We have a set of these. The only people who can call us are those whose numbers we have pre-programmed. Everyone else has to identify themselves, then the phone will ring us to find out if we want to speak to the person. We can allow the call, send it to answerphone or block it. No nuisance calls, or unwanted calls, have got through since we bought these phones.

Call blockers are now useless, because spammers spoof the Caller ID system, which is a very poorly devised system with entirely inadequate levels of security. I have a CPR Call Blocker which is entirely useless for the function to which it's employed - blocking spam calls. The reason for this is that a single spammer can change their telephone number every time they call you and there's nothing you can do about it, if you block the number the next call they make will be using a different number anyway so they'll still get through.
Here's a free advert for CPR Call blockers of which I have one, they're absolutely useless >
Notice how they don't advertise that they can block Spoofed ID calls, that's because they can't and any spammer worth their weight in spam will be spoofing numbers now as they will get through. You'd need BT Call Guardian or similar system to stop them, but then you might as well not have a telephone as no one will want to phone you anyway.

The only people I find less likely with the Call Guardian system are cold callers, friends and family actually phone the landline more often now with the Call Guardian system as they go straight through and we make an effort to answer it. Before there were so many cold callers that it wasn't worth answering the phone for and genuine callers would probably leave a message. Callers who aren't on the system but genuine go through the Call Guardian system without issue.

If this is the phone I think it is, take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVHcNZGGLi0
Basically, you get a "middle man", and the spammers/cold callers know this and just move on
