I've got 22 GU10s covering my downstairs. 8 of them (when I pick up my 4 from Argos) are going to be Hue which are the central bulbs on one 2 gang manual switch in the living room.
The other 14 are split over 3 LightwaveRF switches which cost me:
Wifi Link - £52 from eBay
LED bulbs compatible with LRF £75ish
Switches - £40 x 3 = £120
But then I saw some mood switches on eBay for £13 delivered and bought 2 of those (they are awesome) = £26
Total = £273
If I wanted another 10 bulbs on LRF like thefair1973 - then it'd probably push it up to £380ish anyway!
There are pro's that I found LRF had over Hue for me which is why I went for LRF mainly - the fact that you can switch them back on with the app if someone turns them off with the switch was the main one for me!! Also, the mood controllers or even the mood remotes you can get are pretty awesome and save you from having to either talk to Alexa or pulling up the app. i.e. when it's time for bed for the kids, I hit preset 1 in the living room and all the lights in the house go off with a dimmed light in the landing and hallway.
The cons are that the community/help is very scarce and the LRF products don't report whether they are already on or not which can be an annoyance as you never truly know whether you turned the light on or off when you are away. I have already had one occasions when we ended up staying out late so I turned the lights on via the app and came home to a dark house. Also, it's very hard to find good deals for the stuff or even on some occasions, stores that stock the stuff! Oh and if you need different colours, forget LightwaveRF. I tried the coloured philips hue bulbs and returned them as I didn't see any reason for me ever needing to change the colour.

Managed to get the starter set and two individual lights, although seemed like it was the last ones in London. Took three days, four different Argos stores and at least nine members of Argos staff.
First store after reserving the item told me they didn't actually have it when I turned up!
When I found places with actual stock in they argued each time at the till when the deal didn't work immediately. I confirmed I'd spoken to Customer Services and confirmed the code was valid on these. Eventually I got the deal, but each time took 10-15 minutes and at least three members of staff repeatedly entering the code and going 'computer says no.'
Great bargain, but damn I remember why I don't shop at Argos much.

Heads up for anyone still looking to order. Tried collecting in store at the weekend was told its not part of home25 deal even after showing them the code on the lighting page. Tried again this evening (3xb22s) using fast track payment and it took the code this time. Also if none in stock order to your local argos, don't collect them, then 2-3 days later reserve using the faster payment option when they are in stock. Get looking people and good luck. Argos need to sort it out!

had success at merthyr tydfil on Saturday despite the till lady saying no and refusing to contact her manager. she said that someone had come in the day before and the company line was that as the bulbs were electrical goods code could not be used. she also said that the person who came in the day before referred to a chat log. i demanded to see the manager and after showing her the chat log she overrode the system and i got my discount. so code will work if you persist

Got the starter kit for £40 thanks to a £5 voucher argos had also emailed me!!!
On the Argos website theirs a light strip extension kit for less than £30 and another light strip set for about £60.

Due to a few things but mainly due to the store I had selected closing at 5:30 and it being out of my way I did not manage to get there.
My guess is that the offer code will not work tomorrow so i have probably missed the boat now and saved myself £112 + no doubt all the add ons I would get like dimmer and more bulbs etc.

Typically you could use these in table or floor lamps. The typical ceiling rose in the UK tends to be the other type of lamp fitting, the BC or Bayonet Cap. You could purchase an adaptor from Ikea that converts the ES to BC fitting, if that helps. Here!

Looks like the Home25 code works on the Hive lighting kit as well. Stock seems ok near me, so might be an option for some. How does the Hive compare to Hue? Might be cheaper if you already have Hive for heating in your home, as you won't need to buy a hub?
I'm assuming one of your 2 gangs was a master? If not then two slaves don't work together. I put a 1 way 2 gang downstairs to control landing and hallway light and then upstairs I replaced the switch with a wireless 2 gang which connects to the 1 way 2 gang with no wiring. But I only did that because I looked at the wiring upstairs and saw a mess from previous owners so just made the cables safe and screwed the wirefree one onto the back box.
Even the lights they claim are not compatible work for me - they just flicker when you dim them or don't dim more than half way etc.
Edit. I have the 400 series switches btw. The 200 series were known to have issues with LED.

