Google Maps is offering £20 off an Uber ride for new and existing customers.

No idea if its for selected accounts or everyone but I opened Google Maps, plotted a route home and selected the Taxi option (little man waving) and I got a popup saying £20 off this trip. I accepted and ordered and was asked to link to a new or existing Uber account, I linked to my existing and got the £20 discount.

My dad is an Uber driver. Are you saying my dad is a third world driver?

How do those figures for rape/assault compare to normal taxi drivers? On their own they are pretty meaningless.

Go into your app > swipe in from the left > select Your Trips > choose the offending trip and scroll down, choose one of the options and explain the issue you had and you'll get a refund pretty quick.

What a stupid thing to read.
64 assaults in 2 years. Uber has had over a million rides in London at the end on 2016
0.0064% chance of something bad happening.

Ive got no idea why it matters if they guy uses a sat nav to navigate. You know they have them in Black cabs in London as well?

Ive used Uber in 8 different country's and spent 7 years going out in London and I sure as hell would rather order an Uber after a night out than rely on any taxi firm on the street.

Can anyone back me up here. I can't be the only one that's asked about UBER at a police station? I could save on travel costs, so I inquired for the safety of my wife and I. If you have children that get UBER taxi's you need to be vigilant and ask the questions, otherwise you'll live to regret it.
david_kly
4 Feb 17 #199
It's a great deal if you ignore the fundamental risks. Sexual assaults are a high risk.
Read what I said above. People have to understand the risks posed by UBER's lack of co-operation with the UK police. If you don't believe me, pop into your nearest police station and ask how many unsolved UBER sexual assaults this month. This is UBER stifling stats by not supporting our police in their investigations, brand before the welfare of passengers. Then ask a police officer how easy it is to find information on taxi rank drivers. You'll find the answer is that UK taxi firms are forthcoming and provide whatever information is requested, supporting the police in getting a conviction.

4 Feb 17 1 #198
Why has this deal turned into a rape thread ?
david_kly
3 Feb 17 #197
The reasons the stats are so low is that UBER are unhelpful to say the least and will not pass any information over on drivers without a court order. So a female gets assaulted while drunk. Contacts the police, the police check with UBER and UBER request a court order. Court order's are expensive and unless the female has concrete evidence or witnesses the assailant and UBER get away with it. Thus the stats are low due to the fact UBER don't care about sexual assaults. It only cares about siphoning money to tax havens and not paying for the road and police infrastructure that they use up
david_kly
3 Feb 17 #196
Speak to your local police station about how many Uber sexual assaults they've been. I definitely would not be taking the risk. Advise females to steer clear. The UBER company is not as transparent as UK based companies as they do not have to hand any information over without a court order. So if the police have a possible suspect, unless it's concrete evidence, the chances are slim of getting a court order. The tracking of drivers is poor when compared to registered taxi drivers. An UBER taxi driver can choose to not log a journey and carry out an assault. Steer clear. Don't believe the marketing people on this forum

Uber drivers go through EXACTLY the same licensing requirements as any other Private Hire driver. Your point may have been valid in the US, where they don't have the concept of a Private Hire license, but the UK already had regulations in place long before Uber arrived on our shores.
bblgoose
27 Jan 17 #171
The majority of Uber drivers in my city originate from competing private hire firms. They switched to Uber because it's better for them than the traditional Private Hire model - there's no possibility of passengers "doing a runner", they don't have the risk of carrying a lot of cash, and abusive passengers (such as yourself) can be blacklisted by a driver so they don't pick them up again.

Where is this imaginary world where the meter starts on 10p? Liverpool 1981?

Surely there is no council in Britain where the minimum fare is 10p?

You will never get charged £55 for an £8 fare with Uber as surge pricing doesn't go that high. Sure, use your trusted local cabbie service, but it's always worth comparing with Uber since it only takes 15 seconds for a quote. It's impossible to be taken for a ride in the wrong direction too as the whole trip is logged by GPS, which I think is quite a good feature.

