We have one. Works fine for web browsing such as Facebook, etc. Wife recently took it on holiday to Tenerife and it worked flawlessly. Used it for Skype video and voice calls. Almost disposable at this price.

Is this any good for a 11 year old for games?

No. It only just manages web browsing. My dad has one and I find it infuriatingly slow just browsing, I'm sure it will struggle with the simplest of games.

No, buy them an Android tablet. Nothing wrong with this, ignoring the 1GB whiners, but being a Windows tablet you won't have the app and game selection. Your 11 year old would appreciate an Android tablet a lot more IMO.

Any game that is compatible with Linx 8 (see link below) should be compatible with this tablet as they are essentially the same interms of hardware.
burn your cash. its just as useful. terrible device. still trying to get tesco to take ours back.

I intend to use it to read eBooks/PDFs, what would you recommend instead around a similar price point?

Wow wee just shows you how important these forums are.thanks for the comments I would have thought for the spec was great for the price.however you can't beat feedback from people who have actually brought the unit.

Get the linx tab, found it faster although specs seemed similar to this rubbish

Don't know, didn't try with this. If that's all you want Id look at a Kindle which is specially designed for that purpose. My wife loves her Kindle Fire