24 Jan 17#126
Thanks for that. I went with LightwaveRF when I renovated my last place, about three years ago, but seemed that the tech wasn't mature enough back then. Wasted about 120.00 on a set of 'paired' two gang, two way switches for the hallway / landing, which having fitted, we could never get to work. Back then there wasn't a list of 'compatible lights' so I'd gone with Aurora branded LED's for the rest of the house, which turned out would never work with the LightWaveRF tech. This was having spent hours with my own electricians, and even their own guys who visited and examined our wiring etc. Was a real shame as the tech was really promising. I see that there is a now a recommended list of LED lamps, hence my question as to what you're using. I'm assuming you managed to get these working properly?

Ah, glad I'm not the only one. I thought the cashier was pressing the wrong buttons on the till. Same problem, watched as they tried to apply the home25 code to the E27 starter kit, and error'd each time. In the end, the manager suggested she would cancel my reserve and collect order and I place a fast track purchase on my mobile, applying the code there, as it would be quicker than her having to key through a manual discount, which went through fine.
Not sure when you get the 10.00 off voucher though, anybody have any idea's?

Colouring your life... the benefits of colour, light and mood are well documented - ideally you would paint a ceiling matt white & all the walls magnolia matt (white is too clinical and any sheen may over reflect, use professional ultra matt opacity) in a room and add Hue striplights below the wall/ceiling joints with cheap baton and a dado rail - a wider bottomed dado rail can be turned upside down and nailed to the baton on the wall - this hides the striplight from view and your wallpaper has 16 million colours.
I installed the first light system ever for someone years ago up the top of the walls as described, the major work was cutting the wood, and painting them matt magnolia as the walls when up, a cheap No More Nails was used to stick the batons to the wall - the prep of a spirit level, and adjusting line of sight was a pain but easy. When it is up add the Hue striplights.
All in with trade discount it was circa £650 (much cheaper now) for a average lounge.
You can repeat the above by adding it to above the skirting rail with baton/dado rail the right way up for more effect, for some this would be overkill, and you need a hand vacuum as it will become a dust trap.
Having bought a Ambilight TV late last year I am planning to paint my lounge & Hue it this year, Argos starter pack has just made me ensure it is done sooner than later
Striplights next, anyone on a budget can do the woodwork one month, buy a striplight starter next month & add 1m extension lengths as cash permits.
Prepare for friend envy tho

WessexUnderwater
24 Jan 171#106
No, these don't work with dimmer switches and it will break them over time if you try. They are self dimming.
I use Lightwave and am dabbling with these. I You need a fair bit more than Lightwave to dim these. You need a hue bridge and something to control it with
1) A smartphone running the Hue app
2) Amazon Echo
3) one of these dimmers http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/8718696506943/hue-dimmer-switch
I'm finding it makes more sense to use Lightwave for bulk lighting and a few colour hue bulbs in standard lamps to add atmosphere.

Seems like you know the pros and cons of both systems. I have installed 7 white ambience bulbs and 2 standard white hue bulbs. I am generally happy with my set up, although like most I still need to buy/feel the need to buy more remotes or get Alexa on the case.
My main frustrations have been:
* rooms being manually switched off on occasions (but this is livable for me).
* inability to control all lights, e.g. in bathrooms where I'd have to change the fittings.
* the cost of the gu10s preventing me rolling it out to an office and my exterior lights which together require 17 gu10s! The exterior lights annoy me as, due to an entrance being changed to a window I now have to walk through several rooms to get to the switch. I'd love a wifi switch like the Lightwave RF but I know hardly anything about them. You also mention having to get compatible bulbs which make me think that Hue may still be the easiest option. Any advice??

The bulbs slight dome to tip of converter 143mm
" " " " to start of converter 78mm
" " " " to bottom of white plastic part 114mm
" " " " to first screw thread under white plastic part 123mm
That's measured flat down the side of the bulb and converter btw. So they would be ever so slightly less if they were measured parallel to the bulb and converter. If you get my drift!

