Absolutely wonderful game, a bargain for £7.49

It's a VERY pretty game but it's also VERY frustrating in places and lacks polish in the gameplay dept.

Some people have called it "Super Meat Boy in a fairy costume" but that's unfair because SMB has better controls and more respect for the player's time, there are sections which wouldn't be out-of-place in SMB tho.

Ori also does some douchebag things like repeat 'cutscenes' every time you die and even make you die just to show you some mechanic - some areas are massive ballaches, some are just poorly designed and it's overall map/structure is very, very confusing at times. I also despise it's approach to savepoints because whilst it seems 'flexible', you can also paint yourself into a corner - it's just another bit of shonky design.

So I think I'd say "beware" - sure, it's very pretty but if you come for that and aren't expecting a really tough platformer which likes kicking you in the nuts, you'll have a bad time.

This is a brilliant game and not nearly as difficult as some people make out. On my second play through, I managed to complete it with no manual upgrades and not a single death (It def does not kill you just to show you some mechanic, unless they added that in for the definitive edition, which I paid for having enjoyed the original so much)

Absolutely beautiful game. Shows what can be done in a 2d platformer rather than lazily aping 20 year old graphics.

Example: First time in the Ginzo Tree you encounter portals - the way your momentum/movement works with those makes not dying the first few times you use them just-about-impossible. Ironically, the rather pretty portal effects are at least partially to blame as they obscure your character when you need to be able to see where you've just arrived/are headed (usually into a pile of spikes).

If the gameplay had the polish of the visuals it would be a MUCH better game - as-is it's not terrible (it's not Little Big Planet terrible, at least) but anyone showing-up expecting a pretty wander around game will get a nasty shock, it's going to make you work and it's going to make you curse it's controls/it's choice of pretty graphics over clarity quite a bit too.

Basically, you could watch it on Youtube and get it's USP (the pretty graphics) and then play any of 100 far better platformers (Rayman, SMB and so on)

To be fair, that's down to the individual. For me, Ori was the most enjoyable platformer I'd played in years. It did have an interesting difficulty curve, but the gameplay, story and visuals made the random moments of temporary frustration quite forgettable.
At the end of the day, it would seem to be a marmite game, if you're like me, you'll love it and think this was a great use of £7.49. If not, move on to the next game in your steam library.

I'd recommend playing this with a dualshock 4 controller. The mechanics really suited it and made some of the difficult jumps far easier than keyboard

I just bought a Bluetooth adapter for like £6 on Amazon and it's transformed what I can do with my pc. Worth a try.
