Just a heards up - I spotted this thread only yesterday and immediately joined the VIP club - called up my local Richer Sounds and they had one left in stock - long story short but they were willing to honour the VIP deal "even though its not showing on our systems" - no doubt probably because it's amost four months old! Went and picked it up this lunchtime - thanks to the OP!

Bit of a novice here and think I know the answer to this question, but thought I'd ask the experts in this thread.
I have a wall mounted TV with the cables plastered in the wall. Foolishly, I didn't put an optical out cable from the TV to where the amp would sits. To use the TVs native smart features and benefit from the 5.1 sound output, could I plug the HDMI from the TV into the HDMI input from the amp? I thought I read somewhere that HDMI worked both ways, but guess it might depend on the TV?
Thanks in advance.

Called my local(ish) branch and he said that he was out of stock, but would put my name down to lock the price and i could come collect wednesday.
He said the amp is roughly £200 on its own, so pretty much speakers are free. Did recommend uprading the wires down the line though.
Anyone know the size of the unit as wondering if it will fit in my TV stand now!

Apologies, Chromecast Video will as the name suggests allow streaming of video such as iplayer, youtube, netflix etc. it has an HDMI connection only. Chromecast Audio only supports Audio and has 3.5mm (which can connect to RCA) and SPDIF optical. Either would work on this receiver and if there is only a few pounds in it, I'd get the video which can be used for both audio and video.

I'd go for the Yamaha every single time. I bought their RX-V779 a few months ago to upgrade from an older Sony receiver and love it
no reason why you would not use it in 10-15 years. 4 HDMI inputs are enough.
you could have more stuff, like Bluetooth, dlna, internet radio, airplay, Spotify, etc. but sticking a Chromecast in it covers most of the above

Any references to those numbers? I already posted my source. Technically, BT has evolved a lot.
I haven't seen BT used for video either, but we are talking about audio here.
The Bluetooth SIG officially unveiled Bluetooth 5 during a media event in London on 16 June 2016. Its new features are mainly focused on emerging Internet of Things technology. The release of products is scheduled for late 2016 to early 2017.
On the technical side, Bluetooth 5 has quadruple the range, double the speed, and provides an eight-fold increase in data broadcasting capacity of low energy Bluetooth transmissions compared to Bluetooth 4.x, which could be important for IoT applications where nodes are connected throughout a whole house. Bluetooth 5 supports transfers at 2 Mbit/s instead of the usual 1 Mbit/s. Most impressive specs about Bluetooth 5 is that the bandwidth can be adjusted. In addition it adds functionality for connectionless services like location-relevant information and navigation[78][79] of low energy Bluetooth connections.[80][81][82]
The major areas of improvement are:
Slot Availability Mask (SAM)
2 Mbit/s PHY for LE
LE Long Range
High Duty Cycle Non-Connectable Advertising
LE Advertising Extensions
LE Channel Selection Algorithm #2

18 Jan 17#128
Well it's not enough to carry high quality audio as, in the same way, a copper wire can send internet to your house at a breakneck speed but in reality it doesn't as they have protocols to follow. Bluetooth uses A2DP which caps out at 336kbps and I've not seen Bluetooth be reliably used for video as the effective ping is so high and variable that it's a silly idea to use it for that purpose. Also,
MaximusRo
18 Jan 17#127
I would be more interested in a 2 channel setup, but with all the latest gadgets (DLNA, Bluetooth, maybe DAB (but do not care that much about that)).
I actually DO NOT want 5 speakers in my room, I am more than happy with two.
Any recommendations around the same budget?

Such a nice bunch of helpful people in here.
So why do you assume I have a fruit based device? Just because you do?
Or do you mean my Orange based device.. .that must be it.
It comes with FM radio, doesn't it? Why not get a cheaper system if you are going to listen to radio, by your logic. This is not that expensive, by the way. It is a 5.1 system (a sound bar would be around 100 easy, and it is not a 5.1) and a receiver. Quite cheap actually. Maybe the cheapest?
I doubt you don't listen to any spotify or other streaming services because the sound will not be good enough.
But thanks for your input. You are probably not aware Bluetooth is a bit more capable on version 5.0 now. You live and learn, right?
Don't tell me 50Mbit/s is not enough to carry both high quality audio AND video!

thanks for reply, I am very tempted, it just that as it's not HDR passthrough, even if there's no lag added by the receiver, I wouldn't consider adding it to my Xbox one s, if only connecting it by optical audio.
now, I have been reading somewhere else that connecting the Xbox one with optical audio to the receiver isn't going to be a good solution, as the optical cable will introduce some loss of quality, therefore I am not really sure what audio signal/quality the receiver will get from the optical input...

Depends how high your standards are and how much you expect from it.
I use a Yamaha amp to drive the rear speakers in my surround system (the rest is Linn) and I'm quite happy with it for that.
I used to have an old Yamaha amp to play music in my kitchen (it died recently after many years of service) - again, I was quite happy with it for that.
I wouldn't use a Yamaha to play music in my main system - but that's not really a fair comparison (Linn stuff costs many times more than this system).
If you only want to play music, you can get a better 2 channel amp for similar money.
If you've already got a decent music system. this is unlikely to be better than it - but you might be able to integrate it (as I've done) and use it to drive just rear channels when you want surround).
If you're looking for one system to play music AND be a surround system then this is a good buy for £200.
Richers are also very good about returns - buy it on a credit card, try it at home and see if it does what you want it to do. If not, take it back.
Add a bluetooth receiver for £12 here or get a cheaper one from the bay.