I was looking at the dimmer switch late last night before this deal came up and it was in stock in all stores within a 20mile radius(18 stores) but by the time I saw this deal at 11am every single one was out of stock. Either dimmer switches are really popular on here or Argos don't like to include them in this deal.

I assume you want to use hue E27 bulbs in an E14 fitting - I ordered these -
Not the highest quality but have been doing the job for a bit no problems. Bottom contact may need tweaking up to make sure its in proper contact with the tip of the bulb going by some of the reviews. I didn't have that issue with any of mine.
Edit - They were 81p each when I ordered mine

No scene control via Alexa using the standard hue app on a V1 hub. You need to delve into using 3rd party apps like Yonomi to get Hue scenes and Alexa talking to each other.

As spruceyb has said you can do all sorts of things with them but the best thing i did was to link them to the Amazon echo dot, now i just walk in and say 'alexa turn the lights on' and i have the light i want at the levels i want, and i dont even have to use a switch
Rossmor40
23 Jan 17#66
The IFTTT integration is excellent especially turning the lights blue when it starts raining and switching the light on and off when you come home or leave.
spruceyb
23 Jan 17#65
You can still just use the light switch.
But also Geofencing so lights come on when you get home or go off when you leave home.
You can also use IFTTT to do hundreds of things. Like, set a colour bulb to change to a certain colour if it's a certain temperature outside. Or flash a light if you get an email from a specific address, see https://ifttt.com/hue for various others.
With the colour or variable warmth bulbs you can have a really cool white which helps concentration or a better light for reading, or you can make it warm white to relax.
Cool effects with apps like flickering candle, lava lamp, change in time with music.
You can also set routines, so I have them in my landing for example, I have them fade to full around 6:30pm (they're already on at sunset from an IFTTT recipe i use), then at 9pm they dim to around 60% then dim some more until they are on nightlight from Midnight till 6am when they fade back up.

Total = £273

Looks like the deal is back on?
First store after reserving the item told me they didn't actually have it when I turned up!
When I found places with actual stock in they argued each time at the till when the deal didn't work immediately. I confirmed I'd spoken to Customer Services and confirmed the code was valid on these. Eventually I got the deal, but each time took 10-15 minutes and at least three members of staff repeatedly entering the code and going 'computer says no.'
Great bargain, but damn I remember why I don't shop at Argos much.
Argos needs this sorting.
I picked up a reservation made today and quoted code at till, manager overrode it without chat transcript.
Picking up some more bulbs tomorrow so will take reciept showing 25% off for evidence if new store argues about it.
Thanks OP
Got the starter kit for £40 thanks to a £5 voucher argos had also emailed me!!!
On the Argos website theirs a light strip extension kit for less than £30 and another light strip set for about £60.
Am I right in assuming the cheaper one will not work by itself? (I just wanted to trial it out and put 1m ish strip near the TV). Sorry new to all this!! Not sure whether I can justify spending so much on the light strips as well!!
Should i have received a £5 gift card or would it have to be over £50 even after discount is applied?
They even called the number she had supplied but they were not impressed with that as it was the standard reserve number or something.
They eventually override the price and issue me with the £10 gift voucher also.
Shame this has been expired for a while as technically it's still valid
Can't say fairer than that so I will pick them up later.
If I paid by fast track should I still be able to collect without any issues, as the code has now expired?
Wasn't able to go today but will be going tomorrow afternoon.
My guess is that the offer code will not work tomorrow so i have probably missed the boat now and saved myself £112 + no doubt all the add ons I would get like dimmer and more bulbs etc.
I hadn't convinced the wife anyway as we typically just have 1 lamp in the corner of the lounge and she wasn't keen on making the 2 ceiling lights different colours etc which I was.
Thank goodness for that, saved me from myself!!!
Keep us updated if it works in-store. Thanks

