Debuting as the top seller for its launch in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (SMT4A)depicts the remnants of Tokyo ravaged by a catastrophe. Demons and humans co-exist, but in this state the remains of humankind are just a prize being fought over by the higher deities. One lone Hunter, the game's protagonist, meets an early demise and through a pact with a lesser god is brought back to life in exchange for his pledge of servitude. From there, the protagonist allies with other Hunters in the ruins of post-apocalyptic Tokyo, beginning a plot that crosses over with the events of the original Shin Megami Tensei IV.

I'm afraid to get this game... Shin Megami Tensei IV was the best game I've played on 3ds and I bet the sequel is at least as good. Either way, if I opted for this option, 1-2months would be much of a wait for me, so it's more cold than hot :P Not voting though

It fixes a lot of the mechanical problems from SMT4, like the broken skill inheretence and smirk mechanics. It's probably the most balanced version of the press turn system in SMT history and offers a better challenge than SMT4, where Medusa is the final boss in terms of challenge. I didn't care for the story or characters though.

Its a better game. this is the regular price (posted for once!) and i know i say this everytime this is posted but holy cow the publishers deep silver botched this release.
They knew it was going to be a niche title when the took the reigns of the shin megami universe from atlus In europe. But they grossly underestimated the original print run needed. I'll be amazed If they make this any worse for people and its the full 2 month wait.
I dont like amazon personally but if you wanted the game i'd most definitely jump on this to guarantee a copy.

Is this good for beginners? Never really played a SMT game before and don't really want to feel out of the loop? At the same time, is the hype really warranted? Thinking that maybe there are better RPGs on the market, but not sure where this ranks...

It depends on what you mean by beginner. If you're a JRPG beginner, hell no! SMT games are NAILS. If you're well versed in JRPG's and you want a jumping point into the SMT universe, there is no harm in joining here. It's an isolated story that can be understood without having played any previous games.
As for if it's any good, I personally believe SMT to be the best JRPG franchise out there

Thanks for the feedback... Going to mull it over, but given that Gravity Rush 2 (PS4) is launching on Friday, not to mention that I really want a physical copy of Trails of Cold Steel, I think I might pass on this.

Though I do recommend this game, I too am ever conscious of the necessity of prioritizing gaming time to prevent a backlog. And with a vast amount of games on my radar over the next few months (Nioh, Nier, Persona 5, Zelda BOTW) it's becoming ever harder.
I've had to pass on Trails of Cold Steel, due to not having the time, even though I enjoyed Trails in the Sky so much

No game from the SMT universe at all? they can differ quite a bit from franchise to franchise (although franchise isn't really the correct term i guess) but anyway on the 3ds Devil survivor Overclocked and Devil survivor 2 Record breaker are tactical grid/turn base combat games so quite different from this or SMT 4 which are 3rd person/open world (ish)/turn based combat. So it depends on what you like. SMT Devil summoner Soul hackers is a dungeon crawler/random battle type fwiw so different again.
Regardless the games storylines are usually great and they do offer good value for money. Resale value (on physical copies obvs) remains high so even if you cant try a demo and buy blind its almost free gaming as you can sell it on for little loss (insert disclaimer here otters) i'd go with Overclocked first or see what SMT 4 goes for on the eshop its usually on sale a few times are year at about £8 odd.