I used the free £20 this weekend in London, little Venice to St James's around 20-25min journey. Uber Exec quoted £17-23 and it came in under £20 so was free to me. A very pleasant driver in a brand new Mercedes Eclass. For 4 of us it was cheaper than using the cheaper (even if it wasn't £20 off) so will always use uber exec in a big group from now on.

I just want to add that all taxi drivers go through a enhanced DBS check, even Uber drivers because we're licenced through the councils. There are bad taxi drivers, even Uber has their fair share but please report them to the company, if you cant get a satisfactory answer then to the local council. Every taxi firm has a set of rules to follow for complaints and most will do their best to redress that. Uber is email based but they usually get back to you in minutes.
ehsan111
23 Jan 17 4 #136
I dont drive for uber anymore but rather a small taxi firm(mainly for business customers and local tesco runs). I have drove for Uber before and whilst it has it significant disadvantages for drivers, such as the low rates of fares, which you have to make up for by having surge pricing, its still fairly good for customers. If anything, it has really made our small firm focus a lot more of efficiency and customer service.. We're even launching an uber like app next month.. Its custom made rather than off the shelf. We've introduced fee free contactless points in our cars and carry payment machines but will integrate it all through the app (paypal) contactless etc. Its extremely difficult because we have lost a lot of customers to uber and another big firm but at least we're trying our best to retain our customers through investing. I do think some taxi companies aren't trying hard enough but there is a ticking demographic change coming and we have to try and appeal to the next generation of taxi users. But yes its a fantastic deal

Can't believe how much negativity is on this thread, I use Uber in liverpool after years of shi**y service from the 'other' big firm over here, and they're fantastic!

In the other firm I've had a driver doing 60+ through the docks, and three friends or friends-of-friends had their houses robbed after giving the address, and often don't turn up or give away your cab to someone else. With Uber the drivers are generally 'chauffeur' like, calm and pleasant, and yet to have my house robbed after ordering one!

I'm sure like any service there are pockets of good and bad but in Liverpool they're great.

the cars ive been with uber have been way more modern, efficient comfortable and warmer than any of the clunky, old slow driving to ramp up the meter black cabs ive been in. Ok if maybe 5 of you on a night out from one end of town to the other, but other than that, esp at end of the night with shared journey tracking to a friend, licence plate, car and driver photo details, its going to be uber for me every time.

coach_mcguirk
23 Jan 17 #121
If it's surged, it won't let you book until you've clicked to confirm you accept the multiple. Also, it always displays an estimated fare, and remember - these aren't fixed fares. If you're delayed in traffic or diverted, it will end up costing more. Same as with any cab, you've got to have your wits about you. The trip details in your account break down the make up of the fare.

The nearest I've seen to this is when I got an Uber home once, and evidently the driver forgot to mark the trip finished, so the clock carried on and the fare ended up being about double what it should have been. Disputed the fare, Uber refunded and credited immediately.
coach_mcguirk
23 Jan 17 3 #120
To drive for Uber in the UK you must be cleared to work in the UK, which in practice means (at the moment) you'll be an EU citizen, or someone from a non-eu country with indefinite leave to remain or similar. Asylum seekers / refugees cannot work. I have a friend who drove for Uber for a while - he's Romanian, but has lived here for a few years. He said the vetting process and checks were as stringent as he's had in any other job here. Remember, in London at least, all drivers must be licensed by TFL. Their photos are used in the app and on their license. You can't just stroll into Uber and get a job without proving your identity and your right to work.
coach_mcguirk
23 Jan 17 #119
Last time I used a local PH company was to pre-book a car to pick up my girlfriend from Heathrow at 5am. She was travelling alone. They didn't show up, and weren't answering their phone. This was before Uber allowed you to pre-book, so we won't be making that mistake again.

Good old LTDA propaganda. The old boys network doesn't like their monopoly being threatened.

