Not so, perhaps you want to make a bigger purchase, and need the item just now, kitchen, bathroom, even a car, whatever, this allows you to make that purchase and not be hammered with the high apr of a loan or car finance.

If you're sensible you can put purchases onto such cards and earn interest on the money you would otherwise have going straight out of your account.
These cards are great as an interest free repayment option for big purchases.

Trouble with these deals is they encourage people to take out more debt. OK if you're strong willed/sensible enough not to get carried away otherwise clear your credit card monthly.

financing a large purchase is one thing and yes, i agree, cards are useful then. But all too often they are used to clear outstanding debts elsewhere and then the debts will be built up again. I've seen it happen many times.
MRGRINGO
14 Feb 17 3 #11
yeah for sure. but with a promise of 30months of interest free purchases its aimed at people who will gain debt...not putting the monthly shopping and fuel on then paying it off at the end of the month. its tailored to encourage debt, not to spend wisely.

How people choose to spend on their own personal credit card is their prerogative, the fact they can do so on this one without incurring any interest for 2 and half years, is got to be a good thing.

if you have a revolut card you can transfer upto £10,000 onto it for a 1% fee and then transfer it to your bank account for free. £100 fee for £10,000 withdrawal is pretty good.

Great deal for those who are resposible. But in my opinion products like these are what will make the economy & an entire generation go belly up one day. For every person who uses it & pays it off to save a little, there is a person who gets carried away ,ends up with a decade of debt & a marred credit record.

I've taken out 0% credit cards and borrowed four grand two times in 4 years which was 0% for two years. Both times I've paid my debt off within a year.

You just have to be a responsible borrower and try to pay off the debt early.

Sadly I have given up trying to benift from these kind of cards. While the headline figure of 30 months looks great they only offer figures around £5k (your luck may vary). That's less than £167 per month to spend. Looking at my last 12 normal months (excluding Dec) I avarage just over £900 a month. So in reality I'd need a minimum of £27k to make it worth while. At 5k it's not only paying off the minimum each month it will be keeping track of not going over the limit. Or spend as normal and put the card away after 5 months.

When you have no outstanding debt and with interest on savings so low it's hardly worth the effort flipping credit cards.
markda2000
15 Feb 17 #37
Exactly my point

The rate entices you in but if you don't get it as you have already been credit checked it will reduce your chances of being accepted elsewhere.
I don't think they should be allowed to offer a card with a variable, as it is the rates that are the differentiator in buying decisions.

I'd say the opposite. The inflationary genie is out the bottle. You can't print £trillions via QE and not devalue the currency. I've loaded up on low interest long term debt. Once inflation fully kicks in, the repayments in 10 years time will be minimal.

Just my opinion and experience for what its worth

I currently have about £20,000 of credit card 'debt' all at 0%, i also have an account with £20,000 in it earning interest, OK not much interest but its better than nothing. Over the years my level,of credit card debt has varied from £0 to £25,000 depending on the offers available but i have never paid interest and very rarely balance transfer fees (only when cash back or available interest outweighed the charge). I dont know how much i have benefited but i know it is a significant sum.
These cards are not a fantastic short term deal and certainly not a cure to financial woes but used over time can make a difference but you do have to be organised and diciplined to make them work.

Common misconception.

If you juggle your finances correctly, you can actually make money with credit cards. (not to mention the security when paying by CC)
Curlyman83
15 Feb 17 4 #50

Why get a £5k loan over 36months and pay 5% (or likely much more) interest, when you can simply use this card and pay none?

HantsShopper
15 Feb 17 #56
Not at all. Just pointing out that it doesn't suit everybody as many are not disciplined enough to manage these incentives properly and can easily get out of their depth. Oh - and guess what - that's when the bank will offer you a remortgage to consolidate all your debt or a personal loan at a higher rate to help you out of the problem they helped you create in the first place. It suits some but not others and it is something folks who are not financially astute need to consider.

I like Turkey at the moment. The currency has been hammered so the exchange rate is good. I'm hopeful of making some profits on the GBP/TRY rate once it corrects.

