Top end Lenovo 2in1 convertible laptop, 13" QHD Screen, with good specs, and i7 processor.
Was 1200, now £300 off, and 2 year John Lewis Warranty too...
Blurb below, but looks a proper bargain to me, a lot of computer for the money.
Yes,. I know there are cheaper for the specs, but this is a top of the line ultrabook, not 2 inch thick argos or medion special.

[blurb]
Lenovo's Yoga 900 is designed to adapt to your needs to let you easily turn it from a laptop to a tablet for maximum enjoyment. Perfect for watching movies, editing photos or word processing to make work and play a doddle. Got one of these and it's going right back.
The touchpad is absolutely awful. It randomly stops responding until you remove your finger, acts as if you have 2 fingers on the touchpad instead of one so instead of moving the mouse it starts zooming in an out. Drivers don't help. In fact removing the synaptic drivers actually makes it work a bit better.
Why can't they make touchpads that work on a £1000 machine.

Looks like better screen, better graphics, weighs less, USB-C ports, and premium build quality on the 900, better value is down to whether those kind of things are important to you.

How does this Lenovo yoga 900 compare to the Lenovo yoga 710?

If I had to gues I'd say probably sprayed but mine doesnt have a single scuff and looks as good as news. If it keeps the device lighter then that's a big plus for me.

In terms of build quality it's top notch and definitely a high end device. There is no doubting it's plastic throughout although its totally hidden. Let me explain! On the outside it's (probably) sprayed alluminium so looks the part. On the insie the area outside the keyboard is (probably) plastic but has a leather/rubberised feel which is very grippy and doesnt transmit heat so remains cool. Although a wholy alluminium design might reek of quality, its heavier and hotter in practice. This device looks great on the outside, is solidly build and offers an immense number of practical benefits.

Part of me still wishes it had smaller bezels but then you'd have a shoddier webcam, crampier keyboard and smaller battery so for what its worth, if the bezels are the biggest compromise then the good still outweighs the bad for me.

I had the original Surface Pro, SP3 & SP4. I LOVED them however the hadware andsoftware issues left me wanting not to mention they were incredibly over priced unless you're happy to pay Apple prices.

This machine is a beautifully different beast. No pretentiousness, excellent build quality, great guts and at £900 from JL, excellent value for money.

The Pros as good as they are have many many problems. If I was paying £1000+ for a tablet/laptop it would have to be near damn perfect. The Pros are getting better but are anything but perfect. They are too compromised. This machine get a lot more right than the pros ever did IMO
FrugalFergal
5 Jan 17 #63
Yes, very true, plus you have a decent webcam which the bezeless convertibles either lack or are ill placed. Big bezels are ugly but you have to decide whether your priorities are form or function.

Let's put this into perspective - remember how sexy the Macbook Air is/was? Well this machine is monumentally more powerful (core i7), much more ram (8GB), has a much bigger and faster SSD, a larger, significantly higher resolution touch sensitive screen with ports galore and thinner bezels with that has a beautiful hing that can fold into a tablet.

Those benchmarks make this a good machine to have for most people. It's certainly more than satisfactory and this price, very good value for money.

5 Jan 17 #60
This was completely tongue in cheek... almost every laptop deal that appears on here that isn't FHD gets someone complaining that the device is only HD and not FHD. This laptop has QHD which is a much higher resolution than FHD. I was being facetious hence the top hat smiley.
bilbob
5 Jan 17 #59
His point is sound. Windows scaling fixes the size issue, and only remains when in 'legacy' windows functions, like old control panel stuff, but even that can be enlarged too, it just doesn't look as neat. But resolution isn't the same thing as text size.
Higher resolution makes for better looking text when done right.
dozstanford
5 Jan 17 #58
So you have a 4k, 13" monitor then ?
adamski88
5 Jan 17 #57
I disagree as well, my girlfriend has a 12" surface pro, and the screen is amazing
Traldera
4 Jan 17 #56
Not at all, it will benefit text reading quite a bit. Windows UI scaling can be used to keep the size of things where you like them but things like text will be much crisper.
I have a 4k monitor so that above is from experience
Picard123
4 Jan 17 1 #55
Just different options for different buyer requirements. This Lenovo is a silly price for what it offers when there are similar / better convertibles out there for less. A watch band isn't enough to drive sales.