I've used Uber a huge amount in the last couple of years. Customer service always fixes problems immediately. If you make a valid complaint, in my experience they refund IMMEDIATELY, and often give you credit too. I've never experienced a racist Uber driver, whereas I've had bad experiences like that repeatedly in black cabs. For context, the last time I used a black cab the driver was using a sat nav, answering his phone and replying to texts while he drove. No thanks. I've never had an Uber driver be anything less than professional, and some of them have been a joy to talk to as we rode. My girlfriend had one driver make her feel a little uncomfortable (she used Uber usually twice a day on weekdays, so this is a tiny proportion), and when she raised her concerns Uber refunded, gave her credit, and removed the driver from service (I'm guessing this wasn't the first such complaint).

Was in Hong Kong at Xmas, and when I requested an UberBLACK, we were picked up in a Tesla Model S

23 Jan 17 1 #116
that is not how uber works. the driver will not know the price, and the price is dependent on the surge pricing that may or may not be in place at the time. If no surge pricing then Uber is usually cheaper than the phone up price for a mini cab, if surge pricing it can be 2 or 3 times more expensive than others. If on the app it says *1.75 or *2.5 etc then don't book an Uber unless you really want to pay for it, or nothing else is available, as that is what they * the standard fare by. Also of note if you are a long standing customer of a company and get mates rates this may be cheaper than Uber too, but unlikely half the price.

But users of the app agreed to the terms of service, it's as simple as that. It clearly states in them that location services can and will be exploited at the will of Uber.

I don't see the issue personally, if it improves the service then who cares if they can monitor my location. It's just the same as every other app in the top 100. Big Data is here to stay, it's time to accept that or uninstall.

You miss the issue here, its not location services, it the way Uber have coded the app to track after 'dropping lite' this is wrong by Uber and they should recode and issue an update as soon as possible.

Compared to the States, all uber drivers in the UK need a private hire licence from the council and uber has to be licenced as well, to operate. Therefore, as you say, any problems will be the same as any other firm.

If existing minicab firms had been faster to implement app technology and also hadn't peed off customers with dodgy journey detours (YMMV, but had to argue the price twice recently for not just slight detours, but massively inappropriate routes), then uber wouldn't gain traction, surely?

It is just natural selection - minicab firms have significantly affected black cabs (where I live now only really at station and city centre ranks, but 5 years ago if I needed one suddenly, unplanned, in the morning I could flag one down within minutes on a busy road).

And the social media manager of another local firm stalked a friend of mine from their official account and she had to get a restraining order!

So with this attitude, we'll just stop ordering cabs entirely and walk?

I've used Uber 50+ times and only ever had one issue, which was them showing up to the wrong house because the estate was a strange layout. They charged me the fee but I got it refunded the same day.

Thanks for this!

Only thing being intruded here is the list of stupid comments 2017.

If you want them to assist you in finding a ride as quickly as possible, enable location services.

If you wear a tin foil hat, disable location services.

Not that hard now, is it?

I always use Uber when I want an entertaining journey.
Last time the driver took the wrong exit off a roundabout and then decided the best way to turn round was by driving straight into a McDonalds drive through queue. He couldn't reverse out so had to stay in the queue. I wouldn't have minded but I hate McDonalds so couldn't even pick up some food!
Needless to say after that I gave him very specific directions.

Uber drivers account for 27% of the mini cab market share but 20% of those assaults, so clearly its our drivers that are already here that need further background checks.

Hopefully, more of these men come over here so the number of assaults continues to decrease.

Its funny you say these men have little respect for woman and yet you wouldn't respect your daughters decision to use an Uber, while on top of that saying you will go crazy if she does.
moh89
23 Jan 17 6 #82
1) You're wrong.

2) 32 rapes/sexual assaults is equal to 20% among all mini cab services in London (32 per year from 154 in total).

3) Uber has 27% of the market share (25,000 from under 90,000 drivers).

4) Which means that these "Third world drivers" are statistically less likely to rape/sexually assault, thus making us safer then we were before they came over here and took our jobs.

