Have bought three items from Richer Sounds, the staff were excellent and were able to answer all the questions that I asked. So perhaps some stores are better than others. Also the prices were good. I particularly liked the 6 year warranty - basically 10% of the purchase price. If the warranty is not used during the 6 year period, you get the cost of the warranty reimbursed if you apply for it and claim within 30 days. They even write to you and advise that the 6 year period is due to end.

Got them today Q300, swapped them over with my MA BX2 and just been playing some stereo music through them. They are warm, very warm, more than my BX2s which are already regarded as warm speakers. I have the bass turned up a little on my AVR I think I'll have to turn it down a bit to get the clarity up. I only have them at low volume because it's late but you can feel they have some real kick behind them.

They are beasts, very heavy even though they are similar size they weigh a fair bit more than the bronzes. Built like bricks, look very posh.

I have a bit of a Frankenstein's monster of a setup at the moment, including two front standing speakers from the LG HT752th system which I've had for years (https://www.reevoo.com/p/lg-ht752th)
How much of an improvement would these speakers give me, if any (these are the only 'proper' speakers I've had so go easy on me if this question is of biblical stupidity)

In my experience of buying AV gear, apart from the really high reference or limited kit.. It's terrible at holding value, mainly due to the sheer difficulty in shipping it.

AV Receivers are a nightmare to ship, so many horror stories on classified sites. You also don't often see people selling their 5.1 including delivery.

The only speakers I've ever had hold it's value and later resold was my KEF T205 set, mainly as it's quite a niche / desirable set for a style package and I was able to ship it.

Advantages is however, when you get a great set of speakers... You've got a great set of speakers... Isn't really something that moves on technologically.

The Kef Q range are the same price at Superfi too, I bought them from there because they still had them available for delivery.

I bought the Q300 too, looking at reviews it seems the Q100 are a little more 'accurate' and the Q300 are more bassy, of course as they are bigger. I went for extra bass as these are going in a small room with no sub.

Can't wait toll they arrive! I wonder how they will compare to my MA BX2s

27 Jan 17 #124
Trouble is speakers are such a personal choice. as someone has already pointed out an accurate analogy, it's like choosing between an Audi & a BMW, both quality cars but in the end it comes down to what you want?
What is wrong with the MA BX 2's to make you want to change? they're fab speakers!

For me the Q500's are a lot of speaker for £349, but just over-engineered for my needs... a 14' x 14' room. The Q100's 100w rating is more than enough! (I thought the Q500's were 500w rating but just discovered they are infact only 130w)
Nicolas
27 Jan 17 #123
Thanks I tried already but none of their london stores have all the speakers on demo some have the odd one but one needs to compare them
Everyone goes on about the q100 but the q500 for example of also half price and a lot of speaker for 349
I currently have the MA bx 2 I wish someone would be able to give an insight into all these speakers

Been using a Kef Kube2 sub for a few years. Sound was fine, but a component blew on a board a few months back. Kef wanted nearly £300 to replace it. Put simply, it was a complete rip off to one of their existing companies.

Those are all good brands making quality kit, it's not at the highest end though. I'm out of the loop these days, but I'm thinking Arcam and above.

Re displays, Richer don't discount massively on those.

I'm not being a snob, just explaining the way brands strive to retain their exclusivity. FWIW All my speakers are Kef, they've served me well.

So, by this argument, lets run through the brands RS sell, LG and Sony are both crud, despite the fact LG are the only company mass producing oled screens at the moment? (Sony use their panels).
And Denon, Yamaha and Sonos are for peasants too?

If you take that route, whatever you've bought holds some prestige and keeps its resale value.

High end audio is no different in that respect to any form of luxury goods. Designer handbags, perfumes, exotic cars, all these high end brands are very careful about who gets to sell their wares.

Imagine how quickly the Omega brand would be toast if you could pick up Seamasters in TK Maxx for £300.

I went to the Prestwich store to buy these and matching centre speaker which they got in especially for me. I left with the Dali Zennor 1's and Vokal after a long chat with the staff. We agreed they would be too big for the my small room.

No one can tell you which will sound better in your own room/set up but I don't think anyone would tell you it was a huge mistake whichever you choose. It's not like choosing between a Skoda and a Ferrari...more like between a BMW and a Audi if that helps! Both brands have been very well respected for many years amongst hifi/av enthusiasts.

26 Jan 17 #89
It is true. I've friends who are design engineers for high end audiophile manufacturers, and say their brands keep a tight rein on distribution channels to maintain their place in the market.

The margins on AV are large, but the independent dealers provide a service and move stock slowly. They can't survive if the 'pile em high and sell em cheap' brigade load up with the same products and discount heavily.

Anyhow... Kef are a good brand, these give good value for money at this price. Voting hot.

Torres I've got a 5.1 Dali setup, Zensor 1 and Zensor Pico centre up front and Zensor Pico rears. Really pleased with them, sound stage and clarity of vocals is impressive from such a small set up. I used to have BW 685s and these are on par if not better. Bass is pretty good to from them, recommend placing them close to wall if you've not got a sub. Also had Q Acoustics 2020i but the Dali are much better than those. Pop into your local Richer Sounds for a demo.

I buy 99% of my electronic equipment from Richersounds. Have done so for over 20 years now. Very good shop. They will always beat prices and I have done so on many occasions. Their payment desk has access to the internet and they can instantly bring up any retail site you suggest. They won't do this at Tesco or other stores to match or beat prices. They also always have 3-4 people in shop to advise you. You try searching for someone with IT knowledge in Tesco?

Richersounds have been round for over 38+ years now. Pretty sure they will price match at £195 with that other retailer. Assuming they have stock left.

