A few nice buildings in Sofia , but not a great city. Central railway station to be avoided & pray you don't need a toilet whilst out & about. Give the zoo a miss at all costs unless seeing extremely depressed animals waiting to die floats your boat.

I agree. When flying with low-cost airlines you just have to know what you're getting... a flight from point a to b. Want something else? Pay for it. Quite a few folks tend to expect a first class service when they paid 10 quid for a flight.

Best of the no-frills IMO. Not so bad when things go wrong too.

Been to Sofia. Not a fan. Prefer their Romanian neighbours in Bucharest.

If you thought that there was no airline worse than Ryanair.... you were wrong !!!

Really? We've flown with Wizzair half a dozen times and they've been great. Onboard no-frills service, but the bar and snacks are a bargain compared to most airlines. The staff tend to be much friendlier if you're friendly to them to begin with!
Saying that, we've flown Ryanair dozens of times too and never had any major complaints there either. In fact I've never had any real problems with any airline except one single instance with American Airlines.

First day in Sofia (vitosha) there was a woman trying to pickpocket from my sister in H&M. Just be careful and keep your bags close to you...(as with any country)

Think of all those lucky people in Sofia who can FINALLY go and spend a week on holiday in Doncaster thanks to these cheap fares ! If they are feeling particularly adventurous and want to explore some local exotic locations they could even venture to Barnsley, Rotherham, Grimsby or Clethorpes! All close by...

Yes, they make some revenue from landing fees but tiny amounts, and nowhere near enough to cover the costs of the flight using the airport. Don't even think Doncaster breaks even yet, it's only been open 12 years. Wizzair passengers, in general, are very low spenders in the terminal on food, duty free and parking.

Airlines pays less fees when they fly to smaller airports that's why they can offer these very low prices. Sometimes it's the airport that has to pay the airline just to make them fly there to attract tourist (money). Ryanair is known to threaten airports that they'll either close the base or lower the amount of flights which of course will affect the economy of the country.

They do make money from flights
They make more money from whatever else
Greed and profit maximisation is taking them to the next level and they are all playing the same game since there aren't many new airports popping up
They are making us cough up money because of this situation

Wish that parking in Doncaster wasn't so expensive..

I'm quite sympathetic to be honest - airports don't make money from the flights, but from the car parking and money people spend in the restaurants and shops. Massive overheads, many you wouldn't think about like air traffic control, engineers, dozens of firemen, dozens of security staff, as well as the obvious check-in and handling agents.

Didn't think much to Sofia, but driving out to the Rhodope mountains was fantastic - like stepping back in time. Weather might be a bit treacherous in March though...

Brilliant city. Cheap to eat and drink and very safe. Some brilliant pubs and great cafes. If you get the chance take the train to Plovdiv which takes just over 3 hours and have a night or two there. Nicer than Sofia and more civilised.