I use Lightwave and am dabbling with these. I You need a fair bit more than Lightwave to dim these. You need a hue bridge and something to control it with
1) A smartphone running the Hue app
2) Amazon Echo
3) one of these dimmers http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/8718696506943/hue-dimmer-switch
I'm finding it makes more sense to use Lightwave for bulk lighting and a few colour hue bulbs in standard lamps to add atmosphere.
This might help :wink:http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/argos-error-store-only-morphy-richards-stand-mixer-18-99-2605321
PS
Anybody here know if you can set it up to turn on multiple rooms say for instance you need the loo in the middle of the night you can just say Bathroom or something and have it turn on the lights in the room between you and it on low.
Thanks
Will go great with the Hue Go lamp deal I got off here last week for £46.99.
Can't wait to set up some sweet IFTTT recipes with my other smart home devices i.e. Echo dot; ring video doorbell; Netatmo welcome home camera & security tags.
If anyone has any cool recipes please share
" " " " to start of converter 78mm
" " " " to bottom of white plastic part 114mm
" " " " to first screw thread under white plastic part 123mm
That's measured flat down the side of the bulb and converter btw. So they would be ever so slightly less if they were measured parallel to the bulb and converter. If you get my drift!
That was a really great deal. If you didn't need the bridge you could sell it.. two ambience bulbs and dimmer for £20 ish
I've just found another E14 lamp I could put a bulb in but the fitting is at an awkward angle. Assuming you have colour bulbs, would you mind measuring the overall length of converter and bulb?
Get a Argoscard lol less than £20 a month 0% for 6 months on the two top kits at £112.49 with the 25% off
Is showing £49.99 on front page but when selecting the item its OOS.
Also what are Argos like with returns on items like this ?

Not the highest quality but have been doing the job for a bit no problems. Bottom contact may need tweaking up to make sure its in proper contact with the tip of the bulb going by some of the reviews. I didn't have that issue with any of mine.
Edit - They were 81p each when I ordered mine
You need to setup the bulb placement on the TV.
Dimmer not in stock anywhere near me and the motion sensor is more expensive than anywhere else so that ends up not being a great deal.
The starter kits are a good deal though with the 25% off, nice!
I have a old Xperia SP with Philips remote app as it's just easier than remote & onscreen
£59.99 for less than £45 - it might be only white lights but the Hue bridge included is about £50 at the cheapest elsewhere, so a great start to Hue you can add colour bulbs to if wanted. It is E27 bulbs but what's a couple of cheap lamps ?

Did you get a £10 voucher?
So makes sense to order 1, get £10 voucher, then use that for a second order?
The other 14 are split over 3 LightwaveRF switches which cost me:
Wifi Link - £52 from eBay
LED bulbs compatible with LRF £75ish
Switches - £40 x 3 = £120
But then I saw some mood switches on eBay for £13 delivered and bought 2 of those (they are awesome) = £26
Total = £273
Just picked up a bayonet starter kit and they are richer colours.
I've got the 43PUS6401, don't need the app, it's setup on the TV.
Ambilight TV party at mine some time after 4pm collection folks, bring your favourite music blurays
£112.49 starter set with 6 months 0% free on Argoscard
HEAT OP...and a kiss cos I'm a gentleman who appreciates good deeds!
Edit:PS) Prep done, stole two lamps from other rooms and downloaded Philips Ambilight+Hue app on my iPhone YES! Who says a man can't organise ladies!!!:laughing::laughing:
Thanks OP

The good old mythical wardens of the Argos treasure, always around to help..... X)
.. at least I can not see it in millions of colours
Now I can turn on the Hue Manic app and my little girls will love the full disco effect
Also it says you get £10 voucher for spending over £100.
The reviews suggest they are 3rd gen.... will update anyway once i've picked them up.
Had to C&C from 2 different branches miles apart though.
Was waiting for a deal on the twin packs from anywhere, but didn't expect 25%!!!!! Wooooohooo! Thought maybe 2 twin packs for £80 (£20 a lamp!) but under £17 a lamp is (insane, I know) a "GREAT DEAL"!
Thanks OP!
Are there any major differences between the v1 and v2?
So tempted but I've just forked out hundreds on LightwaveRF products so that I wouldn't get the issue of someone turning the lights off at the switch and making the hue bulbs totally pointless.
Might still pick up a couple of B22s... anyone know if Hue bulbs work with LightwaveRF dimmers?
Are there any major differences between the v1 and v2?

But have some heat OP got another 2 bulbs for £22 so thats my flat sorted..........
