HEAT.
MM and MK8 were the most played games by my kid on Wii U last year. Can only comment on the kid, as I am not to bothered with making levels on MM. So he asked for MM 3DS on 3DS for Christmas and I thought why not, he will get great use of it for out and about and car travel etc. After an initial bit of flurry and excitement on the game he has not really touched it. I think there was less novelty having played on Wii U so much last year, and also I think it is better suited to the Wii U.
All that said, is hardly a disaster on 3DS, I think its fairly good. And if it is a 1st introduction to Mario Maker via the 3DS, go for it I would say.

Just had a proper play through the 2 levels and the bonus motorbike level on the demo. Was surprised just how good it is and how brilliant it plays. Probably should not be surprised. Looks absolutely great. I prefer playing 3DS game to the Wii U game.

Great game, there are 100 new courses designed by Nintendo pre-installed and endless fun creating and watching others play levels you create yourself.

you can't upload your created levels to the nintendo servers/network for others to play though, which is the main feature of the Wii U version, so annoying! The additional 100 nintendo levels i like the idea of, but no full online support is a joke! Mario Maker is all about the community connecting (even though there are some idiotic levels) Many, many level creators spend hundreds of hours creating masterpieces, there is literally no incentive for those people to do that on 3ds when it can only be shared with a select few friends

It is a sore point you raise, and quite baffling Nintendo did that. Going by the demo, and the info available on Wooly's Yoshi World, they seemed to have got that one right by adding good new features. Taking away such a key aspect of what makes MM great was never going to be popular.
Worth mentioning that the available internet levels, although a limited selection, the selection is not static and does get rotated/updated with new levels. Not sure how frequently this happens?