4 Jan 17 #53

:man:
dozstanford to matdey
4 Jan 17 1 #54
Not quite sure if this is sarcasm but I've been in two minds whether to buy this or not and the fact is if it were actually worse (FHD rather than QHD) I would have already bought it. QHD is nice an all for gaming and movies on a 17", maybe 15" devices at a push but on a 13" screen doing "normal" stuff with such a resolution requires a magnifying glass.

Desktop Kaby Lake is an absolute joke.

Laptops do see a 15% gain in CPU performance and 20% gains on the iGP/GPU. Although the iGPU is laughable compared to Intel's own Iris iGP.
Although if you want to game you're better off with a 1050/ti equipped machine.

bilbob
4 Jan 17 1 #49

In the flesh these look very dated to me. There is a wide border round the edge of the screen making the machine much bigger than it needs to be. Side by side with a latitude 7370 or an xps 13 it's just chunky. Apparently there is a new xps 13 out with the 360 degree hinge.
bilbob to lazyboy
4 Jan 17 1 #26
There is, but the reason the xps manages to get by on a small border is because they put the webcam is an utterly stupid position. That is the sole reason I'm not considering the dell.
FrugalFergal to lazyboy
4 Jan 17 #44
I do agree the borders are big. It's my single hate. However it affords it a much more comfortable keyboard and bigger battery to power the near 4k screen resolutions so I think the big bezels hide quite clever engineering decisions and I for one and happy with the 7-10hr battery life I get as apposed to the compromises I'd have to make for a sexy bezeless design.
FrugalFergal
4 Jan 17 1 #43
This machine is also *totally* silent during web browsing, movies, music, streaming, office. The fans only turn up during video encoding and photo editing. I do that occasionally but 99% of the time it's silent.

I have a Yoga 2 Pro and I've had no end of trouble with it. Went back first time because of a faulty keyboard and it took ages to get it returned. I've been trying to avoid sending it back again because of this but now I've got to send it back for broken wireless, over heating, and a dodgy clickpad. Wish I'd got a Thinkpad.
FrugalFergal to AndrewHu
4 Jan 17 #41
I had an issue when the USB power port failed. I rang lenovo and they bent over backards to help (that might be a sign this is a bigger problem theyre trying to bury) and they took the machine back for a full service , extended the warranty a few months and it works as well as possible.

None of the Yoga 2 problems you mentioned came into play thank goodness. I would still say Lenovo on balance make great products and at the very least their service is an Apple-approaching 5 star from me.
FrugalFergal
4 Jan 17 #40
No. Only the USB2.0/charge port.

Having said that, the macbook USB C adaptor I have works great as a port multiplier

http://images.mobilefun.co.uk/graphics/300pixelp/satechi-usb-c-adapter-hub-with-usb-charging-ports-gold-p62178-300.jpg

I got mine in silver for around £20 on ebay and now have 3 more USB 3.0 ports, micro SD and another USB C port!
FrugalFergal
4 Jan 17 #39
The keyboard is nice and key travel is a cross between a macbook air and new mac book.Once you get used to typing on the low travel keys its great. Im not the fastest typer so my skills are a weaker link than the keyboard itself.

Battery will surely last a day. The screen in almost 4k and it has an i7 CPU with 8GB ram so all of those draw a lot of power. The 1080p i5 version lasts a smidge longer but on balance this is a superior, more future proof machine. I could easily get 7hrs out of this machine.

There are machines that last longer but if you want near 4K resolution and i7 power that is feather light with gorgeous screen hinge with plenty of ports then this is for you. None of the compromises effected me a jot so for me at least this is the best machine on the market. My only gripe is that the bezzels are wide but it means a bigger base, better keyboard and bigger battery so on balance its something i can live with.

Bought the PCWorld offer of Yoga 510 before Christmas for £350. It's i3, but upgraded RAM from 4GB to 16GB for £90 and installed 512GB SSD had lying around. Fantastic machine, very sturdy. This one is i7 and QHD screen. Probably would have gone for this one if I didn't have the 510 already.

I got this with the i5 on Black Friday for 699.95. The i7 was the same price as now at the time but had 3 year guarantee rather than the two currently on offer. Still a good deal. The laptop has a great screen and the speakers are impressive for a laptop so slim.

Keyboard is excellent, really nice to type on, has moulded keys rather than painted and the back lighting works well.
Real battery life can take me through a whole day of work easily (lots of chrome tabs, different office applications, usually always more than 5 programs open). I'd say if you're using it for leisure then the battery life should easily last close to the 9 hour estimate. Videos look good on this laptop and the clarity of the screen is awesome.
