This has made me think twice, been looking at smart sockets for a while. And more or less settled on TP-Link Wi-Fi Smart Plug HS100. mmmm which way to go?

for main lights this kit is what you need. can dim also
tp link for lamps, heater, kettle etc.

I've got Philips Hue for my lights and have a HS100 from TP-Link for a dehumidifier I have. I plan on keeping with TP-Link now for their smart plugs and Philips for their bulbs. Both work natively with the Echo so I never really have to actually delve into the apps for each platform.

shame it's isn't bayonet
bigbak
23 Jan 17#4
Probably worth pointing out that if you use the adapters to make them bayonet it won't fit in the ceiling socket while the bit that holds a shade on is in place.
I got an adapter from eBay and it works in my outside bulb
ervidel
23 Jan 171#8
But it is true, adapters are practical but limit the number of shades or enclosures that will allow for "longer" bulbs. Best as said above is to change the bulb holder to e27 if at all possible. Bayonet type is mostly in the uk. Outside the uk the norm is Edison Screw.

My only concern is plugging in more adpators using power, turning on lights at night with open curtains if you're out, does this not shout "hey, my house is empty?"
Very tempted all my downstair lights are SES or some weird Spot light bulb that cost £9 each? This means I can only use them upstairs.
Still a very good deal op.

23 Jan 17#20
Thats one of the main advantages of smart bulbs, if you have left your lights on with the curtains open or programmed your lights to come on whilst your curtains are open you can remotely turn them off anywhere in the world that your smart phone can get internet connection. So if your in Sainsburys or if your in Spain, fire up the app and turn off those lights

23 Jan 17#39
The TP-Link HS110 is around £35 and the HS100 is around £25. The HS110 model can record how much energy the device connected to it uses. Probably not worth the extra £10 for it, but it's the only model of the smart plug that appears to be in stock anywhere. I got mine from Argos before Christmas and I see they still have the HS110 in stock just now.

Main problem for me in changing over to smart bulbs is that your not meant to use the light switch but no one in the house would remember not to (for a good while) other than me probably.
If the light switch was say off presuming that there's no electricity so it's impossible to turn the bulb on with your phone?
trickytree
23 Jan 17#43
As I got an Echo at Christmas this has been brought to my attention but from what I can tell it is kind of doing the job that my Dlink plug sockets do.
The only difference is those controlled by a wall switch perhaps?
Can you control wall lights with this rather than free standing lights?
I have free standing lights plugged into my Dlink sockets and they work well and as this pack is just white bulbs I see no real advantage over what I already have.
The Echo controls the Dlink plugs also so no advantage there either.
Any comments/help would be great. Thanks

do people need the hub if they have an echo?
smurkenstein
23 Jan 17#57
That's about right. They need to be on to dim, trigger, etc. There are six options 1] on and off like a usual bulb with the wall light switch 2] set a pre-programmed sequence for when you are in 3] set a motion sensor to trigger the on/off 4] use a phillips battery-powered dimmer switch (useful for changing a switch position without rewiring) 5] control by voice (eg alexa) 6] set an away situation for random security lighting while out
shakerstevens
23 Jan 17#58
Nope I don't - I was just replying to the previous guy who said what if he accidentally leaves them on.
And you would know as the app tells you which lights are on, which are not etc. You can set timers or cancel the timers if you are away etc. Doesn't matter if you are in spain etc, so long as you have internet connection on the phone....

MrJed

I worried about this, but it seem to be a non issue, in respect that if you turn the light off at the switch, it drops out of the system, but you simply need to turn it on again.
Smart_Arse
23 Jan 17#68
That's one reason I'm investing in Smart switches. Standard cheap bulbs, smart switches, and they can still control the light regardless of the switch position.
Well, I say smart switch, it's a module that sits behind a standard switch. I could then replace a single switch with a double, connect the 2nd button up to the same module, and use it to trigger other automated things.
E.g. the first switch controls the light as normal, the 2nd could.....turn on the lamps in the room (connected to smart plugs), or turn on/off all downstairs lighting.......

I'm just going down the hue, echo, smartthings, IFTTT rabbit hole, and I agree, it can be pretty flakey tbh. There's no way I'd have a remote door lock, for example.