I love that I escape the cult of hi-fi and lament the lost years reading hi-fi magazine and poring over reviews. These speakers are clearly great, you would never need anything better. The front firing port is such a good idea so they can be pushed up against the wall or bookshelf.

I'm certain there is collusion between the hi-fi reviewers and the product's. The idea is there something in your sound that you don't like, you buy a new very expensive upgrade. Scorn is poured on graphic equaliser is, yet every live concert audio will go through a massive array of graphic equaliser and sound processes yet no one complains there. I would urge people to be happy with what they've got and tweak their tone controls.

Yeah the problem is, my rooms quite small and I'm in a corner so it's somewhat like a curved computer desk so from what I've read online I might not benefit from a 5.1 due to being so close to the screen so would I be better suited to these speakers?

If that's all you want them for, a 5.1 surround would suit you better. These are more suited to listening to music in stereo.

Don't get me wrong, they'll still sound fantastic. But you'd get more enjoyment from a 5.1 system for movies and games.

I've also found RS staff to be very knowledgeable about what they sell. They let me audition 2 sets of speakers at home before I settled on the one I liked, which happened to be the 3rd set. I've had a discussion around the various HDCP standards (e.g. what led to HDCP 2.1 being cracked) and what's on the horizon for 4K TVs etc, and again the staff at the Watford branch were very knowledgeable

I certainly wouldn't say the same thing about Curry's staff, one of whom tried to convince me many years ago that 'LED' was a whole new display technology compared to 'LCD'. When I tried to suggest that the difference was only the backlight, he looked at me as if I was really thick. As Mark Twain once said, ''Never argue with a Currys salesman. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience''.

Depends. Listened to both and the Q300s have a bit more bass as the other person said but the Q100s don't lack in that area at all (it is a strength actually) The most important factor for me is that even the Q100s aren't small..the Q300s were too large for where I wanted to put these speakers...I would class them more as stand then bookshelf speakers

http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/bookshelf-speakers/kef/q100-black-oak/prd_498388_4290crx.aspx

It sounds like they offer decent bass and nice flat sound in for a compact speaker in the price range. So if you are after a compact speaker for £150-£400 then give them a listen with your kit

As to this being the end of HiFi or whatever Robert_Paulson is getting at, I am presuming that he knows that Kef have used Richer Sounds (and others) to sell their old model speakers for about half price for many years now. I remember auditioning a half price pair of KEF Q30's back when I bought a 2nd hand pair of B&W DM620's 22 years ago, Kef still seem to be releasing respected high end stuff so this must be an awfully slow muddying of their reputation. This is a 2011 model, they clearly want to clear some stock, it has been discounted, standard business practice for most manufacturers.

*coughs* anyone actually got an opinion on these speakers and the price on offer please? Not bothered about brand or store snobbery politics.

What utter snobbery to say that an item's quality has been lowered because it's being sold by a particular retailer or at a particular price! These people are on the wrong website! So all the bargains on HUKD are all rubbish because their price is low or because they come from a "mass" - but highly reputable and excellent customer service - retailer.? Jog-on back to your high-brow rip-off specialist - and leave this site for those of us HUKDers who appreciate quality and service at a bargain price. Good find OP, and thank you

Mmm either Robert Paulson owns a hifi shop close to a richer sounds or he's just bought these speakers at full price :stuck_out_tongue:

Have used Richer Sounds for a good number of years without problem. Purchased tv 2yr later developed a fault and was replaced by a more up to date model and new 6yr guarantee. Soundbar was the same on different ocasional and again was replaced by a far superior one. Both items were uplifted and replaced no questions asked.

These speakers seem a good deal which is what this site is about.

What a toxic thread!

Good speakers. Good price.

What KEF might be doing is trying to smash the lower end of the market to then bring out a mid-range speaker that has the perception of brilliance.
PS - I have no idea what I'm talking about but I sure as heck am going to grab a pair of these :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you're missing the point basically these speakers say last week were £400 and they sound amazing, now these speakers are suddenly rubbish speakers because they are now half the price. The guy who bought it for 400 is crying that he has the same speakers as jimmy no ears who got it for 200 and used some bell wire connected to his am radio. Some audiophiles want that non mass market premium brand that maintains its premium overpriced status because they use baby lambs to clean the contacts on banana plug sockets.

Its like what happened to Bose

Richer has always had KEF speakers back to them days at London Bridge, though not the latest models which this one is not.
BagABargain78
25 Jan 17 1 #10
They're not selling out. All brands do it to get rid of surplus stock, make way for newer models, sell off outdated tech. Doesn't mean they're selling out. It's just part of maximising their profits.

And you don't think the manufacturer is on board with that? Who do you think is supplying these items to richer sounds? Who do you think authorised the discount? The manufacturer perhaps??

On a none richer sounds note. I've got some of these and they are great! The MX1s I had didn't sound right with my pioneer amp but were great with Denon DM39. These KEF come with inserts for so you can alter Bass. I left mine out because that's what was missing when changed my amp and they sound superb...I've got the white version and they look mint with no cover. I tried a fair few speakers when got MX1s and these destroyed all the £150-300 speakers I'd tried as they are really a £500 design not just a name.

TBH that's my experience of most hifi stores who will try to sell you whatever they get most commission on rather than letting you listen and decide for yourself.
Last time I set foot in one they tried to persuade me I should trade in my Linn system for something by Pioneer or Sony.
Whereas when I wanted a DVD player Richer sounds just let me buy a few options on my credit card so I could try them at home n return the ones I didn't want for a refund.

The only potential deal here is the 6 year warranty rather than 5 year warranty of same kit at same price via likes of SuperFi and PeterTyson.