If i could get uber where I lived I'd never use the local taxi firm again, I've used uber numerous times whilst on trips to manchester, London and Orlando and thought the service and pricing was excellent every time. I only hope they have full UK service as soon as possible
Jeimu3u
23 Jan 17 #76
It's easy to dispute. You go into "Your Trips" and file a complaint by selecting the correct options in the "help" section. It's usually automatic refund. I've done this numerous times when drivers just don't turn up or take silly routes.

23 Jan 17 #73
I think there's definitely a place for both. I booked a taxi with my local taxi firm from home to work for sunday morning at 06:30, they arrived on time, no probs. The trip cost £22. You can't book ahead with Uber.

However, to get home, my local taxi firm don't have a presence where I work so I'd have to wait a good 30 minutes for them. With Uber though, they were there in 3 minutes and the trip cost under £20 - well, it was actually free with this offer but would have cost under £20.

So, for me, there's room for both.
futura
23 Jan 17 1 #72
Even when Uber are at their cheapest, my local firm is still cheaper - their meters start at 10p and for a 4 mile journey I pay around £6-7. I call them and they are here without fail in a few minutes, dont get lost and are a please to deal with.

I guess we live in a society where many people would sell their own grandma for a fiver so I can see why this offer would appeal, I would just rather support a local business than a one based in Trumpland

In defence of uber.. From a ex uber driber view.. I'll be unbiased as i can be.

1) no runners.. Charged on card and plus we can charge a £3 no show fee.. Wait 5mins. Try calling customer if no fare then cancel.

2) intergrated with Google maps.. Just swipe and google map guides us to the customer and destination.. Although not always the shorter route that local cabbies might know.

3) surge fare... Charge 2,3,4x normal fare. Good for drivers working on busy weekend hours

4) best for part time taxi driver. You pay fee on what you earn

5) customer have ratings so refuse to pick up customers in busy hours that have bad rating

6) a great chat- rating system encourages good customer service

Bad things:

1) email based.. No support whatsoever as a driver if urgent issues arise. Often its your word against the customers word and uber sides with customer

2) drunk customer disputing surge fares.. Yes you confirmed it twice before you booked.

3) snobbish customers.. Always looking down at you.. Often business people or high flyers who can be condescending.

ehsan111
23 Jan 17 1 #62
I use to drive for uber, I honestly don't see the appeal of driving for them.. You get very little return after they deduct their 25% fee, that's just for using the app. Insurance, maintenance, taxes come from my pocket, which is true for any taxi company because we're self employed. You only make money with uber through surge fares, mostly ferrying drunk people home who don't mind paying double or in some cases, triple the fare. ordinary taxi companies that charge a fixed fare or by meter tend to work out cheaper once you factor in surge fares in the long run. uber is aggressively competing on price trying to outprice the competition on standard fares.

I pay less in fees, ~£100 a week 'rent' , regardless of how much i earn or work whereas Uber, you end up paying them far more in fees.

Plus no tips with uber.. Uber actively discourage tips so yeah.

I drive for a local company now, customers are much happier paying a fixed fare. Most of our customers also use other taxi companies so please keep your options and mind open. Once these small firms go out of business, which they will, uber will have a monopoly.

I used this offer on New Years eve at like midnight. First time I'd used Uber and couldn't really fault them. The guy working for them seemed pretty happy and being an ex-taxi driver who converted basically enjoyed that people couldn't do runners on him... Also, I got the journey for free. Dunno much about Uber but bad things so I was a bit confused.

Just to clear a few things up you won't be getting a Taxi you'll be getting a minicab with a third world driver. 2nd it's known as the Rape app for a reason 32 rapes/Sexual assaults 2015 & 2016 that's 64 in the last 2 years in London alone. figures direct from the mayor of London. Look for #ubered on twitter. Saving money is great. Saving money and putting your life at risk is not.

Will get my £5 off tomorrow for using Android Pay but £20 would have been much better!

The only other thing which comes up for me is with the 'Gett' black taxi app which is giving £5 off on 3 rides using code 'GOOGLE' but it's more expensive than Uber but will use it for some short local journeys if it still comes up for me in the future which might be good for when I travel with my dog as find black cabs MUCH more dog friendly than regular cabs