TEB Bank (http://www.teb-kos.com) will open accounts for UK residents. However, I'd go with HSBC as they are "too big to fail" and I bank with them in the UK which makes the account opening process just that little bit easier.

My current preference is the Annual Time Deposit (http://www.hsbc.com.tr/eng/retail_banking/interest_rates_and_fees/interest_rates.asp#id3) which pays 5.5%.

Indonesia and Vietnam currently pay around the same. If you are feeling really adventurous/deranged you can shoot for the stars with the National Bank of Egypt (http://www.nbe.com.eg). I believe they are offering 10%. Not sure if you can open an account from abroad though, you might have to visit a branch. Not something that interests me though. There's a good reason Egypt is having to pay 10% on deposits! The country's risk profile doesn't fit with my aims so they ain't on my list.

Have a Google around and you'll find a load of info. Make sure you understand it all though before you dive in. It's not complicated but you need to be aware of the UK tax liabilities etc.

Best of luck.

Credit building wise as long as your making at least minimum payment, your building your score up. Making full payment every month shows the next lender that you have ample cash and can afford bigger commitment in future. As far as I think, this only comes into play if you make a heavy application such as mortgage or large amount of personal loan or in other words where your application is more manually checked. Minor card applications are almost all automated and just picks your monthly payment being made or not.

Can anyone give me some advice regarding this. I have never had a credit card but have recently become interested because of the additional protection you get when paying for things on credit card, i.e. chargeback features. I would NEVER want to pay interest on it and would always pay it off before I owe any interest, but how does it work? When do I get charged interest, when do I pay off the balance? What other benefits are there with paying by credit card? Can you use it when you buy anything?

Like others have said I have always just saved up for things I want, but recently I started to invest my spare money as there is no point it being in a bank for next to no interest.
From_the_Midlands
16 Feb 17 1 #127
Best bet is to get a card that allows you to transfer money to bank account. Most lenders won't let you pay off loan with a credit card or will charge you some percentage if paying off with credit card. If you get a card that allows you to transfer money to bank account with low transfer fee and interest free period then you'll definitely save money/interest as compared to your personal loan.
From_the_Midlands
16 Feb 17 #128
If you never want to pay interest then get a card and straight away setup direct debit full payment.
The benefits of credit card are: you'll have more number of days to payback.
You'll have protection such as charge back.
You'll have cash in hand.
It'll build your credit report positively.

The way credit card works is if you only use it for purchases (e.g shopping at supermarket, petrol, cafe etc) then at the end of your statement period/month you'll be given total balance for that period/month and you will be given a due date. If you pay off the balance in full by due date you won't have any interest to pay.
Example, your card period/month starts from 1st April and finishes on 30th April then your due date will likely to be on 15th May. If you pay full either by full direct debit or paying complete balance in part until 15th May, you won't pay any interest.

Remember, cash like transactions i.e. Gambling etc won't be treated as purchases. They'll be treated as if you took cash from your credit card and you will pay interest in those transactions, usually on daily basis until repaid.

AA Dual is better than this. Granted it is 28 months instead of 30 months but you have the potential to get £75 in cashback. I got one a month ago and the £40 TCB has already been confirmed. Then fingers crossed imight also get the £35 from AA themselves after spending £500 in the first two months.

Considering they only gave me 18months and 900£, at which point this is basically pointless.
Can I cancel it, even though they're going to send me the card in next few days, will it affect my credit rating?
cliosport65
16 Feb 17 #133
yes it will affect your credit rating as it has already been scored  £900 is £900 still a fair bit of money
qalih
16 Feb 17 #134
I wanted to split a few large payments on a cc, £900 is not worth making the effort to use another card, just adds an extra step it will be easier to pay with my debit card. Oh well, will probably need to use it for a bit and cancel after few months. Gonna put a reminder in the calendar for 6 months from now to cancel.

16 Feb 17 #135
Never had a credit card before, I have applied been accepted for £1200... But can someone confirm some things.

