The cartridge thing definitely isn't the reason - new console is absolutely the reason, they gouge us because they can. Always the case with any new console that game prices are higher on average then move down. I expect this to go a fair bit lower before launch, still 3 months.

£42 for a handheld and a home console game with 2 person multiplayer at no additional cost?

That was just a placeholder, surprised many believed that to be the price.
RRP so far seems to be £30-40 for most games. I even managed to get Zelda for around £38

Aye, for some insane reason, Nintendo are supplementing British game prices for the Switch. It's ALWAYS been the opposite; they were even sued for it in the past.
Here's hoping it's penance and not a devilish marketing trick.

Still 3 months until release, I expect this to come down further than £42. It started cheaper than the others I believe at many retailers.

Think I paid £34.99 for Mario Kart 8 Wii U then £11 for DLC so this comes in cheaper. Still, couldn't not get this game!

LOL! So true. But then again, if you divide the price of the originak MK8 by the amount of hours played on it, then it's one of the cheapest games I've ever bought.

Great price for a preorder. But holding out as I think we will see some better prices post launch when stores hold stock.

Why are these prices so high? And this one is barely a remaster or anything.
Just ported to higher res and added a few character and mode. Boom full price and over?

Because it's a launch console using a new type of media.
Getting a 13 GB game on a cartridge that instantly plays is unheard of. It's an entirely new concept.
Prices will remain high until they 1) Learn to manufacture the cartridge cheaper and more efficiently 2) The console actually releases.
