Dr.Eggman (AKA Dr.Robotnik) begins his zealous search for the Chaos Emeralds to fuel his new "Death Egg" contraption. One afternoon, he launches his full-scale attack on the island. Dr.Eggman imprisons all of the helpless animals of the island and turns them into mindless worker drones. Fortunately, Sonic will thwart the Doctor's plans at all costs. This time, he isn't alone, as Tails decides to aid him in the battle. Together they must locate the Chaos Emeralds before Dr.Eggman does, and put an end to this diabolical scheme.

It looks like the entire Sonic back catalogue has 50% off this week.
I fell playing it now would ruin the memory of playing as a kid .I played demo and realised its about collection coins but as a kid didn't really care about the coins to much . Was just about completing the level and beating the boss lol . Its saying on google the game can be beat in 5 hours but I remember the game going on for ever . A bit like supermario 64 that game took me months if not years lol to complete actually I never did complete . Remember me mums bf playing it and getting past the levels we couldn't lol . Then you got gta vice city another game that felt took a year to complete . Was just reading this https://fletchtalks.wordpress.com/2016/12/28/game-review-sonic-the-hedgehog-2-master-system/

I remember Sonic back in the day - do you think my kids will get into this? Thinking a nice alternative to Minecraft and FIFA (plus I can reminisce!).

I would hope so! These are right up there as classic rights of passage games!
The music in these games is childhood to me. You never forget memorable gaming music. Animal Crossing is similar in that regard. Ah memories
Fingers crossed the new Sonic games coming this year are brilliant games

If you own &Knuckles, you can play the combined cartridge variations of the other Sonic games (Knuckles in Sonic 2, etc) by going to the bonus features section. It will know the Sonic games you own, and works great on Xbox one. Gonna pick up Sonic 3 later, then I'll own them all finally. Thanks op

Nah no cheats for these ports sadly. Including up, down, left, right, A, Start for Sonic 1, and the jump on a swing in level 1 of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, press left left left, right, right, right, up, up up, start + A. Which means if you want to mess around or start from level 1 with Super sonic you can't.
Even the original Sonic 3 & knuckles had a level select built in when you beat the game, and you kept your emeralds for super/hyper sonic/knuckles/tails but sadly that's all gone in these ports.
It does have three save states though which is handy for replaying certain bosses.

It may be a more complex and better looking game than Sonic 1 but the Chaos Emerald bonus sections in Sonic 2 are absolute trash. They're pretty difficult to get to (as the warp points are at checkpoints and their location obviously varies in every level) and they require total memorisation to complete so it takes many playthroughs and lots of time to do. Also the terrible "Mode 7" imitation is just bad.
It's not the end of the world if you don't care about the 100% but for me it sullies the game. I guess save states nowadays are a big help but it doesn't exactly say good things about the design. The Sonic 1 bonus levels are great.

I actually thought the bonus stages were ok. I completed them back in the day without any help but some of the later ones are almost impossible if you do them with Tails following. I hugely prefer them over the newer Sonic 4 special stages that are like a modified version of Sonic 1's but with a very awkward control style.

Sonic 2 is probably my favourite Sonic game of all time, even to this day it holds up well. The SMS version of the game was great in its own way but a totally different game. It's still one of those sleeper hits IMHO. 5 hours was probably even too long unless you were collecting everything, back then most games could be completed in one sitting cos save states and battery backup was rare. I'm with you on Mario64 tho

Yeah, the game used to take me a full Saturday to get to Death Egg and fail (providing I got past the boss on Wing Fortress, which was a b*stard).
BUT it's not like Mario 64 - that aged badly, but Sonic just hasn't. I still think it's the best all-round platformer of all time. Even £1.69 for the music alone is a bargain