If I don't use the card ever, do I have any fees?
If I cancel the card after interest free period is over, does this affect your credit score?
What is the monthly min payment set at?
zippypants
16 Feb 17 2 #136
Spending on a 0% card and managing the debt.

1. Decide what purchases you want to make and what you can afford to pay back monthly to the service the debt.
2. Once you have a figure you can manage.. Eg £6000 divide £6000 by 30 = £200
3. Set up direct debit to pay back £200 per month over 30 months.
4. Get a pair of scissors and cut up the card (so you won't be tempted to spend)
5. Sit back and enjoy your purchases knowing that it has cost you nothing in interest

I doubt it matters all that much when your credit rating is that high

I doubt there's anyone who would accept you at 999 that wouldn't at 903

Been offered £2800 for 30 months, very happy. Ideal for putting my car insurance on and the odd few bits.

Or use it to pay your car insurance and tax on, rather than paying for it monthly and absorbing massive interest cost.

bigweapon07

30 months to save up and buy something then enjoy it or buy it now at someone elses expense and enjoy it for 30 months with the exact same outcome at the very end. This guy obviously pays his council tax in full at the beginning of the year

Does anyone know if after getting the card you have to make purchases within a set time to qualify for the 0%?

Yes I did it as a balance transfer of 2K from Credit card to revolut to bank to credit card
faddy54
18 Feb 17 1 #159
So in effect making it a 0% balance transfer card with a 1% fee. I wonder whether banks are more (or less, or the same) generous with credit limits on 0% purchase cards than on balance transfer cards.

just did a house refurb. took 3 interest free credit cards. kept my savings as would have had to pay penalty to use them. will let savings mature then when out of the penalty period in 2 years will release savings and pay off credit cards. plus got cash back.
Yes you have to be careful but if used correctly these credit cards are great

Not sure if this has been overlooked, but in reality its not 30 months interest free, this is the hook they use to pull you in. I looked into this but read the conditions and it seems you have to clear you balance every month to stop any interest being charged.
Maximum 56 days for purchases if you pay your balance in full (including any balance transfers and money transfers) by the payment due date and you also paid your previous month's balance in full by the due date.

so good luck if you have applied for one
Ashe
19 Feb 17 2 #168
Yes, but the interest being charged will be at a rate of 0% for 30 months.

So in theory I don't need a credit card, but since I go holidays few times a year and a hire a car they always ask for credit card for deposit over debit card and it's not negotiable, and in such cases I have to pay for extra insurance just because I don't have credit card for deposit. Is worth getting this if I am practically using it 3 times a year for like 1K deposit each which is just frozen and unfrozen upon car return? (Fees-wise and what not)
morgie
20 Feb 17 2 #181
You'd be better off with the Clarity card - http://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/clarity-card/ - fee free abroad, in case you ever were charged or wanted to use it on other purchases during your holidays, or at home.

Heated by the way. Great to combine with some of the rare, but better, current accounts. Hopefully Tesco re-open the applications for their 3% account (on up to £3k, 2 accounts allowed) - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/tesco-current-account-pays-3-aer-savings-balances-up-3-000-guaranteed-from-april-2613103 May as well let your money work for the 30 months and then pay off the card with it.

I have been using 2 cards like this for a while with my Tesco card on 21 months interest free on purchases. i have another MBNA coming to an end soon owing around 2k but have it saved anyway - yes you do need to be careful but if can, then they are great! - You could also help a friend out like I have by lending them some of your saved money, they pay you back when your card is due (with interest in my case so I earn more than banks give but less than my mate can get a loan, so we are both happy!) Win! Win!

21 Feb 17 #186
sainsburys are doing 29 months on purchases also, (2-3% Cash Advance / Balance transfers)
for those who may want to avoid halifax. simple application too.

to keep the promotion you must repay 2.25% of the balance monthly by the due date (or £5 if you are nearly paid off)

Halifax Minimum payment is actually better
"An amount equal to the total of interest, default charges and 1% of the balance shown in your statement (minimum £5, or the full balance if less than £5)"
