managed to get up to 4.8ghz stable

Great price, nearly as good as an i3 6300 and half the price, perfect for a decent PC for most daily tasks.

Great value CPU. It's very nearly a i3 for a lot less money. First Pentium in a long time to get Hyper Threading, which can make a big difference in some situations. I've got one in an B150 ITX build. As mentioned by the OP, you'll need a BIOS update to use this on a Skylake motherboard.

I'm still using a Q9300. This processor is cheap enough, but would cost too much for board and memory to justify...rarely use my desktops now. Tend to use laptop for windows and Rpi for everything else.

Have dual DVB S2 tuner in desktop...but not really used due to lack of integrated software (no windows media centre) in Windows 10.

Exactly my thoughts... was going for £65 before from most retailers and it's the cheapest delivered price

A used i3 6100 still costs more than this with pretty much identical performance