18 Jan 17#63
As I've already said that all depends on the TV, most will only pass-through stereo PCM.
Not sure if your talking from experience but connecting a Xbox One S directly to an amp will not create any lag, the video signal should be pass straight through and only the sound stripped out and decoded, you do realise that even the best TV's on their own induce quite a bit of lag especially in HDR mode. Gamer mode produces less but you loose the picture quality.

So the 4k on this is effectively useless as any 4k devices will be blocked by hdcp2.2.
I have the same with my Sony strdn840, however I can kinda forgive that as hdcp2.2 hadn't arrived when i bought it. However, advertising this as 4k when it can't pass the vast majority of 4k signals is very misleading.

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including pass-through of 4K Ultra HD, which is gaining popularity. 4K Ultra HD refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K Ultra HD data from the source to the monitor, for image clarity far beyond present standards.
*This model doesn't support HDCP2.2. HDCP2.2 compatible equipments are needed to see 4K contents which are encypted with HDCP2.2.

Are the speakers which come with the amp any good? I have been looking to buy an amp as my Pioneer TV only has 1 HDMI port. Does the subwoofer produce good bass? Does anyone know how many watts it is?
Thanks,
Jay
He said the amp is roughly £200 on its own, so pretty much speakers are free. Did recommend uprading the wires down the line though.

Its all labelled on the back of the amp.
Bit of a no-mark when it comes to audio equipment and could do with replacing my crackly Logitech speakers....
Just wondered, are the speakers wall mountable? From what I've read, it comes with 25m sound cable... Just trying to work out whether would be able to wall mount the speakers?
I actually DO NOT want 5 speakers in my room, I am more than happy with two.
Any recommendations around the same budget?
So why do you assume I have a fruit based device? Just because you do?

It comes with FM radio, doesn't it? Why not get a cheaper system if you are going to listen to radio, by your logic. This is not that expensive, by the way. It is a 5.1 system (a sound bar would be around 100 easy, and it is not a 5.1) and a receiver. Quite cheap actually. Maybe the cheapest?
I doubt you don't listen to any spotify or other streaming services because the sound will not be good enough.
But thanks for your input. You are probably not aware Bluetooth is a bit more capable on version 5.0 now. You live and learn, right?
3.0 25 Mbit/s
4.0 25 Mbit/s 200 feet (60 m)
5.0 50 Mbit/s 800 feet (240 m)
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth
Don't tell me 50Mbit/s is not enough to carry both high quality audio AND video!
It's not really a lot of money though, it is one of the cheapest out there.

Has anyone got this receiver setup with an Xbox one or any other console?
If not why does nothing have coxail these days etc like Xbox One PS4 Panasonic Plasma TV etc.
But the amp is used with my wireless Sennheiser rs180 headphones.
So quite simply don't need speakers I have some but there under the bed not in use.
If I bought a toslink to optical cable could I plug the coxail into my amp and optical into my TV.
As my amp only has 2 optical ports. But has coxail port to use but the TV does not.
I use Xbox One & PS4 for the 2 optical on my amp.
I don't know what to use the coxail cable for.
So will a coxail cable to optical cable will work?
Can you buy the av reciever on its own? & how much?
Or is the a really good offer on an av reciever on its own.
someone will correct me but it's only once you get to 7.1 and atmos you need hdmi?
now, I have been reading somewhere else that connecting the Xbox one with optical audio to the receiver isn't going to be a good solution, as the optical cable will introduce some loss of quality, therefore I am not really sure what audio signal/quality the receiver will get from the optical input...
yes you plug firestick into reciever. which I suppose you could also use for sky, Netflix and prime if your TV doesn't have any optical outs
connect Xbox via optical and you will get the full 5.1
only upgrade I'd recommend is a better sub, I put up with this one for a while but it's very lacking, still great for the price mind
I also have an Amazon firestick with kodi. would that plug in to the receiver instead of the tv? thanks in advance for any advice.
Can you imagine John Lewis providing that level of service?

How much worse would this actually make it?
Not sure if your talking from experience but connecting a Xbox One S directly to an amp will not create any lag, the video signal should be pass straight through and only the sound stripped out and decoded, you do realise that even the best TV's on their own induce quite a bit of lag especially in HDR mode. Gamer mode produces less but you loose the picture quality.
(bar the remembering to claim it bit!)
Anyway if the UHD player would be an Xbox One S (like in my case) I wouldn't connect the Xbox One S to any receiver to do NOT introduce any lag when playing, If so, connecting the Xbox One S with HDMI to the TV, and with S/PDIF to the receiver, will it make it possible for the receiver to reproduce the 5.1 signal on HCDP2.2 content?
anyways I'll have to keep looking
I have a sony soundbar at the moment and its ok... but could prob flog that for £100 and get this instead as im guessing a much better sound quality.
great price though for the speakers and AV receiver together

I have the same with my Sony strdn840, however I can kinda forgive that as hdcp2.2 hadn't arrived when i bought it. However, advertising this as 4k when it can't pass the vast majority of 4k signals is very misleading.
